I got the demo today and loaded it on a Pentium and a 386-25DX for comparison.
I was able to get a joystick to work on either machine, as has been reported
by others. The callibration seemed to work, but the car would not respond to
inputs on the track.
The 386 was not really acceptable, even with all the detail off. However, I
do not know if Papyrus is suggesting nothing below a 486. However, even with
the slow response, I found the driving feel supirior to the old Bill Elliot
NASCAR game.
On the Pentium, it ran well with all detail on and I was very impressed with
the visual "feel" of the game. I found the various camera angles very similar
to the views provided by TV coverage cameras on the replays. Also, the in car
view gives you a very good perspective of the track, somthing which the earlier
NASCAR game lacked. I was able to consistantly place the car right up on the
wall upon exiting the turns.
I am anxious to see how damage is handled in the real game. I started
wondering about this when I hit the wall rather hard, skidded nose in hard
against the wall and suffered no apparent damage either visually or in terms
of the car performance. Ignoring the visual, which would be hard to program,
the car should have minimally suffered one or more flat tires and severe
handling problems. To further test the issue, I ran as nearly perpendicular as
possible into the #3 corner wall at between 186 and 188 MPH. The only result
was another long sideways skid and a slow lap time because I had to re-start
from 0 MPH after the skid.

What do you mean?!? All I can get is three views by pressing F10:***pit and
two outside views. Is it possible to change camera views while watching
a replay? I thought I tried that and couldn't get it working.
So, what gives?

I was referring to the camera views available in the replay mode. I agree that
there are only 3 views when you are actually driving (although I have much more
success when I just drive from inside the car).

you have to callibrate the joystick, but you then have to go into "Controls"
(which is right above callibration) and pick the joystick movements for the
various actions listed there. All-in-all a nice setup, I think.
Once I got the joystick running, I was able to consitently turn in 205 - 210
mph laps. I am now even more impressed with the driving feel of the game. I
tried some on-purpose spins and they reacted to steering very realisticly.
My only concern remains with the handling of damage. What the README says and
what the demo provides are nowhere near the same thing.

Maybe you got a different README.TXT --- mine says that the release version
will have realistic crash damage...

I got the same README, I am just wondering why the damage is not recorded in
the demo the same as in the real game... I would think a demo would
demonstrate all aspects...
