I read this newsgroup in hopes of picking up a tip or to share my experiences with Nascar Racing by Papyrus. Out of the hundreds of articles I read today only 3 of them were *NOT* about "arcade verses sim" or "why can't I edit my own track". I would like to break the trend and send a positive message to the people at Papyrus. Over the past couple of months I have spent some of the happiest hours I ever spent at my computer playing your game. I marvel everyday at the amount of programming and skill it must have taken to put together a game like this. Sure there are some things that need to be fixed and a few improvements to be made but if Papyrus waited until they had the program just the way everybody wanted it before they released it I imagine it would be sometime in late October 2004 before we got to play it. For now, flaws and all, I think it's an excellent game. I'm from an older generation, I guess (35), so I must have a different outlook on things. I watch my two boys (15 and 14) playing their favorite computer games and it seems to me they enjoy finding glitches in the programming so they can beat the game as easily as possible. I've asked them more than once why they don't just say they beat the game and not bother with actually doing it. Personally with a game like NASCAR I prefer getting my speed in the garage rather than a text file. To me that's half the fun. (It's not supposed to be easy.) When I recently made a major breakthrough with my tire pressure and shock setup I felt so good I wanted to celebrate with my pit crew over a couple of beers. (Realizing that *I* was my pit crew I proceeded to do just that.) The rivalry I've built up with Sterling Marlin and the hate I have for Morgan Shepard (the guy actually looks for me) have me watching the clock at work and muttering oaths under my breath. Yesterday after a particually dicy pass I gave Kenny Wallace the finger and *meant* it. Maybe I need to get a life but I think it's just that the game is so well done that if you're not careful (and with the right attitude) you might find yourself looking at GOOP and driving gloves the next time you're in WAL-MART. Thanks again Papyrus for making a game that challenges your mind as well as your button pushing finger. Keep up the good work. Randy Hicks

>Subject: Thank You Papyrus! >Date: 24 May 1995 17:38:03 GMT [Sim vs. arcade note noted and agreed with] This is the proper perspective to consider. You don't even have to go that far into the future to realize how much games and sims will change for us home racing enthusiasts. To witness the difference between ICR 1 and Nascar 1 is quite a difference. When ICR 2 comes out, it will pretty much be Nascar and more. And that will be this year. In 3-5 years, the sim as we know it will again undoubtedly be beyond what we can even imagine right now, and the programmers haven't even dreamt it up yet. Despite loving those Nascar sessions in SVGA mode (And it's very clean and smooth for me) I still prefer ICR, just because of the faster, sleeker style of driving. When ICR 2 comes out, I feel I will be spending even more time racing than I do now, or should even spend on it. Cool, I'm 35 too. While Nascar Racing is still technically just a game, your experience and manner in which you enjoy it MAKES it a sim. I applaud your outlook on this game. Instead of following your sons and looking to find every angle on the thing, and thus ruining it for yourself, you're "living" it. I second that thanks. Nice post Randy. Nice Post. Ralf Southard

I guess I've got you both beat (I'm 41), and while I have nothing against ICR or NASCAR, (I have ICR), I'm a die-hard F1GP/WC fan for the same reasons. Both Papyrus and Microprose have superb products and I'm a little tired of _certain_ people bashing them instead of enjoying them for what the are - today's state-of-the-art racing sims. [Randy Hicks' message deleted] Please, I am going to be sick. Randy! Get out of the house! To those of you who believe otherwise, I do like Papyrus' game. Hell, I still play the old Indy Racing game with the really sucky graphics. bryon -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Algore is made of wood and he weighs the same as a duck. Even though some go to extreme lengths in their complaining I think most of them are so immersed in the alternative reality that the sims provide that they get furious because they are not able to live out that reality more fully because of the fact that the sims are actually on a computer and _not_ of the world they actually live in. We want it to be as real and will be "disappointed" by anything less. Nevertheless it's because of the sims quality that we get so emotional about them. In the future there will be alternative racing seasons to the real series that will be much more extensive than the current ones on the net. Those alternative series on some net will provide for people to drop in for a fee to watch the current race. Infact there will be the drivers, the teams, the spectators and the reporters just like in the real world. But the series will differ in that the spectators themselves in the net series will be able to control the cameras and the replays at the same time that they are chatting with each other and the teams. This net approach will make sure that there'll be a series of every posssible flavour. On the net you can decide when to watch, how to watch and what to watch, as opposed to the current ABC, ESPN, CBS,... deal. Each race will of course be live at a preset time just like in the real world. What's so wrong about this life? Because you're different doesn't mean that you don't have a life. I think being different means that you actually have a genuine life as opposed to a stereotypic one. Don't consider normal as anything but a description of how the gray mass go about any given thing. I am 23. When I come of age at 35 I really hope that I'll still be playing games and racing in some series in some sim. [ Terje Wold Johansen great message deleted ] Terje, you done hit the nail on the head about why some of use are so passionate about the "sim". bryon -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Algore is made of wood and he weighs the same as a duck. And dont forget to thank our great racing directors for organizing these great series! These sims are not half the fun without the possibility to compete against other human drivers... Herbert --

Absolutely right, Herbert, I think about that everytime I am online chatting on the IICC mailing list or lurking on r.a.s or playing ICR at home. I am forver greatful to those who have made all this possible. You know who you are. That's how it should be! I just love to see people of all ages get together to race in some sim series. What this really means is that Papyrus has done an incredible good job in making those sims as real as possible. The sims even convince very mature people like Richard Maddox that doesn't usually turn to games. But this is not a game even though it's great fun. It's very challenging and a really good treat for any racing fan whatever age. It's just wonderful and I wonder how it all will be in five or ten years. IndyCar 5.0!! Yes! I'll probably teach my kids IndyCar before they learn to walk. How will they turn out? ;) Last night I actually dreamt that I had puncture at Detroit. Really made me sweat.
