Init String for 14.4 Sportster & Hawaii?

12 posts by 10 people · 25 Apr 1996 - 01 May 1996

Hi. I was trying to enter races on Hawaii earlier tonight but was having no success at all. Logging on to the Hawaii server was not a problem, but entering races sure was. I keep receiving "User Abort" messages after about 5-10 seconds. I have a USR Sportster 14.4 modem and my init string is: AT&F1&K0 I have my baud setting at 19200. What I'd like to know is if there are any other USR Hawaii users who have had success participating in races and, if so, what your init string is. Thanks, Bill.

How can you have your baud rate set HIGHER than the speed of your modem?!? I thought a 14.4k was 14,400 - not 19200... Eldred Pickett I am NOT paranoid. And why are you always watching me?!?

Hey all... I have a USR 28.8 and I have raced only once - at Talladega for 9 laps and it worked great. I'm using an init string of just: at&f1 I had the baud rate set to 38400. I stayed connected just fine and the racing was smooth and perfect. Other than the guy in front of me waited about 4 or 5 seconds before noticing the green flag, it went great. Most USR modems should function pretty good with just the &f1. Hope this helps. Aaron

Your modem will connect at whatever Baud rate its rated for. The 'higher' speed election (i.e. 19,200) is used to tell your CPU at what speed it may talk to your modem, irregardless of ITS connection speed. Isn't that right? Simon.

Eldred, 14.4 is the connect rate, 19200 is the speed with compression, just like 28.8 can get up to 38400 and rarely 115200. l8r Happy Racing! Todd

You should try connecting at 9600 baud instead of 19200. If you are still having trouble, you can contact Hawaii Tech Support Good luck Mike
> How can you have your baud rate set HIGHER than the speed of your modem?!? I > thought a 14.4k was 14,400 - not 19200... > Eldred Pickett The baud rate you set is the rate at which your computer communicates with your modem. If you have a high speed serial port, your computer should be able to "talk" to your modem at around 57,600 baud. Your modem will ordinarily auto-negotiate to the fastest baud rate both it and the server can support. The rate modems are rated at are the max baud rates they can support when talking to another server/modem. Hopes this explanation is somewhat clear.

Try adding &B1 to the init string. This fixed multiplayer problems for 2 = player races with a friend, and was mentioned as something you needed to = do by Papyrus in the writeup for Hawaii (turning off variable port = rates).

These are two different rates....14.4 is the connection speed (speed between modems), while 19.2 is the DTE rate (which I believe is the rate at which the modem talks to the software) ========================================================= ==Jim McGuigan Power Switching & Conversion Systems== ==Hanover, PA Baltimore / Washington Field Service== == == ** Especially for the guy who found this offending: ** =============God, Country, Notre Dame====================

I reset it to 14400, and it worked fine. Where's the weak link here, modem(hayes) or software? _ Jimi Hendrix' modem was a purple Hayes... Eldred Pickett I am NOT paranoid. Similarly if I set my DTE at 38.4 and connect at 19.2 (using a USR 28.8) I get garbage. Back the DTE down to 19.2 and it works fine. ========================================================= ==Jim McGuigan Power Switching & Conversion Systems== ==Hanover, PA Baltimore / Washington Field Service== == == ** Hawaii Driver: Knuckle Duster ** *********************************************************
