Need For Speed add ons?

Hopes for Need for Speed car and track add-ons

After trying the PC demo of EA's The Need for Speed, a player asked whether add-on cars and tracks would follow. Others shared hints for unlocking the bonus track and car and listed dream cars such as the McLaren F1, Ferrari F50 and Jaguar XJ220, while some wanted more ordinary road cars, motorcycles or network play. No add-on plans were confirmed.

Hi, I just picked up the 3.7mb demo of EA's Need for Speed, and I am really impressed. If I do buy this game, will I be stuck with the same old stuff, or is EA planning on coming out with add on disks for tracks, cars, etc? (a la Test Drive III). I've had a few games of this type, but they were all sort of mediochre... NFS is the first driving game (demo, technically) that's made me sit back and say "WOW!". The first I dropped the clutch on the Viper, I could almost smell $600 in tires going up in smoke... I'm hoping to get the full CD version the next time I'm out to the store, especially if EA is going to support this game with future add ons. Has anyone heard anything? Thanks! -Jon- .-------------------------------------------------------------------------. | Jon Steiger == DoD# 1038 == USUA# A46209 == NMA# 117376 == KotWitDoDFAQ | | 1991 Yamaha FZR600R /* Just another mangy hacker */ | `-------------------------------------------------------------------------'

Well, they just might, but for starters, the game has 6 tracks, which is twice what the original (3DO) version had. It's also got a bonus track and a bonus car which are fantabulous. I wouldn't exactly call it a skimpy game by any means... --Evan

Well, here's a hint: to get the extra car (and some other fun stuff), you need to do axactly twice as much as you did in getting the extra track. After you've done that, be sure to check out the credits. --Evan

It should be easy to make car and track upgrades. If NFS gets popular enough (in sales), they will probably make some add-ons. Hmmm. So I'd have to win the turny *twice*? I have yet to win on any track but rusty, so that should be quite awhile in the future. Do I have to use the same player name or what? rms

What do you mean by doing exactly twice as much as you did in getting the extra track? please explain (layman terms) what we have to get the extra track & car. Thanks. Raven

A 20 or 30 CD ROM set of "Race Across America" scenery would be cool (dreaming again). Authentic state patrol cars, authentic Interstate route... Actually, I'd guess we'll see tracks instead of cars for add-on, even though they've fairly well represented most of the terrain you'd want to race on... SC

Please Lyle, don't give them any ideas, they already have some pretty lame cars in there, namely the 911 and the RX7 (which if the models of the cars performance is based on reality, Porsche needs to sell out and make vacuum cleaners, the car can't get out of it's own way). The Acura NSX is a bit gutless on twisting turns but great on straights (too bad there aren't alot of straight lines on the tracks). The car in the game that surprised me the most was the Viper, very solid and...American made. The Vette is so-so in the game, you never see it win. One car that saved my bacon on winning some races in the tournament mode is the Toyota Celica Supra....a real rice burner, buzzy, torquey and you can toss the nose around a bunch and the car is very forgiving. Since I can't afford a Ferrari or Lambo at the moment, the Supra would be a nice $250,000-less compromise. I do agree with the 300ZX (Twin Turbo) idea and maybe the 3000 (If they made it the Spyder and put the top down). I'm wondering where the Lotus is.... Regards, SC

Along with some of those cars out in the stratosphere, of course. :-) It would be kinda neat to see how an "ordinary" car would take those courses... Immagine doing some of thse courses in a Honda CRX, a Dodge Dakota, "ordinary" cars, though I don't think there'd be enough interest to make it worth R&T's or the programmers' time... : Of course, ultimately, I'd like to see the NFS engine used to do a decent : motorcycle simulator, but I guess this is kind of the wrong newsgroup for : that. That would be really great! R&T was the one who did that huge 0-100-0 compro and threw in a ZX-7 for kicks, which proceeded to thrash the cars so bad that it wasn't even funny. :-) I'd love to take some of these tracks on a ZX-11, FZR1000, etc. Thought of something else... What about a utility that would allow you to build your own car? You could choose body panel shapes, or cut your own, choose a realistic (or create your own fantastic) engine, and then load these cars in. I'd love to give all the computer opponents Ford Festivas, and then pull in some 4000hp beast with 3g's of cornering ability, etc. for myself... :-) Hey, I'd pay more than the game cost for something like that!!! BTW: I'm not really familiar with games of this type... How would such add on cars be used? Do you load them from the game, or copy them over the original files, or something? Well, I've rambled way too long! :-) I hope someone from EA is listening, and that NFS's sales do great... I'd love a car/track editor... That would be even better than add ons, IMHO. With the old test drives, you'd have add-on disks for the cars and the tracks. I used to play test drive II on my IIgs, and I had do quite a lot of disk swapping anytime I used the addons. I'd imagine any upgrade for NFS will have you swapping CD's, or just copy some stuff to the hard disk. --------- Lon Seidman http://www.pcnet.com/~lon ---------- Public keyring available on my web page. -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----- Version: 2.6 owHrZJjKxMqo/+RLZfZzU1YVx6K1jIzOr1kYGqJ3q5t3R/GIflK/sV41fY+1l/m5 bzX3XpjeUvX79bB336ublbkb8xWSmuMmsN16e2W9ldv7tc3BLD3HlujntUmu0ctm Ze862eh3T6p03qGX2ar6XqEdB700D3UHN3x/u219wvXg9NyeN+8r/GemF8zrXrbk u0LE4erkAl/XN5XJBQIH97KvaS+RSLbSz8wrSS3KSy3RL85Mz0ssKS3SK0hOZQAC XRjg5fLJz1MITs1MyU3M4+XKyc9zKEgG6tBLzs/l5SqGiDuUZiSWJVboZSQWlaTl F6XopaaU8nJllJQUWOnrl5eX68G16NcBTeDlghuvCwA= =RHly -----END PGP MESSAGE-----

