Is this going to be a WIN/95 product? I've seen screenshots of
the game running in s GUI _as_ a GUI app (not as a windows DOS app I mean)
If this's true, will Indycar 2.0 use any of the DirectDraw APIs,
3DDI, Reality Lab 3D stuff when running under WIN/95? I hope
so can't imagine any other way they'll get a decent frame rate
Anybody confirm this? Email if possible

IndyCar Racing II on Windows 95 and 32-bit code
Users asked whether IndyCar Racing II would be a native Windows 95 product and run full screen. Rick Genter of Papyrus explained that IndyCar and NASCAR already used the 32-bit DOS/4GW extender, that the WinG version would take over the screen at 640x480, and joked that the OS/2 market was too small. Bryon La's claims about 16-bit code drew corrections, and OS/2 supporters argued for a port.

Yes I'm almost certain its to be a WIN/95 product so that it will be 32-bit which I hope leads to a faster frame rate.

Win95 isn't anyway (yawn, mail me flames). If you have a 15" monitor, are you
really going to want the game in a window?? I doubt it very much. I seriously
think that Win95 (assuming it flies, it probably will 'cause Microsoft could
sell sand- admittedly low quality sand- in the desert) will sell a ton of
high-end systems, since there's NO WAY an OS like Win95 (or even OS/2 or Linux)
will run within a session as fast as DOS alone. You think that you'll get
something like WC3 running in a window with anything less than a high-end
system?? No dice-ola. Save for your next system now....

IndyCar Racing II will be released simultaneously for DOS, Windows 3.1,
Windows 95 and Power Macintosh.
While we do use DirectDraw on Windows 95, we also support WinG, as we have
found that in some cases DirectDraw leads to a slower frame rate than
WinG. In our testing to date, the optimal frame rate under Windows 3.1
(WinG), Windows 95 (WinG) and DOS are nearly identical.
The code is 32-bit on all platforms. (Always has been, always will be .

Yeah sure right. The only MS 32-bit platform is NT. And what's
the big deal about 32-bits anyway? Some of us have moved on to 64-bit
and higher. It would be nice if DOS would die and Intel would get their
heads out of the sand.

Both IndyCar and NASCAR use DOS/4GW, a 32-bit DOS extender from Tenberry
software. Basically the extender runs the application in protected mode
with the selectors mapped to a flat, 32-bit address space.
Next time, Bryon, try not being so cynical. Not *everyone* is out to***

Ah, you forget that IndyCar, NASCAR, DOOM, and countless other games use
a 32-bit DOS extender. What would DOS dieing have to do with Intel? Intel
makes the processor, not the software.

Aaarrrghh!!.. I sure don't want to play _any_ simulator in a window.
How can you get a feeling of 'being there' if the game runs in a
little window, surrounded by icons and stuff.... bwaaark!

Please tell me that the game will NOT run in a window, but
full-screen... PLEASE ! :-)
Also, will the game be using extra hardware, like 3D-accelerator
cards?... (hint, hint..) ;)

If you use WinG, and you have your monitor set to higher resolution than
640x480, we will take over the screen, but your field of view will be
640x480 centered on a black background. We didn't feel good about trying
to push 1024x768 to the screen.
Initially we will not use 3D acceleration hardware, though by using
DirectDraw we hope to gain some acceleration pushing pixels to the screen.

Well, and where is the OS/2 version?????????? Do you think, the OS/2 market is

You know this 32-bit thing is a whole lotta FUD in some cases.
fly; what people don't realise is that for some purposes, tightly tuned
lean'mean 16-bit code is still the better choice.

Au contraire! The PowerPC 620 is a 64-bit processor (at least, it has
64-bit registers), and I am already looking forward to optimizing the
Macintosh version of IndyCar Racing II for it. Can you say, 50 FPS full
textures at 640x480? I knew you could :-).

Yo Ervins,
Seeing that you're Team OS/2 and seem to be troubled 'bout this 32-bit
thing, how come your beloved OS's VxDs are still all highly 16-bit, to
the extent that WARP (alogwith with Win 3.1 & WIN/95) is the only OS
that takes an almightily high performance hit on the P6 eh?
'fore asking Papyrus to go 64-bit & develop WARP games howz about asking
your God and cult head IBM to make the first move from 16-->>32?

Not *everyone* is out to7 million users aren't good enough for you? Doom and Galactic
Civilization have been ported over to OS/2 native code. A very loyal
market as well, I might add.
And the things that could be done using the multi-threading and real
multitasking will make some clever game maker a bundle to use the
most technically advanced 32-bit OS going.

But also I saw a Power Mac that was just about the same equipped as

around 4,000(Just this week). So mine would be worth around
1,500-1,700 now. If your willing to shell that kind of money and wait
and extra quarter of the year to get Indycar II then I guess that would
be good for ya.
