An interesting project here if you're looking for something new:

It's a very interesting project, but feels a bit too "Shifty" so far. I do worry
that the somewhat unsettling controls are fundamental to that engine.
There is hope for improvement though, and cranked up to max it looks absolutely
gorgeous. It also, sadly, makes my 5870 cry with any FSAA on, and without FSAA
there are graphics problems.
Still, new build & track Friday.

Man, this is going to be sweet! Because the relationship between Slightly
Mad Studios and EA was severed, there will be no further patches/fixes to
Shift 2 Unleashed. I like Shift 2, but it needs some work. Now there's a
chance to start fresh and take the publisher out of the picture. And,
instead of bolting on a PC port after the fact, this one is getting PC
loving straight out of the chute. If an early alpha looks this good, (and
it looks REAL good) then the final product will be a game changer. Can't
wait!
Signed up on the Forum, how do you get access to the downloads?

10 Euros (minimum) to play a beta????
Is that correct?

>Yes. Got to the same point after signing up to the forum and there
does appear to be an entry fee. However I understand it's a onetime
fee (unlike another sim where you have to pay monthly to participate
as they develop it.) Also don't know what happens when it goes from
beta to production, for example to you get a discount of the release
version, or get it for "free" if you paid up to one of the higher
levels?
I wonder how many signed up for the 25k subscription? Is there some
sort of return for this kind of investment?
Very interesting project.

There's all sorts of details on the website, including their business plan. I'm
half tempted to take a small gamble (in investment terms), because my savings are
shrinking by the day thanks to the global decision to punish savers and reward risk
takers. But it's a bit early to be calculating whether Slightly Mad stand a chance
of meeting their goals.
EA may be annoying, but the NFS franchise is worth a lot of guaranteed sales, so
it's hard to predict independent success from previous sales.
Interesting ride though, and I've already sunk a lot of money into iRacing with an
absolute, 100% guarantee of 0% return on my money. Not quite as much as John Henry,
but probably about the same amount as a proportion of our total wealth. :-)
Interesting times for sim racers. Competition is good, because otherwise evolution
doesn't work.

It's not our fault you can't read the website. :-p
I went for the 25E option. It's more than I've paid for either Shift1 or 2, but I
did see a lot of potential in Shift2. If they can sort out the control issues with
this engine (for wheel users, who are only part of the target market) then I'm sure
it'll be worth it. Essentially I just paid for the game very early.
Just as it's been entertaining paying for iRacing's ongoing experiment with never
ending development, it'll be interesting watching Slightly Mad trying to wrangle
with the mismatch between their goals and the varied demands of their audience. And
we all know what a self-destructive crowd we can be. :-)
I anticipate many bunfights along the way, and nothing is more satisfying than a
good fight over something truly trivial like computer gaming. :->
