In the NASCAR Racing manual (talladega tutorial section) it says that (paraphrasing)
"those orange balls at the beginning and end of each corner have nascar officials in
them". I have studied my tapes of nascar races and do not believe nascar officials have
anything to do with them. Anyone know anything on this matter?

Well, those "Orange Balls" if you didn't know this,
is the Logo for "Unocal" the Fuel Sponsor of NASCAR
the proper # that is on the ball is "76" I guess there
was a copyright conflict there to. I do know that on a
a few real tracks these would be big enuff to hold a man
or two. But I can't personally atest to ever seeing this during
a actual NASCAR race whether it be Live or Televised.

It is true. I know one of the guys that works as a NASCAR
spotter at the 'Dega race in the ball.

I think what the manual should have said (it is unclear) is that a NASCAR
official is usually standing on a platform on the sign.

Nope, the manual was right. If you look real close this weekend at
Talladega, you'll notice that the Unocal 76 ball at the exit of turn 4
(right at the end of the main grandstand) has 3 or 4 windows in it.
NASCAR spotters sit in those balls to spot debris on the track and other
trouble. They are located in other positions as well.
