GROUND VEHICLE DYNAMICS SHORT COURSE HOLIDAY INN UNIVERSITY NOVEMBER 7-10, 1994 GROUND VEHICLE DYNAMICS in a Distributed Interactive Simulation Environment Sponsored by: The Institute for Simulation and Training University of Central Florida COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the Workshop are to provide students with the theoretical background and practical examples of the dynamic modeling of land vehicles for real-time simulation. Distributed Interactive Simulation issues are also discussed. The fundamental theories of kinematics and dynamics will be reviewed. Practical examples will be used to guide the students through the procedure of dynamic modeling of both wheeled and tracked vehicles. Finally, numerical methods in real-time simulation will be discussed. WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Project Engineers and technical staff of vehicle manufactures' research and engineering laboratories, simulator manufactures' and simulator users who need to do dynamic modeling in the jobs This course is especially oriented to real-time ground vehicle simulation. A basic knowledge of dynamics is desirable. COURSE CONTENT AND SCOPE: This course provides a comprehensive explanation on how to model a dynamic system. The fundamentals of kinematics and dynamics are first reviewed. Coordinate systems and the coordinate conversion techniques will be explained in detail. The single rigid body equations of motion are derived and are later expanded to multiple rigid body systems. The use of symbolic multibody programs to generate equations for real-time solutions is covered. Modeling approaches for multibody programs are then covered. Basic concepts in vehicle dynamics, including modeling approaches for the suspension systems and tires are described. Numerical methods that are used to solve the equations of motion are studied with emphasis on real-time issues. The DIS related issues such as coordinate conversion, dead reckoning, and the development of a new vehicle systems using DIS will be discussed. COURSE OUTLINE: DAY 1 1:00PM - 5:00PM FUNDAMENTALS OF KINEMATICS AND DYNAMICS Newton's law, coordinate systems, coordinate conversions, rotation matrix, Euler's equations, Multi-rigid body systems, and generalized dynamical equations.
