Multiplayer NASCAR sounds neat, NOT!

Just as expected, Sierra/Papyrus needs another way to make a buck or two. Instead of releasing a patch that makes the game playable over the internet via Kali (http://www.kali.net they instead choose to charge their players per-minute or per-hour to use the Sierra network or some branch of it to race. I guess its a marketing thing, do you charge yer current users of the game to use it over internet at a per-minute/hour rate or do you encourage non-Nascar owners to go buy the game from stores because its playable over the internet with unlimited time. Apparently the former method makes more money off current owners of the game. BTW, I havent purchased any of Papyrus's racing games yet and from the looks of it, probably never will.

Sorry you don't own Nascar Racing. Not only is it a great stand alone game, but over the Multi Network it rocks. (IMHO)As far as i know it would take more then a game patch to get a latency that would work as well as the network. Thanks for all the hard work Papy, And a special thanks to all the beta tester that got this network up and running like butter! Turning left, Jim G. JimGlot On-Line

Oh, you must be waiting for GP2 huh? Have fun. Btw, I'm sure that whatever method of charging for the service was probably defined well before the buyout. Did you think they were gonna create such a service just cause we're a bunch of nice guys? Get real. _______________________________________ Tim Wortman NASSCAR '96 Series Director Visit the NASSCAR '96 home page http://www.webcom.com/twortman/nasscar/ _______________________________________

Ummmm....first, of all since you haven't bought any of the games then why would you care? I don't go slamming any of Talon Softs software just because I don't own them. Second...Haven't you ever heard of latency. A racing sim needs a LOT better send and recieve times than anyother game out there on this market. You can't be going next to a guy at 200 mph and have him bounce around the track. It just doesn't work. Sure with Descent, or a Flight Sim, the latnecy requirement is not as stringent. If someone warps, you just reaquire the target and continue. In a racing sim, if the thing warps...you're game is over! I'm not going to waste further time on this post... your're OBVIOUSLY just looking to get flamed, and I'm sure there are others who would gladly do it for me. P.S. Papyrus has been working on this network a LOT longer than the time it took them to get acquired by Sierra, and if you'd looked at the other posts, instead of just firing off a shot across the bow-so to speak, you would of noticed this is Open Beta testing...Beta...you know trying to work the bugs out...They are not charging a cent to use it, and therefore are not making any cash. A smart move because it gets tested by dedicated racers (well most of em <G>). Plus I assume it will hopefully *** a lot of people. But it is also a dangerous move, because if people don't like it they won't come back when it is paying. They could be locking out a lot of their market before it even gets started. Maybe next time you'll think a few seconds before you fire off about something that I think you don't have any clue about. just my $0.02 -- http://www.dithots.org/~bms/index.htm Closed Beta Tester Hawaii Network - bsimpson online "It's Always Darkest before it goes totally Black"

Listen here Knucklehead..... Yeah I WANT Papyrus to make ALOT of bucks! And as long as this new service is halfway reasonable, I'll give them my money. For turnover is what creates Progression in development and support! And as far as KALI? Yeah nice concept, and for Very VALID reasons it's been put to all of us here the reasons WHY it wont work that way. Kali has it's problems too anyhow. Unlimited access on the Internet? Ohhh so noone here pay's an ISP each month for access to the Internet?? Nothings free pal. And judging from the number of people calling to try this thing out, posting positive messages about it. Have people with your opinion outnumbered dramatically! Walk into your software store and COUNT the number of copies of Driving Sim software on the shelves! The store I frequent quite a bit is STILL selling copies of NASCAR like Crazy! I guess it all boils down to what your into, None of us really wanted to see this thing go thru with Papyrus and Sierra I've ***ed about that alot more than Most in this very Newsgroup. But as long as PAPYRUS continues to grow and produce BY FAR the most accurate racing simulators made I'll buy and support them. As will Many others! And I wish those guys all the best! You sound like either a "need for speed" gamer or seriously misinformed. It's a shame. Go play doom..... Take Care :) Andy A
Just because someone happens to dislike NASCAR, is that any reason to take a swipe at GP2? Coming from a series director it's a pretty unusual stance. NASCAR is a great game, but GP2 will undoubtedly be sensational and we WILL have fun! Cheers! Hmmm, you do know the throughput and latency rates of a LAN compared to a 28.8 modem don't you? NASCAR is EASILY capable of being played over a LAN, and if people want to take that further and try over the internet, why not? Personally I think LAN play under IPX is a must - it can't replace a dial-up service like Hawaii, how could you get 32 computers and people into one house!? - but it's a fabulous feature which is sadly missing at the moment. Cheers! Bummer .. we'll miss you up there BTW ... there is no additional charges for the network above the cost of the software during beta.

To my mind, Hawaii is another product and Papryus is justified in charging for it. I'm sick of people saying, "Why doesn't Papyrus just release a patch?" Granted, if a product fails to perform, then a patch should be released. But Hawaii is an extension of the game. Users are not _forced_ into dailing the network. Purchasers of the game have NASCAR Racing and can enjoy it as a complete and entertaining package. I'm usually the first to criticize the ill effects of capitalism and I hate marketing. However, Nascar Racing is an independent product in my mind. Hawaii is another thing completely. The latter does require the former, but again there is no coercion. I don't understand why you are upset. Why would Papyrus spend a year or so developing Hawaii and then give it away free? As an incentive to purchase Nascar Racing? I agree that it might entice _some_ people. But, a year or so worth of development resources is pretty expensive marketing. (Especially when one considers the small size of Papyrus.) Nascar Racing is a fifty dollar package and is roughly 1.5 years old. You seem to think that $50 buys perpetual support and rights to anything that Papyrus develops that is connected with Nascar Racing. I'm sorry, but you are misguided as to market realities. I have been using Nascar Racing since it was first realeased. Sure, problems exist...but, I wish every $50 I spend would give me the same return that Nascar has. Furthermore, your post implies that you have no idea how Hawaii is accessed. If you had read the posts by Ed Martin/Rick Genter, you would learn the latency of the internet is too great to play the game effectively, or at all. Mike. P.S. Although I would love to use Hawaii, I cannot. I simply do not have the money. Of course, I would welcome free access, but I realize the amount of development work and risk that Papyrus has assumed in developing the Hawaii Multiplayer Service. They have every right to charge for using it.

Mr. Wallace( :-) ), isn't it disheartening to be confronted with sorry souls that are biased for all the wrong reasons? It doesn't amaze me, though, as bigotry is the biggest factor in the greatest equation of them all, namely War. One thinks bigotry is in the genes but it is not. It is the product of the anti-urge to ponder the very nature of oneself. Seinfeld would have termed the phenomen as "anti-u". Anyone who has seen pictures of GP2 and read about it and has some mileage in the *** world knows instantly that GP2 will be something special. -- --- Terje Wold Johansen --- http://www.ifi.uio.no/~terjjo/ --- "I am your inferior superior."
