Auto Braking Too Slow?

Is anyone making fast times on road courses with auto-braking enabled? It seems to me that it drags you down too much in places where you don't really want much braking. I've disabled auto-breaking but now I'm having trouble adapting to mashing the binders myself. How do the brakes work when you're controlling them with a joystick button? Do they come on full force instantly or do they build as you hold the button down? I ask because I seem to need a lot more braking distance without auto-braking. Or maybe it just seems that way...
