Indycar 2 Keyboard Help needed

8 posts by 5 people · 15 Feb 1996 - 24 Feb 1996

Hi, I just got ICR2 and it looks really nice but I'm having difficulties controling the car. I played F1GP a lot (with sucess, so it not like I've never played those sims before) and liked the keyboard settings. I therefore want to use the keyboard with ICR2 but I find the car pretty hard to control that way. It either spins a lot or doesn't turn well enough. The main problem I have, however, is that the wheels seem to stay where they are once you turn them, and do not self center, like a joystick return to neutral when you let it go... I have to press the keys longer to cancel the previous turn and go in the other direction, which makes me lose time and often takes me out of the track, so it's a little tricky. Any help from someone with a good keyboard setup would be welcome (steering wheel numbers, keys assignments etc..). Thanks !

I know exactly how your feeling...first of all ICR2 is a dog with the keyboard, i play Indycar 1 with the keyboard at the road courses and it's brilliant! One thing though, set the track temperature to as high as possible, it will help a lot! ________ _________________ (_ |_| |____)imon | |armel - SYSOP of Explosion BBS - 01732 773369 ... I'll try next time, but in all fairness, it hasn't gotten any better since my original post! Maybe the Thrustmaster isn't the best thing to drive an indycar. It feels great in a dogfight, but not at laguna seca. Any setup help for laguna seca would be welcome, as well as driving advice in general... I'm really wondering if it's just that I can't set up the car properly and that the game is so realistic that you can't do well with an improper setup, or just that my joystick is innapropriate and that keyboard control SUCKS (correction, that's a fact)! I know, could be I can't drive, but I do have lots of real track time and lots of other sims experience under my belt, so I'm becoming frustrated !!! It still seesm to be a great game graphics wise, though ! Please, help ! ;-(

I'm really wondering if it's just that I can't set up the GD> car properly and that the game is so realistic that you can't do GD> well with an improper setup, or just that my joystick is GD> innapropriate Don't see why.....I can run respectable (but not record) times with a stick.....it's lack of practice and skill that holds me up. First thing.....whatever the settings from Papyrus recomend, with the Joysticks I've used (CH Pro normally) you'll need to cut the steering lock right down. It was the same in Nascar. A lot of their set-ups for road circuits are things like 18 degrees. It might just be my style of driving, but this is far too twitchy for me, it either understeers as the front slides away over-locked, or dives into the wall at the slightest correction. Try cutting down to something like 13 degrees.....even less for ovals I think. Driving Laguna.....great circuit but not easy. My times are around the 1.12 if I remember. Here's a few thoughts on getting round reasonably quick..... Down the pit straight, keep left and start a very gentle turn left as you reach the brow of the hill past the pit exit.....that way I keep the power flat out and drift a little through the kink and avoid being in the dirt when I want to brake......usually! B-) That first corner I tend to brake at the start of the red posters of the right-hand wall and take the corner in second, usually with a bit of a slide. If you hit the throttle too early you'll find the back end spinning away oversteering you into the wall, or you'll get crossed up into a slapper "correcting it". It's a long way around - a hairpin although it doesn't look like it on-track. Third corner (why _SO_ unimaginative, names for these things are so much easier and more evocative.....the Corkscrew or Turn 8.....no choice there.....OK in the UK there are loads of Copses.....but that's an aside!) you'll have spat the car up into third but brake in good time and make sure you're not too far to the left when you're braking.....easy to get a wheel on the dirt here which in Papayrus sims puts you into the walls. Another corner where you want to go easy on the power until you're sure you're straight, I've oversteered the back end around here with too much right foot too early far too often! Accelerate hard from there, turn in early on the next corner before you can actually see the apex and you can take it without lifting much, let alone using the brakes, in 4th. Even if you do drift onto the dirt, as long as you are gentle and don't over-react, you can get back on to clean tarmac fairly easily. Turn 5 I find difficult (does anyone else?) - you approach it in top and (if you've got into and through 4 quickly) you might have an overtake/outbrake chance here as the computer cars often don't do that section well. However, I've not got my entry speed sorted out for this.....all too often I'm either too fast/late and sliding into the wall infront, or have slowed too much and turn in too sharply so the front wheels are cutting into the dirt on the apex and......gosh, what a suprise - I'm spinning.....again! B-) When I've got it right the car is in 4th with mid-revs and that way you get a nice surge out. I use those adverts on the right as a marker to brake.....but as I say, this may not be right. Turn 6 is like 4, only sharper. You'll be in 5th (high revs) or 6th (low revs) as you pass under the bridge, I drop one cog and ease of the throttle here rather than actually brake, and again, turn in earlier than you can see, and you'll drift around. Droping the cog both gives you a surge out, and the power to catch a slide or spin before it's lethal.....if you're good/lucky! Up the hill, start braking as you see the crest with the floating tire marks.....you want your hard-braking approach to stick to the right on the entry (of Turn 8 I think this is) to get a good turn around into the mid-track portion of the down-hill part of the Corkscrew. You also need to scrub off all your speed....._any_ suggestion of a slide in this corner and it'll spit you off into a wall. If in doubt, take it slower.....it's safer. >Driving Laguna.....great circuit but not easy. My times are around the >1.12 if I remember. Here's a few thoughts on getting round reasonably >quick..... <snip> You have to brake for this earlier than you think. Get your speed down to 95 BEFORE you enter the turn, that way you can maintain that speed throughout. You should have finished your braking before you start to turn the wheel - the car is quite unstable through the corner. Enter the turn any faster than 95 and you'll understeer into the right hand wall - unless your setup is better than mine that is :) Be careful putting the power back on again, you have to wait until well after the apex or else you'll find yourself doing a 180 or understeering into the wall, it's a much tighter corner than it appears. Once you lined up again on the righthand edge of the track, put your foot down and away you go. NB - don't try and overtake on this turn, you NEED to keep to the best line. You have a much better opportunity at the corkscrew with a little outbraking maneuvre. Jules

Interesting you say that.....a number of comments I've seen from various sources have suggested that this isn't a good place.....too risky and too much a source of accidents. Any comments from anyone else? Cheers! --- * RM 1.3 U0414 * Shouldn't there be a shorter word for monosyllabic?

etc...etc....etc.... Thanks ! I got down to 1'18, a big improvement compared to last week's 7 spins per lap, as I got used to the joystick, but I still can't do it 8 laps in a row without a glitch. Gonna have to reduce those race distances !!! I'm still using the auto brakes/gears, so that may explain the bad times, but I just figured out how to spin less, so one thing at a time ! The ovals, i've discovered, are much easier to learn and enjoy the game early on, but being a F1 Fan I wanted to try laguna seca first for a real race track (sorry oval fans)., Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely check out the wheel lock thing !

RE: Controlling ICR2 First of all, if you're using a joystick for control, use the two buttons for gas/brake, not the forward/back axis of the stick, you'll have much better luck at road courses.<g> Also, when using a joystick, make sure you have NON-LINEAR STEERING selected in the options. And finally, try adjusting the WHEEL LOCK in the GARAGE/SUSPENSION menu. The higher the number, the more sensitive to input the car will be. Oh, one more thing, if you're not getting a decent frame rate, your control will suffer. If I can be of any more help, let me know!