That would be cool. I'd especially like to see a computerized remake of Connecticut's Route 9. Another great add-on would be the M3 BMW and the Audi A4, and something more down to earth like a Yugo.. You could drive it against traffic and see how far up in the air the on-coming traffic could knock it. --------- Lon Seidman http://www.pcnet.com/~lon ---------- Public keyring available on my web page. -----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----- Version: 2.6 owHrZJjKxMqo/+RLZfZzU1YVx6K1jIzOr1kYGqJ3q5t3R/GIflK/sV41fY+1l/m5 bzX3XpjeUvX79bB336ublbkb8xWSmuMmsN16e2W9ldv7tc3BLD3HlujntUmu0ctm Ze862eh3T6p03qGX2ar6XqEdB700D3UHN3x/u219wvXg9NyeN+8r/GemF8zrXrbk u0LE4erkAl/XN5XJBQIH97KvaS+RSLbSz8wrSS3KSy3RL85Mz0ssKS3SK0hOZQAC XRjg5fLJz1MITs1MyU3M4+XKyc9zKEgG6tBLzs/l5SqGiDuUZiSWJVboZSQWlaTl F6XopaaU8nJllJQUWOnrl5eX68G16NcBTeDlghuvCwA= =RHly -----END PGP MESSAGE-----
> < snip > I'm pretty firmly of the opinion that all the cars have their place (well, except maybe the ZR-1, which I'm not overly fond of), depending entirely on what track you're running. There is also the angle of handicapping- if you're playing multiplayer against someone with a lot less experience, take the RX-7 or NSX and give him the Supra or even the 512TR. I'm a pretty big fan of the 512TR on faster courses like Rusty Springs or City, but when you get on a course like Alpine or Vertigo Ridge, a slightly slower car is simply easier to handle (not sure how this would apply if the game could do some sort of analog steering on the keyboard... my main gripe about this game is the "on/off" steering and throttle). Boy, talk about struggling to get out of it's own way... -LjM -- James | Social Engineer | 93 Kaw ZX-6E | means never having | E O E Mackey | BitterCynicalSOB | DoD #587 | to say "Thank you, | E U A v1.0 | Beer Snob | "Pinky" | drive through." | D R D
R&T does 5th-wheel tests on most of the cars they do comprehensive tests on in the first place, it doesn't seem like it'd be too tough to plug the values into the various places and... Of course, I'm not a programmer, so... Actually, it was a ZX-9R, but you were close... Yeah, I'd love to run a ZX-11 against the 512TR... Let me do the things I have the good sense not to do on the real roads on my wimpy little ZX-6... But of course, the computer would STILL come in right behind you. The computer adjusts to compensate for your own level of skill (or sucktitude, depending...). Ever seen an NSX hit a top speed of 162 MPH on Rusty Springs? Try a head-to-head against the computer with you in the 512TR and the computer in the NSX. I'm afraid we'd have to- probably kind of a limited appeal. If x people buy the game, only x-y people would buy the add-ons. Now, if x was a sufficiently high number... Depends entirely on how the game is coded. I assume it'd have to be patched to allow the game to read info from any car files that happen to be in the car directory. As it is, it's hard-coded to only look for the specific models. I'm not sure about a track editor. It's not as simple as a tile-based track system like Stunts (for example) used. The 3-d scenery would be a little bit hard to code for Joe User. I believe on the box or in a promo or something I read something about EA using SGI renderings for the track scenery. Too bad for the editor idea, but very cool for the game itself... The car editor, however, would be pretty cool. Just max out all the right values and min out the right values and... Though you'd also have to include code to handle front wheel drive... hm. -LjM -- James | Social Engineer | 93 Kaw ZX-6E | means never having | E O E Mackey | BitterCynicalSOB | DoD #587 | to say "Thank you, | E U A v1.0 | Beer Snob | "Pinky" | drive through." | D R D

Yes indeed. How about a 916 or one of the Grand Prix 500 bikes. Scary! As for new tracks, how about the Isle of Man TT circuit. There certainly seems to be a lack of such two wheeled thrills in games. Maybe designers feel that not enough people ride bikes these days and so they wouldn't be interested in a game. I would certainly fork out for a motorcycle verion.:-) Graham. ***************************************************************************** * * * * From a brochure of a car rental firm in Tokyo. * Graham Davies * * * * * When passenger of foot heave in sight, tootle * * * the horn. Actually it would be better if it was a motocross game instead of a road racing game... I still play the OLD Motocross game I bought back in 1988 or was it 1989? Anyhows, its still a kick in the ***to triple jump, although, it runs kind of fast on my p5-133... heh, considering it used to run just right on my 386-sx16... It would be great if they could do both....I mean, there is a sand track in NFS.... There are all sorts of possibilities, but the first thing I hope they do is put out an add-on disk...I hope they don't just stop with NFS. --Evan

RJ->Anyways, would SOME game manufacturer PLEASE make a decent motocross ->game/sim with the ability to build yer own tracks??? I remember playing ->E***bike on the NES till my thumbs were numb, that game ruled for ->one reason, you could build your own jumps and get some *** tracks ->going... The Motocross game on the Genesis 32X isn't bad, now if ->someone would take that, SVGA it, and add a track builder, all for the ->PeeCee, I probably wouldn't have to play DOOM ][ deathmatch so damn much! I used to play E***bike alot too!! Think thats why Stunts was so popular? Gee...I only have collected over 500 tracks for that game. I never play anymore; I like to do my stunts in NASCAR now. <g> ... Genealogy: It's all relative in the end anyway.
