TGS 2004: Gran Turismo 4 Goes Offline
No online, new B-Spec mode. Due out in December.
September 24, 2004 - At a Tokyo Game Show press event today, Sony Computer
Entertainment announced a Japanese release date for Gran Turismo 4. The
title will indeed arrive this year, with a release date planned for December
3. American and European releases will also take place in early December
with America getting a tentative date of December 14.
To make this date, SCE announced that the game would be missing its heavily
touted online mode of play. The company plans on releasing a separate
Online-compatible version of the game in the future.
SCE confirmed some final details on what we can expect from the game. A
total of over 650 cars will be available in the title, far more than the
Gran Turismo 3 count. Commenting on the number of cars, series producer
Kasunori Yamauchi said "The world of cars may appear incredibly large, but
it's actually a collection of small worlds. In order to cover the interests
of all users, we deemed it necessary to include this many cars."
Yamauchi also confirmed that over fifty courses would make it into the game.
These can be played in normal and reverse, making for over 100 varieties.
The courses will include most of the courses that have appeared in the
series so far along with new ones. The inclusion of so many courses is
apparently part of one of the game's concepts of taking players on a journey
through the world.
Also revealed at the press event was the game's new B-Spec mode of play.
This mode focuses on the simulation side of the Gran Turismo series. Players
customize their cars and send them out to the raceway for a hands-off race.
The game automatically controls the car on the track, allowing the player to
view the race in replay form. Players can interrupt the game with breaking
and acceleration instructions if they see fit.

Sony drops online from Gran Turismo 4
by GamesIndustry.biz
Polyphony Digital's long-awaited PS2 racing title Gran Turismo 4 is on track
to meet worldwide release dates in early December - but at the cost of
online play, which has been removed from the game.
At a press conference at the Tokyo Game Show today, Sony representatives
confirmed that the game will launch in Japan on December 3rd, followed by a
launch in the USA and Europe around December 14th (which probably means
Friday December 17th in Europe).
However, the title will now be an offline game only, in a surprising move
for the company - which had previously vaunted online play as being one of
the key selling points for the new game.
The plan is now to launch Gran Turismo 4 with offline play this year, while
a new Gran Turismo game with online play is provisionally scheduled for 2005
at some point. We don't know much about the new title as yet, although we'd
speculate that it might be a budget-priced release, similar to the post-GT3
Gran Turismo Concept.
Strong rumours from within Sony and Polyphony Digital had suggested that
online problems were the primary cause of the delay to Gran Turismo 4, with
the team encountering serious difficulty in getting the online racing modes
up to scratch.
It seems likely that Sony took a decision to simply drop that functionality
entirely from the game in order to ensure that it hit its Christmas release
date.
Flame warGran Turismo 4 to ship without online play
A cross-posted IGN report said Sony had announced at the Tokyo Game Show that Gran Turismo 4 would launch without online play, with a new B-Spec mode and a December Japanese release. Reactions ranged from shock to indifference, and the thread degenerated into an insult-filled argument between console posters over the value of online gaming, with some notes on LAN play over FireWire.
Automated summary.
Just saw this. Shocking...at least for console racers. If MS can just get
a decent wheel, Forza could own the video driving-game market (GT1, 1, & 3
have sold 30 *million* copies...worth 1.5 *billion* buckaroos).

On the bright side an online only game may be the better option in the
long run, i.e. it will be more devoted to online play rather than GT4
having it 'bolted on'.

How's my posting?
Hows that work, sony make more money out of you of an online version, that's
just stupid if Microsoft done that everyone would be well pissed off and
especially with a delay, well if Microsoft can get forza out im sure that
would sell a few xboxs as long as its actually good!

50 million PC gamers and 3.5+ million console players playing online isn't
enough people to warrant online gaming has arrived!

This could be quite a canny move, plenty of people like me have no online
access, and for those desperate for GT4 they'll cheerfully buy whatever comes
out, or maybe even get someone else to get it for them as a Christmas present.
Those who wanted online play will then trade in their offline GT4 for the online
version in the spring having had a few months to practice the tracks and cars
rather than turn up online as green as a learner driver.
Pisses me off though, as my local telephone exchange is finally going to be
broadband enabled in December, so it would have been perfect timing for me to
have started online gaming with the only game I've ever been interested in
playing online.
Couple that with all the interviews Kazunori Yamauchi did after the launch of
GT3 where he claimed GT4 would be primarily desgined as an online game with
single player aspects being secondary and it looks like a rather cynical and
greedy move to sell people 2 copies of the same game. It'll probably work too.

For me online gaming is perfect because I "mostly" play with real life
friends.
I rarely play with people I don't know but I have added roughly 12 people I
have met on Live.
With the PS2, I only play with people I know in life.
Shit talkers and cheaters do ruin online gaming.
For me, and most people I know, gaming is an escape from everyday
life/reality and the last thing we want to deal with is some punkass
teenager that curses every other word or is using some sort of
cheat/hack/bug or glitch to have an unfair advantage against you..

