Okay, troops, now that I've motivated you (hee hee) let me give you a bit of advice. I've written to Papyrus at their e-mail address (I used to call their BBS but it got expensive) and they acknowledged the fact that there is a market for NASCAR in the simulator world. They also asked me to keep up with the suggestions. Look, guys, I don't think they know exactly how many of us there are. WE need to pressure them, like the folks who got Star Trek into its third season (admittedly, the world lived to regret it). They will respond to you. But we need them to either 1) finally post their acknowledgement of us or 2) tell us they aren't interested. SO E-MAIL THEM TODAY! I don't see this as wasted bandwidth, either. Let's get things going, and before you know it we'll be having Talledega in our living rooms! -- :::> Tony Johns <:::

They also asked me Hello, Have you ever tried Bill Elliots NASCAR Challenge? I don't know what platform you're using, but it was pretty good at filling the NASCAR void on the Amiga. Granted it's not the game that Indy Car is , or even Indianapolis 500, but it _is_ a NASCAR simulator with road courses, tri-ovals, and super-speedways..... I liked it. FAM

For what it's worth, an article in the April CGW ("The Rumor Bag", p. 186) seems to confirm that Papyrus' next project will be a NASCAR simulator... It's just a rumor section, but they're usually right on target. Sean

Why NASCAR? I want to see Papyrus go to work on something more interesting, like perhaps cycle racing. NASCAR is going to be a LOT like IndyCar, graphics and playwise, except the handling on the cars isn't going to be as nice. Of course there are going to be other differences, but 15 different ovals and poor handling vehicles isn't my idea of a fun game. What I'd REALLY like to see is the Micky Thompson offroad season translated into a simulation format. Stadium lights, jumps, independent head bobbing, cars/cycles flying all over the place, announcers, car damage, a Cray Y-MP to run it...

Of >course there are going to be other differences, but 15 different ovals >and poor handling vehicles isn't my idea of a fun game. I understand your point of view. A lot of people consider NASCAR to be relatively boring (because of the oval tracks) or like IndyCar. For us die-hard Winston Cup fans, though, we feel like we should have a quality simulator, not just some Konami Nintendo reject game like Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge. I suppose that's where the difference is -- IndyCar and World Circuit (to some extent, anyway) are realistically modeled and configurable, bringing the player as close to the real racing as one can get behind a computer keypad. And since NASCAR has a completely different set of variables (different car weight, different drivability, different team management, different pit stop problems, etc.), IndyCar and World Circuit just don't satisfy me. Plus, it'd be dang nice to see a full-bodied Winston Cup car in those wonderful Papyrus graphics. :) -- :::> Tony Johns <:::

If you want jumps, play STUNTS. If you want jumps+mud, go to a monster truck rally. ...and was I wrong in assuming that you are not a NASCAR fan? Well, there is a simple remedy for that. If a NASCAR simulator is indeed released, DON'T buy it. You can be rest assured that I won't buy a Bubba-fest MT simulator.

"15 different ovals and poor handling vehicles isn't my idea of a fun game." Which of course denotes that driving NASCAR is a walk in the park. Since English doesn't appear to be your native language, let me state that differently: ...driving NASCAR is a piece of cake (ps this is sarcasm, I can see the confusion on your brow as I type). Seeing how this statement and your reply are completely at odds with each other, what the hell are you responding to? As the game is being made by Papyrus, why would I want to do that? I thought the reason you could change the car setups was so you were better able to drive at the different locales. Isn't that like saying, "IN REFRENCE TO THE MAN WHO SAYS THAT BREATHING G SN'T CHALLENGING, T RY DOING IT WITH A SOCK IN YOUR MOUTH!" "Why?" "BBECAUSE IT'S CHALLANGING!" a caps-lock key, a spell checker, a few grammar lessons, and a monitor so I can see what the *** I'm typing... Try this: Pretend you're a little***roach hopping from key to key. First hop on over to the Caps Lock button. Then take each letter as they come. No cheating with the other hand hitting shift! Or perhaps you've thought it over, and decided that all caps is the proper way to communicate by modem, and just don't understand why so many people use them small letters to talk to each other. Or maybe there's a group for people like you, alt.caps.ON, who have some militant alt.fan.lemurs members teaching you how to subtly infiltrate the internet. About this time Stone, Christopher decided he would contribute this gem to the discussion: Prejudices are such funny things. Here in the western United States, NASCAR is perceived to be quite the "Bubba-fest", as you put it. Yeah, well one sided discussions aren't much fun, I thought I'd put out my opinion on the subject, different as it may be. Of course I realized that the net is full of people who take everything personally and believe that Their Way is The Way, but this group displayed remarkably little of this sort of behavior, especially with F1GP vs. IndyCar being such an easy topic to propagate such behavior. I stand corrected. Would I buy a Mickey Thompson OR Racing simulator with IndyCar's level of realism? In a heartbeat. In addition, I feel that the dynamic nature of the seat of your pants racing style, along with the shorter races, would appeal to a much larger market than a NASCAR simulator would. You are right, I wouldn't buy a NASCAR simulator, as I already own IndyCar and the products would be far to similar to justify fifty more dollars for more of the same. And there are enough people without "brand name loyalty" to NASCAR that feel the same, and they aren't going to be buying NASCAR either. I stand behind my original point: I would rather see Papyrus spend their considerable time and talent producing a GP Cycle racing or MTORR simulator. ( Ps, I understand that a few of you really like NASCAR racing, and all I can say is I'm glad that IndyCar came out first, because if NACR a u n prswscndrn aiga nyrsmltr wudei'bgetspotr:

You just don't get it, do you?

You know, there are decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as tasty.

I don't think that the issue is whether or not NASCAR oval racing is more or less difficult than raod course racing. Having never driven a race car, I can't tell you which is more difficult. I suspect that the skill set required to one or the other successfully is a bit different. For me, I'd rather see Papyrus or Microprose or whoever to work on road course racing (IndyCar road circuits, F1, etc) rather than NASCAR or even IndyCar ovals for one simple reason: I find road courses much more interesting to play or watch (I'm an IndyCar fan, but my interest drops off a bit for the ovals). I refuse to debate which is a "better" form of racing, it's a pointless argument that cannot be won - people's minds are set. I'm not even sure which is truly "better" in the abstract, but I know what I like. Not that I wouldn't mind having the Indianapolis track for ICR...
