I played the demo (with the Talladega track) and was getting up to
nearly 210 mph just before turn three. My speeds were between 190
and 195 easily. I've been playing the actual game for the past
couple of days and have been unsuccessful at reaching the
configuration used in the demo. I've yet to go faster than 200.
The car handles fine through out Talladega, but I can't get it up
to the higher speeds. Spoilers are 5.0" for front and 40 deg for
rear. The gears are 9.50 for 1st, 5.50, 3.90, and 3.30. Any
suggestions? Are there any guides, a faq, or a ftp site?

That's because there is a restrictor plate limiting the engine's
horsepower, keeping the speeds down to a safe level. There is a way
to edit the track file to remove this limitation, but I don't have
it handy (I think you change the SPDWY= line from 0 to 1 or 1 to 0, but
I'm not exactly sure).

Good thing you don't have version 1.2, or you'd REALLY be disappointed. If
you're using the sim to simulate racing and have a good time, get 1.2 and use
your skill to offset the difficulty of the AI. Expect 194mph hotlaps at
Talladega.
If you're using the sim just to see how fast you can go without trying any
strategy, then there are a ton of ways to cheat that have been posted here,
such as removing the restrictor plates, shortcutting through the trioval, etc.

I'm not sure how you define shortcutting through the trioval but I've never
been able to get a setup where I can get through the trioval without dropping
down onto the apron without nailing the wall on the way out. The trioval is
just way too sharp there.

: Rich,
: I agree completely about the trioval being too sharp at Talladega. In
: reality one often sees 3 a*** racing through there. However, with the
: computer sim it seems impossible to even race 2 a*** through the trioval.
: I was hoping this would be fixed with the 1.2 patch. Alas it has been
: improved but not fixed. In my opinion, the banks are too easy to
: negotiate while the trioval is too difficult.
: Any comments?
: Gary
As soon as I first got the demo for nascar before the real version came
out, I know that talladega was screwed up. I have been 2 a*** through
the trioval though. Unfortunately, I caused a big wreck doing it :).
Noone was seriously injured though. It seems like most of the other
tracks are pretty realistic but I'm no expert. I wonder why taladega is
messed up. I hope they don't mess up daytona if and when it comes out.

Try inflating the tyres to max pressure, decreases resistance (lateral
grip is not a problem except in the tri-oval, trailing the throttle or
light braking helps to tuck the car in here)
Without cheating by removing the restrictor plate, you won't see much
more than 206 (well, that's my experience anyway) but that's plenty to
win with.

The secret is to lift off the throttle, and maybe just a touch of brakes.
The only time I have real problems is the first lap or two, when the tires are
not warm enough yet.
Works every time!