You are an idiot. Gran Turismo 3 had no online crap, in fact
*NONE* of the previous Gran Turismo games had online garbage.
Didn't stop them from becoming the most sought-after games around.

It's not just your opinion. There are hell of a lot of people who couldn't
care less that there won't be a online feature in Gran Turismo 4.
I rather doubt online gaming would be either a major playing selling point
in a game like Gran Turismo 4 which isn't about crashing into or running the
other drivers/cars off the track/road which is what online racing crowd seems
to be all about these days.
I rather doubt the morons whining that there may not be a online gaming
feature in Gran Turismo 4 are fans of the Gran Turismo games.
They rather sound like they're fans of a movie called "Death Race 2000".

GT3 IS a great game...but WITHOUT damage, WITHOUT a viable cockpit and
WITHOUT an online component, it's just that...a game.
If I want to twiddle my thumbs...I can probably find other challenging

Online was one of the big FEATURED items in all GT4 previews.
This would be similar to releasing a new version of Madden Football and

My favorite game of all time!
The almost all of the guys I played with (a clan made up of all adults, cept
me *mind only* :) ) don't even play PC games anymore because nothing came
out that they have enjoyed as much as Q2.
A couple of the guys I know still play it!
I have since moved on to console gaming fulltime but I am holding out hope
that eventually another FPS game will give me the same rush Q2 once did.

I've tried it on the PC and tried it on the DCMe to man! I wasnt in a clan , but I remember being up till dawn for many
months playing rocket arena. I remember how the chat text was big enough so
you could actually chat and what not. Then q3 came out and the text was so
small, kind of took the sense of playing multiplayer with real people out of
it. Well at least for me anyways. Plus q3 just didnt do it for me.
But Ive been playing the ut2k4 demo which is cool. Battlefield 1942 desert
combat mod. But no that much.

Whenever I have gone online to play there is hardly anyone there, so I
end up playing offline anyways.
There is a group of us mates that get together about once a month,
link up 6 playstations using 4 TV's and 2 projectors. We mostly play
GT3, which is excellent over Firewire. We also use the PS2's online
too, but the 6 player GT3 link-up always ends up becoming the one to
play.
I for one do not mind there not being any online ability in GT4, I
bought all the GT series for the driving physics and graphics of the
game - which astounded me, and still do. What I would like however,
which needs improving (and is still the same in GT4-Prologue) is
better AI, which is massive pants.
I know of one person who has cancelled his pre-booking of GT4 from
Amazon due to the lack of online functionality, which to be honest,
was one of the major features of the game. Well atleast GT4 is
LAN'able and some of us do have the adapter, so we will simply switch
from Firewire to CAT45. So I will still be buying GT4.
I do not know how popular the PS2 is online, but I know the X-BOX is
massive and seems to chucking out online games like there is no
tomorrow - including driving games.

Personally I agree, no on-line is fine with me. But, as you're obviously in
the know...
Is the Fireware connection a standard firewire? or do I need to hunt down an
old PS/2 special cable? Trying to find one for our monthly race sessions (we
make do with either split screen - yuck, ghost car racing or timed runs).
Also, just a thought, but assuming you can network play, surely a wan is a
slightly slower lan, and as such, if you know the other machine's IP address
or something you can simply lan to that. But, to be honest I'm way out of my
depth with PS/2 networking as I don't know how they connect to the net, and
so perhaps some enlightened souls would let me know!

be enough to connect them. The fun begins when you try to connect more than
two machines. Then you need a firewire hub and cables with six wires on one

I'd bet a dollar that a hack to do just that will exist very soon after
GT4 comes out. Note that there are similar hacks for both the XBox
(mainly for Halo 1) and the Gamecube (the infamous Warp Pipe, though I
can't remember which game you're most likely to use it with).
Indeed, I was mildly surprised such hack was never created for a
firewire-based PS2-PC-Internet-PC-PS2 linkup for playing GT3, but I
think there are technical issues that may have made that tricky.
One caveat: there's more than one "standard" firewire. You want a 4-pin
to 4-pin cable. They're not the most common type, but should cost $10 or
less from a wide variety of sources. I don't know if they'd be the
cheapest source, but places that sell digital camcorders are likely to
have these, along with better AV or computer stores everywhere.
The trick is that 6-pin firewire cables are quite common, but will not
work. 4-to-6 cables are probably the most common type, since that's what
you need to connect a camcorder to a computer, most of the time (Sony is
almost alone in putting 4-pin Firewire connectors on their computers).
Just in case you care, the difference is that the extra two pins on a
6-pin cable carry power, so you can power or charge light-duty devices
(hard drives, iPods...) without an external power supply. The 4-pin
connector is smaller, though, so it is nearly standard on
space-constrained devices, which means digital video cameras.
Firewire (aka IEEE 1394) hubs are probably available in 4- or 6-pin
arrangements, but in either case are a somewhat rare item.
