Indycar 2 at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen really is an excellent track. It makes a change to have a flat - out section that isn't difficult to drive through. Picture This : Cross finish line, brake to fourth, clip apex up to sixth, ease off, turn in, flat out, climb to the left for the back straight - the back wiggles (controllable!), turn right along the back sraight (what an enjoyable track). Then heavy braking, down to third / second turn right, back wiggles, starts to slide (again controllable - just!), dab accelerator turn left then whoosh - around goes the back, completely uncontrollable, Okay, me-thinks just learn the track, however after trying at least 12 different lines in and out of the chicane (?), I still get very slippy in that corner, Neilly too has this problem at the start - through the flat out bit, I've tried softer rear shocks / larger rear wing, but to no avail. Please help, I just need a setup or some advice, me and Neilly just spend our time arguing so, to stop a severe split at The Pits, Please Help..... Cheers Steve and Jed or www.ukps.com/thepits
writes: The Glen is fun isn't it, how's the lap time....? From what I heard chatting to the guys on CompuServe, when you convert the NASCAR tracks to ICR2, all the shocks seem to be set at 100% (that's why the car is so loose through the uphill twists and undrivable at Bristol). With that in mind, try lowering rear pressures to get more grip and playing with sway bars to remove the tendency to swap gears. Without blatant chicane cutting I can hit a 57.xxx lap pretty consistently. Cheers! John PS - I'll post the full setup if you want it.

Wise words mate !!! - Steve
John Too ***y right I want your setup, in fact I'd morgage my house (that I don't have!), how do you get below the 1min mark, i'm struggling at about 1min02, I bow down to your superiority and excellence at ICR2 - enough grovelling...... Yes I would appreciate an e-mail of your setup, also any hints on reaching your most fabulous time around the circuit would be rather splendid, like can you get through the chicane in anything above 2nd /3rd gear??? Please send ASAP - I'm going madddd! Cheers -Steve

Ha! Ha! Ha! At last I have beaten you Steve! 59.330, including a spin in turn 4! Teach you to take the ***out of Nascar drivers! You can take it in 4th if you like and exit at 110mph! Hiya Steve! Okay, the setup was.... Tyre Compound PSI Camber Shocks RF Soft 33 -2.00 70% RR Soft 37 -1.10 50% LR Soft 37 -0.90 50% LF Soft 37 -2.00 70% Stagger : 0 F-Wing : 11.4 R-Wing : 12.6 Lock : 12 deg. F-Sway : 4 R-Sway : 4 B-Bal. : 7 Boost : 9 (of course!) Gears : 11.9 / 9.6 / 8.3 / 7.1 / 6.2 / 5.7 I take the chicane in second to get a good boost out. Actually the most difficult part is the left/right uphill section, my whole setup is based around that. I still can't _quite_ take it flat, I have a suspicion of a lift going through T2 and a similar lift just going into the uphill section. Once the car's straightened out up the hill it's flat on the gas until the chicane. It's amazing how late you can brake into the chicane as well - I was used to NASCAR and thumped the brakes at the first marker - kind of embarassing to come to a standstill a mile short of the chicane! Wooah! I tried this Wheel Lock setting out of curiousity as I've never modified it before. On my ECC CDS wheel this made steering MUCH ickier. I really had to twist the wheel to move the car. I like the sensitive control I had with the original setting. But that's just my preference of course! I tried your setup to see how it affected my car's rear end in the T2 and T3 right left uphill swoop just after the pit lane exit. This corner is awesome and I can take it flat out on very low boost on the default setup. When I crank up the boost my rear end flies out on the final uphill left hander of T3. With THIS setup I was losing the back end when I took the right hander of T2!!! This is really annoying and leaves me with a best time of 1:06.xx because I can't turn the boost up and have to ease it round what I reckon should be a flying set of corners. More setup I guess. Still, with the excellent NAS2ICR conversion utility (storming job especially because it includes a nice slogan instead of the track picture when you're selecting a track - very thorough!) I can now really enjoy this excellent circuit. Never did get into it much with Nascar.Talladega's the same, with the back end just flying out when I least expect it. Ah, that's what happens when you use inferior control devices you see, if you'd bought a TSW like me you'd be able to hold that curve no problem! I'm kidding (although I still reckon the TSW to be the best!). That's why you have a) the pedal NOT flat to the floor and b) the wheel lock lowered. With lower lock it forces you to be smoother in turning into and through the corners and lessens the force trying to step the back end out. With shocks apparently stuck at 100%, the only other options are playing with sway bars (possible), less front wing (slower through corner), more rear wing (slower on straights) or lower boost (sad accelearation). In this case you need to modify your driving style or change the setup. I've since run a 0:56.9xx WITHOUT cutting the chicane (cutting the chicane will easily take you to 0:54.xxx which I've seen posted here. I also have a really good 'Dega setup (249.8 mph) but since our styles are pretty different not much point in posting it! It certainly cures the back end stepping out - with the default setup I ALWAYS lost the back end through T3 before the dogleg. Agree with you about the utility, I never quite got into NASCAR as much as GP or ICR2, too ponderous for me I think. Indycars around those tracks are a whole new ballgame. I'm currently chasing a 1:15 around Sears which was set by one of the guys on CompuServe - one COOL lap I think! Cheers! John -- John Wallace Turnpike evaluation. Stu: Try this setup. Watkins Glen ---- 54.909 Front Wing 11 Bar 6 Shocks 100 Lock 12 R.Cam. -2.30 L.Cam. -2.00 Fuel 6 Gals. Boost 9 Gears 11.70, 9.00, 7.70, 7.00, 6.30, 5.60 Tire Press. 40- All Stagger +1.00 Rear Wing 18 Bar 4 Shocks 70 R. Cam. -1.90 L. Cam . -1.10 Turn one is approached in 6th gear and shortly after top of hill ( track changes color) downchange to 2nd. Turn one taken around 115 to 120. Turn two is 5th gear, very late apex around 155+. The trick is the stagger which helps the rear end from coming around. You'll need to be up against the right fence to be on the proper line for the left hander. A nice easy turn in ( can be taken sometimes flat out ) puts the car in the middle of the track , hitting the apex at 176 to 178 leading on to the back straight. Chicane is 3rd gear (not using much of the track) and if done fast enough, you will be at redline going into the sweeper ( taken at 130 or so ). Up to 6th and just before the left the track will change color to a light grey, downshif to 4th, nick the grass and back into 5th for a short period. Back down to 2nd and through the last corner . You should be up to 5th gear by the time you cross start/finish. Have a try at it. Let me know if it works for you. -Niki
How do you define 'cutting the chicane'? Do you mean you are cutting the chicane if you just touch the grass, or how? I tried to drive the chicane without cutting, but I noticed I had the tendency to drive a little off the track at the exit point. So, I could not judge when I was cutting and when not, and started to drive as fast through the chicane as possible. I'm using your setup, John, and though it is quite tricky to drive through the fast turns with joystick, I've still managed a 0:54.394.
