Spinouts in ICR/ICR2/Nascar

Why the HELL is it so DAMN EASY to spin out in these games???? I HIGHLY doubt the real cars will spin that easily..... Not so much on the ovals, but like I said in a previous post, the road courses seem to be paved with a mixture of Duralube and Soapy water. It's just NUTS..I can hardly get around one lap w/o spinning out somewhere.. BUT..I DO like ICR2...241 MPH (straightaway max speed, at 3:30 a.m., half asleep, with a joystick and up/down keys) at Michigan....oh yes...I do like it ALSO! I just remembered...WHERE is there a place to switch from VGA to SVGA mode in the Papyrus games? my computer defaults to VGA mode for the full versions of the games, but when I ran my Nascar Demo CD (from the CH pedals I returned, and convieniently forgot to return the Nascar Demo..oops) it defaults to SVGA mode...how do I regain control over this? Thanks, Bill

First, the command line for SVGA is nascar -h. Remove the -h for VGA. Second, these cars are putting out tremendous hp to the wheels. They aren't sticky when they are cold, so let them warm up some (150+). Also, if you're like my friend, the gas never leaves the floor once you start sliding, making it worse. I will admit that while Atlanta is ok, Darlington is a rink, no matter what setup I've tried.

Reminds me of a friend who graduated from SCCA sports sedans to a Merlin Formula Ford; first lap out of the box, in a big sweeper onto the front straight at a local club race track, looped it big time. He cruises into the pits, remarks "these formula cars are sensitive SOB's!" Watch F1 or Indy racing coverage from in-car cameras on road courses, and look for the pilots to steer INTO the wall (at God-knows-what-speed) to correct an oversteer. The top F1 guys don't get paid the 10-15-20+ Megabucks to drive a car glued to the ground. pwb

My experience is that these simulators on PCs will spin out much easier than in a real car. I suspect this is due to the lack of three more MAJOR sensory inputs in a real car: 1. sense of rotation and rotational acceleration 2. sense of directional acceleration 3. steering wheel feedback Really IRC2 and all the others only give you visual cues as to what the car is doing and unless you can run 30+ frames per second at hi-res you aren't even getting those cues correctly. Squealing tires, simulates acceleration levels but what direction? Anybodys guess. And yes my experience WAS that the cars did just about what you thought, so that made them very easy for me to drive. Just don't think spin. I still think RACE DRIVIN' (ATARI arcade game) is the best simulator.
: I still think RACE DRIVIN' (ATARI arcade game) is the best simulator. Race Drivin' is still my favorite, but it needs to be updated. It was mind blowing a few years ago, but today it's graphics and sound are ho-hum, to me anyway. Does everyone else reading this newsgroup always head straight for the driving games at the arcade? =)

Rick, how about some more "power" so we can spin the car around when we're sitting backwards on the track "after the fact".... when you run with a low steering lock you gotta pull up, back up, etc... <<< Well, in IndyCar Racing II there is a driving aid called "spin recovery" that, after you finish your spin, corrects your orientation in 3 seconds. You basically get to do the same "Batman U-turn" that the AI cars get to do. As for having spin recovery in NASCAR, well.... Rick Genter Technical Lead, IndyCar Racing II Papyrus Design Group, Inc.

SEGA rally is my current waste of quarters tho... Robh.

EEERRRRR..... with all do respect.... SEGA Rally and SEGA Daytona are two different types of racing... so it's hard to tell which one is better than others... BUT..... I still have to say that Daytona still ROCKS.... I tryied Rally several times.. Money NOT well spent I tell ya... so I guess I will stick to Daytona..!!! Rally ... NAAAAAAA
|We just had a group attend the Skip Barber driving school to learn to |drive Formula 4 cars. One comment that I heard repeated several times was |"if you just *think* about it the car will spin out." The real cars |apparently can spin even more easily than the game... Rick, This is a little late, sorry. I've driven the (now) Formula Dodge cars that Skip has. These cars do *not* spin out if you "think" about it. In fact, these cars have a much more stable feeling than my so called street sports car. I think the problem with these games is that you can't feel what is going on, hence you can't correct the problem until it's too late. For example, at Lime Rock, turn three is a "compromise" turn where you don't hit the apex in the "normal" spot. This makes the car feel very strange and the rear end becomes very light. I've spun here several times, not because the car is twitchy, but because I overcorrected. Many of the proper corrections I made were done before the car started to visually go wrong - the steering would get light and less responsive, the car would lean, and also, the amount of pressure you feel on your right shoulder also gives significant input. Another difference I've found is the ability to correct problems with the throttle. ICRII is better at this than NASCAR, but still, spins occur when it looks like they shouldn't. This is also probably related to the "feel" problem mentioned above. Great game though! greg -- ------ "Nobody scores my navigator and gets away with it!" - Calamity Jane, DR2000

Hard to tell which is better? Are you sure we're talking about the same arcade games here? :) Daytona's GFX, SFX, car handling and just about everything else is nowhere near Sega Rally's standard. Not just that, but the sit-down Daytona models are _terrible_ in comparison. Far too cramped - and you can't tell me you actually like that stoopid seat-wobble of Daytona!?!? There's a lovely feel of feedback from Rally's steering that seems better than Daytona's. You can put on the powerslides and hang it out 'round the corners (even tho you won't win that way ;)) And for a four-player race, you can't beat the close competition. It feels much more like a proper "sim", than the poor GFX Daytona environment. Anyone else agree? -- ~~_______~~ _______________[__]=[_(-)_]=[__]_______________ --

yes, I like rally better than daytona... the steering response, and the dirt track enviroment, puddles, jumps, speed, spinn outs.. its all there.. daytona IS a good game, but not as good as rally. Now what i'd like to see is someone put this game out on CD for pc, like Need for speed. that would rock, I'd buy it in a second!! Btw: is distruction derby any good? it looks cool on playstation.
