Help !!! ICR2 Surfer's Paradise

16 posts by 9 people · 16 Dec 1995 - 23 Dec 1995

I got ICR2 yesterday and I've been trying to get a decent time at Surfer's Paradise. The best I can manage is 1'32 but the computer controlled cars run up to 1'28 ! This track used to be so easy on ICR1 - I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. The manual suggests some ridiculous gears for some of the corners - like 5th gear for the chicane on turns 7 & 8. Surely they can't be serious ! The best I can manage through that is 4th gear *very* carefully indeed. All donations gratefully received...

I was wondering that also. The line the AI cars take through that chicane is impossible for player-controlled cars, especially at that speed. I've since thrown out the book on that and prefer to find my own line around the tracks.

The best I can : manage through that is 4th gear *very* carefully indeed. I certainly couldn't match the gearing suggested in the manual. I figure that this track is mostly slow turns, so I decreased the wings up to the point where I would start to lose hard braking capabilities. I then changed the lower gears to "peak" just before I started braking for the slower turns. The real trick to this track (and Long Beach too), is to set up the car to get you through the corners with the car in perfect balance to lay down the power coming out. If I remember correctly I also played with the suspension and tire compound to try and even out the tire temps. ICR2 is a whole new ball game! -- **************************** Michael E. writes: Glenn, over on the Sports Sims forum on ComuServe, people are already posting 1:27.xxx laps as the norm. Personally my best is 1:29 but I know there's a lot can come off that. These times are pretty impossible in a race (as there's a real chance of destroying your car) but try taking the second chicane flat in third (I have a slight "confidence lift" just as I turn in), it should be possible with just a slight turn to the right. The main place to make up time is through the "esses" - 120-140mph is possible and going through in a straight line. Just practice, it can be done. Probably 1:26 is about the peak time for this track I suppose. Cheers! John -- oooO _ _ Oooo John Wallace, Edinburgh (Scotland) ( ) / ) ( \ ( ) CompuServe : 100347,3560 \_)(___) (___)(_/ oooO Oooo

Are you driving in SVGA?. Frame rates effect lap times. Compare lap time in SVGA to VGA and notice the difference, also the car handles much better and smoother(feel not graphics) in vga. Current setup is a pentium P60 with 16MB all textures off, objects on. Most tracks I can get 20fps but Australia, Long Beach & Vancouver need to be played in vga. -- Simon Fox Information Systems Division University College London

Well, I more or less agree with you. I also used to play ICR1, but now ICR2 is more difficult (and perhaps more realistic). I own a T1, and wow, heavy work in the***pit ! It looks like the driving model is better, although tougher to master. I noticed that drifting and understeering/oversteering happens quicker now, and you have to break real early, otherwise it's bye bye. Take for instance Long Beach. You have a very long "straight" after start/finish, with a very light curve. Well, in ICR1 this was no problem, but in ICR2 if I steer the car tends to drift a lot ! This is also true for certain other circuits, where easy corners become very difficult to master (and I am not even talking about the "obstacles" on the track). Anyway, I think Australia is great for it's many chicane's, which were relatively easy in ICR1, but in ICR2 you have to do a lot of early breaking. Also, I think that Cleveland (the airport) is better, because I now have more a clue of where I am driving, and where the next corners bends to. In ICR1 it was always difficult to find out where you were, and what direction to drive to (after-crash situations). So, now I ask Papy, when will they make a karts game, so *can* do better than MPS (VK sucks). Or is it now Sierra's decision ? Success

I *always* play in VGA. I don't know why everyone else wants SVGA so badly. You see more, ok. But I prefer smoothness and reaction/response over too much detail. ---------------------------------------- - This message was brought to you by - - - "Chapo!" ---------------------------------------

I have a 16Mb P90 with a Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM. I run ICR2 in SVGA minus the grass and road textures and find the frame rate to be very smooth (although I can't give you a definite FPS figure). I've tried running it in VGA but any speed gain here seems to be negated by not being able to see the corners properly.
<snip> By the "esses" do you mean the chicane at turns 7 & 8 ? I can manage this at around 100mph in 4th. I've been doing the second chicane in 3rd with a *big* confidence lift. My best is currently 1:30.1 and I feel a 1:29 might be possible but 1:26 ? Do some versions of the game have cars fitted with infinite improbability drives ? :)
>Think about this: the line the AI cars take was recorded by a human driver >at those speeds. It's all in the setup... Wow ! Who does your recorded laps - Jean Alesi ? (Insert your favourite driver here !)

Rick, I've done a 1:27.8 at Surfers, so it _is_ possible. There's a few little tricks to discover about the chicanes. That time was in a Lola/Cosworth/Firestone combo with 85 degrees, no wind and realistic damage. I love the circuit, especially the bumpy chicanes... I miss just a couple of apexes ever so slightly. My setup wasn't even that great. A 1:26 is definitely on the cards. Have a good Christmas. Mike.

says... Really!! :) Hmmmmmm....maybe I'd better practice Surfer's some more. I still think the line thru the chicane is rather suspect :o
writes: By "esses" I meant the "S" shaped turn 11 (the tight twisty bit which the AI go through like their on E or something. These I can take around 130-140mph. As for 1:26, the hot-lap on CompuServe is already approaching mid 1:27 and the game's hardly released. Most of the top guys haven't spent a lot of time there - when they do I expect the record to fall quite a bit. Australia is quite a tricky circuit, there are a LOT of difficult corners. Most tracks have only one or two really tough corners which makes making a good lap is relatively easy (Long Beach for example). Australia has at least 7 corners which are more difficult than average - when you hit a lap (eventually!) with all of these correct time will be phenomenal. I've done a 1:29 and I would only the first two chicanes and the esses I was really happy with. Cheers! I know exactly what you mean about putting a good lap together. Most of the time I will get some of the turns right, but it really does take a special lap on this track with all the turns virtually perfect to get a decent time. My best time is now 1:29.630. I've lost count of how many laps I've done on this circuit now but this is virtually the only one I've driven since I got the game a week ago. I find my best laps when I'm *not* trying - I think some sort of Zen trance might help improve my lap times !
