More thoughts NASCAR SVGA Frame Rate

Fellow racing fans...IT AINT JUST THE CPU!! When Nascar was first released, ONE LOOK at it running in SVGA was all it took for me to put my DX2/66 up for sale. At the time I upgraded, the P90 was the fastest cpu available. I did a SIDE by SIDE comparison of two P90 systems...both identical (ram, vid card) EXCEPT for MOTHERBOARDS. One system was an 'offshore' combo mboard...(pci and vlb with controller card) the other was an Intel Neptune PCI with controller integrated on mboard. The Intel based system BLEW the offshore AWAY. I run Nascar in hi-res, with all options ON, except for track and grass. (GOTTA have my fans cheering me on from the grandstands) Not only is the frame rate acceptably smooth with 30+ car fields, but my top lap times compare very favorably IN HI-RES with the TOP times posted in this group which seem to be generated in LOW-RES. I would certainly recommend that anyone considering upgrading to a fast Pentium pay CLOSE attention to the motherboard...the newer Intel Zappa is not only CHEAPER than the older Neptune and Triton boards, it has a FASTER chipset. BTW...system ram 16megs, video card Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM. Hope this helps...cheers.
says... a little info: the first pentiums with PCI had VLB beside. Technically, the VLB had many conflicts with the PCI, resulting a decrease in to CPU transfer. Today, there are almost just PCI/ISA-boards on market. But i recommend to all readers here, when you buy a Pentium, it must be a PCI/ISA-board. PCI/VLB's are still around. M. Shavit

Here's something interesting: i'm running Nascar in super-vga with all details on, except for the road textures and 39 cars in the race and it runs just perfect in 20-25 frames per second on a AMD dx4-100 cpu. The motherboard has an UMC-chipset, 8mb ram and a Stealth 64 dram video. On my roommates P75, overclocked at 90 mhz, the same video-controller it sucks with this kind of detail and amount of cars, in other words, my dx4-100 blows his overclocked p75 away!! How the hell is this possible?!?!? btw. both his and mine award-bios are configured as fast as possible, no wait states if possible etc. We both have video-shadowing enabled. This weird ain't it?!? Thanks for any comments because my roommate is pretty upset to see his p75 being blown away by a relatively cheap dx4.... Joeri

Perhaps it's the higher clock rate that your vlb video card is getting... I don't understand it. I just got a NexGen Nx586-90vl and I'm e***d to play NASCAR in 640x480 mode (I can't bring my self to call that SVGA). It should be a jump over my 486dx2-66. All I have to do is get 72 pin simms and I'll be all set! -- Proud owner of the best modem in the world: USRobotics 33.6k v.everything modem. -- *****The WINGMAN*****

Hello I have an Intel Tritton based Pentium-100 and a decent frame rate in SVGA with all detail to max is still fantasy, please explain how you managed this on a 90Mhz Neptune. Also, I said the frame rate was .."acceptably smooth"...I'm sure it will be a lot better when I upgrade to a P5-133, but for now, I find it very playable. Hope this helps...D.

Combo PCI/VLB mo'bo's are something I'd shy away from. The PCI is, I believe, usually bridged off the VLB. Quite why I don't know, but this results in well slower PCI performance. Probably the reason for the difference. Snap. Your post was good! Stuart. Stuart Booth

<Comments about different Pentium systems variation in performance munched> Our good folks here indeed to have a point about Pentiums. There DOES seem to be a VERY great variation in performance between brands, and it is usually some single thing like throughput through the bus, clock timing, memory speed and speed sensitivity, and the like. It isn't like the zillion virtually 486 systems were, at all ?_? One other helpful tip- the last writer mentioned using a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM... welp, I have just seen a system in which said card was replaces by a Stealth Pro 64 VRAM- AND THE VIDEO SPEED ALMOST DOUBLED!!!! it was just short of unbelieveable how much difference it made in NASCAR, Windows, etc, etc... So are you saying that a fast video is a big performance improver with regard to NASCAR?

yes it is... get the fastest pci-card in the market and it'll fly!

I have to disagree here. I have two Stealth 32 cards which are Vlb, and just bought a Stealth 32 PCI, and Landmark says it's only about half as fast! Is that possible? The Vlb cards both do 19 and change, whereas the PCI card only does 13...
