RARS is the Robot Auto Racing Simulation, a competition for
programmers and an on-going challenge for practicioners of Artificial
Intelligence and real-time adaptive optimal control. It consists of
a simulation of the physics of cars racing on a track, a graphic
display of the race, and a separate control program (robot "driver")
for each car. All RARS software and activities are free and open to
the public. It runs on DOS, Windows, OS/2, UNIX, Linux, and several

Submissions
Please! Any people who want to submit for the first time please
give yourselves more than a day or two (I made that mistake when
I started). Submissions are to be SOURCE CODE only (unless in
the unlikely event you use Borland C++ for OS/2).

My mistake
In the previous racing session I had used the wrong car for
Ferdinand T. By agreement we voided his car (FerdRARi), this gives
Lisa a clear victory and 1 point towards expert status. My
apologies to Ferdinand.

no one claims to have an official clean copy (with ends matching),
I am putting my copy here.

The drivers will be uploaded to ftp.ijs.com to a file called
driv0107.zip in 1-3 days. These will only be the new drivers
updated this session (Ramdu, Lisa).

The novices had 5 contestants so I ran the 3 slowest experts along
with them.
8 cars for 80 laps. The track was fiorano.trk. The drivers were:
FerdRARi, Lisa, Sarah, Sneezy, Heath4, Phill, Marvin, and Carski.

With 3 cars dying in the first 3 laps, I had expected all the rest
of the cars to be able to finish the race. Lisa had a lot of damage
from the start and crashed into the bottom right wall trying to
pass Sarah. Combined with small incidents and the final smack
into the rear of Sarah, Lisa was out. Heath had many tangles with
Marvin throughout the race. Out goes Heath.

Sarah colided with Phil and Carski. Sneezy couldn't avoid the wall
after the hairpin. The rest of the race was eventless except that
if Lisa hadn't pitted twice in the race, as opposed to FerdRARi,
she would have won.
Since the experts only had 7 competitors I ran the third place
finisher Heath4 along with them.

Phill of course couldn't complete the track solo. Ramdu was in first
place for the first 20 laps. It flew through the last dogleg left
before braking into the hairpin. When there was a car just in front
of him, he tended to hit either hit the inside or outside wall, or the
car. This was enough to do him in (I think he hit Marvin). Heath,
FerdRARi and Lisa had a major tussle for the first 10 laps or so,
leaving all of them majorly damaged, except for lisa who was late into
the tussle because of an earlier collision with the wall. Jas also hit
marvin and ralph a few times at two of the hairpins. By lap 30 or so,
Jas was in 'hold on for your life' mode. But even that didn't prevent
ralph from passing and hitting jas or jas passing and hitting marvin.
Lisa who just promoted from novice today wins the race.

Ramdu was in first until the lap he died. Collisions with Marvin and
Phill and a extreme sensitiveness to the line he's on were the
cause of his death (imho). FerdRARi ran into the wall on that
long straight while near another car (passing?). Heath
suffered damage with Phill and Marvin and was eventually taken
out of the race. Jas was in second while trying to pass ralph,
he got squeezed onto the side at high speeds (4000+ damage) since
jas was at 25000 anyway, he died. Phill slid off during that old
refuelling thing. Lisa wins again. I was hoping to get the extreme
pleasure of seeing Marvin give Phill lots of damage as those two
were the bane of all the other cars, but Phill passed Marvin
cleanly so I had no such pleasure.

Stef2(15), oval2(20), v03(15), anew(8), speed2(10) and
zandvort(10). There were two races on each track (alternating
start positions). With these short races, perhaps collisions
won't govern the outcome.

Comments from Ralph
Build a better "avoid car" routine and the world will beat a
path to your door. How many times do the results drill this
into your heads. Look deep into my eyes, you are getting
sleepy, 'your car will survive 80 laps' ... repeat after
me... :-)
If theres any time to be an unlimited Novice, it is now. With only
four or five novices your chances are good of quickly moving to
expert quickly.
Labambi was a late entry who I ran for comparison purposes only.
Just for the hell of it (and I didn't need to watch).
