Finally a decent, honest review of RBR (demo)

Negative RBR demo review rewritten after criticism

cronik posted a review claiming the RBR demo was less realistic than Colin McRae Rally. Members mocked the reviewer's evident gamepad use and ignorance of setups, and soon noticed the review had been completely rewritten to praise the game. cronik admitted he was trolling, and a side conversation covered cycling to work.

To quote: "According to the publisher, Richard Burns Rally is the most realistic rally sim to date in terms of car handling, physics, and graphics. Unfortunately, after playing this demo, I must report that this is not the case at all. Colin Mcrae Rally 2004 or the recently released 2005 are both superior in terms of handling and physics, while the graphics are equally as good when comparing the two franchises." Couldn't agree more. http://www.pcgameworld.com/details.php/id/5530/

LOL!!!!! I think this sentence sums it up: "The steering tends to oversteer when you first tap left or right" "Tap" left or right......? Now I've never played the full release or the demo, but how can you comment on the realism of car handling in -any- game / sim* (*delete as appropriate) when playing with a joypad? Renders the opinion invalid IMO. Regards, Mark at v8thunder dot com

Well for one, the guy reviews the demo, not the game. But his main complaint regarding the physics seems to be that the cars understeer when he brakes while steering, and that IMO shows that he isn't really knowledgeable about racing cars or racing sims. Because one single look into the garage settings would have told him that perhaps the brake balance is set too much to the front, and that all he needs to do to cure his main gripe is to reduce the maximum front braking force from the original value (I think it's 6000 in the game) to something like 4500, and the car's behaviour under braking changes drastically. Please get me right, I'm not saying RBR's physics are super-duper, but basing such criticism on the gripe he bases it on is simply ignorant, as it's purely a matter of car setup. -- Achim http://users.skynet.be/AchimT

Yeah, he may not know a cars can be set up, maybe even didn't notice the cars setup. Raise the front diff torque and 50% of understeer is gone. It sure oversteer exiting corner if you slam the throttle... EL "Joachim Trensz" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

i especially like: "The car handling is just not as realistic... The cars don't seem to want to turn when you are braking at the same time."
Maybe Richard Manley (the author) should have the bits of RBR that he's missing, explained to him. Andi. I hate to burst your bubble but Codemaster admit their game is not as realistic as RBR. Nice try at winding people up though. _____ Steve "Military intelligence, two words combined that can't make sense." cronik wrote:

Yes, NOW the review is decent. Its been changed. "According to the publisher, Richard Burns Rally is the most realistic rally sim to date in terms of car handling, physics, and graphics. This may well be the case if this demo is anything to go by. The learning curve is a little steep coming off the Colin Mcrae series, which is substantially easier and less realistic, but that's what makes this sim so great!" cronik wrote:

Okay... this is freaking unbelievable!! The review has been changed *totally*! Did this guy Richard Manley ever play the demo, or what??? Cheers, Hans

Did this guy Richard Manley ever play the demo, or what??? This quote's hilarious: "Highly recommended if you're a rally fan! Immensely fun if you have a steering wheel and pedal set. This is probably the first rally sim to date in which a wheel is actually useable, and probably superior to keyboard." A racing sim where a wheel is probably superior to keyboard.... would you believe it!!! :))) What kind of an idiot is this??? Cheers, Hans
The differences in the article are hillarious!!! The reviewer must have a had a hell of a kick up the backside for writing this. I wish I had a copy of the orginal somewhere to fully quote. In the original, he wrote: "The car handling is just not as realistic... The cars don't seem to want to turn when you are braking at the same time." Now he writes: "Also the brakes feel like they don't slow you down fast enough, and the gravel track in the demo is a tad too slippery. But that could just be me, as I'm used to the more arcade-like car handling in the Colin Mcrae series." heheheh.. He was forced to admit that he's used to acade like driving. Good stuff folks for those that complained!!! "cronik" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Ok got it, here's what the reviewer wrote originally: "A fun demo, but unfortunately the game doesn't live up to the hype the publisher created. According to the publisher, Richard Burns Rally is the most realistic rally sim to date in terms of car handling, physics, and graphics. Unfortunately, after playing this demo, I must report that this is not the case at all. Colin Mcrae Rally 2004 or the recently released 2005 are both superior in terms of handling and physics, while the graphics are equally as good when comparing the two franchises. So, what's wrong with Richard Burns Rally? The car handling is just not as realistic as I had hoped. In fact, it doesn't really come close. Four wheel drive turbo vehicles (especially Million-dollar WRC cars) have some of the best handling of any race car. Yet in this demo, the cars handled more like old station wagons. The cars don't seem to want to turn when you are braking at the same time. The steering tends to oversteer when you first tap left or right, and then understeer once you actually start to turn. This makes it very difficult to accurately bring the tail out and slide around corners as you will usually oversteer. It also doesn't help when you are trying to correct a slide, as you have to then fight the understeer. Recommended if you're a rally fan, and good fun for a quick thrash around the tracks in this demo, but unless they make changes to the driving model I wouldn't recommend purchasing the game based on this demo alone. Demo review by Richard Manley."
That's astonishing! I only read the old one a few hours ago and was actually preparing a response. Damn I wish I had a copy of his original. Strange it still only get's 60%. me too Jan! You know, somebody has to save the planet, it's got to be us if it's not them. I do a healthy 12km to work and back total every day on my bicycles (with a 20min. train ride in between), and there simply is no better way to get to work and back then cycling (if you have the right clothing). I've tried it all, car, Honda CX500, but the bike / train / bike combo rules. You arrive fresh, in good shape and thoroughly woken up, even after a rough night out with the lads. People should try it sometime. uwe -- mail replies to Uwe at schuerkamp dot de ( yahoo address is spambox) Uwe Schuerkamp //////////////////////////// http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (52.0N/8.5E) GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61

I tried it but arriving at work in Summer sticky and dripping with sweat and then having to spend a day in an office in that state isn't the most appealing of things...

I think we even have a shower in the office, but 4km hardly warms me up, so it's seldom necessary. Also, most of the year it's either raining, snowing or both here, so sweat isn't all that much of a problem ;-) cheers uwe -- mail replies to Uwe at schuerkamp dot de ( yahoo address is spambox) Uwe Schuerkamp //////////////////////////// http://www.schuerkamp.de/ Herford, Germany \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ (52.0N/8.5E) GPG Fingerprint: 2E 13 20 22 9A 3F 63 7F 67 6F E9 B1 A8 36 A4 61
