Well, I built a new computer(thanks to a generous fellow sim racer). Since the
mobo doesn't have any ISA slots, I can't use my PDPL gamecard. The USB wheel I
have doesn't have split-axis, so that makes it difficult to drive. I tried
using my SBLive's gameport to run my TSW wheel. Couldn't find(or create) a
config that worked right. Either the config didn't show both pedals, or the
calibrate screen kept jumping around. This is a winXP system, and I'm sure I'm
just not used to XP yet. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Getting a TSW wheel working under Windows XP
EldredP built a new PC without ISA slots and could not get his TSW wheel working via the SBLive gameport under XP. Members explained XP's limited gameport support, suggesting USB upgrades, lower-resistance pots, Windows 2000 or dual-booting 98SE, and he got a Sidewinder wheel working in split-axis mode via its software. An anonymous troll repeatedly insulted him.

Eldred, which verson of Direct X are you using? Try DX 9, or reinstall it.

It was DX9, loaded when I installed N2k3.

Make sure you disable / enable "poll with interrupts enabled" in the

jitters and lots of resolution, better than with win98se). Had to get a driver
that allows for multiple axes and compound buttons from:
http://www.massey.ac.nz/~jcmarsha/Wheel/
(select "drivers" from menu)
Only problem is that they are available for win98 and win2000... don't know if
the win2k registry change will work with XP (any win200/XP experts out there?).
You may not need the extra buttons for the TSW, but it also gives 2, 3, and 4
axis controllers for the gameport (dual, split axis, and triple if you have a
clutch).

I had the same problem upgrading a friend's computer to XP because he
had a TSW wheel. Its been a little while, but IIRC particular models
of the TSW do not work well under XP with the gameport. I think the 2
options are an upgrade from TSW, or a gameport-USB converter.

is left in XP, is as stated -> very very limited, even the Microsoft wheels
& joysticks that MS branded don't work right, or fully supported anymore (on
the wheels it is impossible if not just near impossible to get separate
pedals/axis and or the Force Feedback to work under XP...)
But, as far as TSW goes, your best solution is to get the (1 or 2 part
solution) upgrade/fix directly from Thomaswheel, or atleast get the same
exact components elsewhere... Their (1) gameport to USB converter is the
best one out there (they do not MFG it) and (2) then many wheels have to
have the POTs (potentiometers that the wheel and pedals use to detect/relay
movement or input) changed to ones that are compatable with the signals that
the USB device expects. as far as I have read on the boards over the last
couple years, you can even send in the wheels and they will do the "fixes"
for a small fee, IIRC?

Not a lot of computers in academic or corporate environments deal with
gaming stuff. At least, not "in the open". Many companies run programs
to sniff out and remove games from computers on their networks.
When I was in the office envirnment, my support guys knew a ton of
stuff about network protocols, security, doing massive upgrades to a
few hundred computers at a go, and a whole bunch of other stuff. They
knew diddley about gameports, or whether ATI was better than nVidia at
rendering GPL or NR2K3.

Bottom line, Eldred: USB is a better "game port" than the old game port
(consumes fewer resources; less lag). Yer PDPI excepted.

Well, looks like I'll have to go the TSW USB upgrade route. If I send the unit
back for them to do, them I'm out until I get it back. Maybe I'll see how hard
the kit is to install myself.
My old computer can't use USB(win98se), so I never looked at it before.

Hehe, same here. I dug out the last motherboard with ISA slots, but it
is limited to 1.4 ghz celery. PDPI and windows 98, and a thriller 3d
card for GPL. On the original tracks, snice the new ones are too heavy
on the graphics card, hehe.
The PDPI card is the best I have yet tried, btw. Fully adjustable inputs
and stuff. Loved it.

It *has* USB ports, but they've never worked consistently. Plugging in a USB
scanner or media reader would lock up the system(requiring a reset of the
Edison interface). Plugging in a USB key would work *sometimes*. My Microsoft
USB stick doesn't work with it anymore. I figured the problems were because of
how 98se handled(or didn't) USB ports...

Go here, and see if you can get it -

Install the software, plug in the wheel, then launch the software and you
can make it split or combined axis within the software.
I have the same usb MS FF wheel, on XP Pro, running as split axis just fine.

Eldred.......
TWO simple words... DUAL BOOT
I run both Win98se and WinXP
All my racing is done on the Win98se partition
Everything else is done in XP.
Food for thought

I have a dual boot XP/Win98 system but I can honestly say I
haven't needed to use Win98 for over two years. Even Doom3 works
in XP if you Google around a little. I haven't tried personally
though, and I don't run any old games any more which might be
awkward under XP.

Of course it works, its supposed to work under XP. Its tough to get it
working under Win9X, unless that is waht you meant and just got it backwards

You're right. Complete brain to finger interface failure.

Make sure you have all the latest updates/drivers for your peripherals.
I have been running XP since Dec 01, it has been very stable for me.

Yes. Actually I could say that my Win98se is a dedicated "sim" os
.
On 98 I run - GPL, NR2003/TA, GTR2002, GTR-Demo, LFS, etc.
On XP I run - any other games - Doom3, Far-Cry, etc.
I don't use Win98 for anything else EXCEPT sim-racing.
That does afford me a nice "stable, reliable, no-driver-issues" sim-racing
system. Don't really ever have to worry about some new game that
requires new driver version that does not work with GPL and creates
some new problems that I gotta get sorted out before the next league race!
LOL
When I race... I reboot from XP to 98 and everything works as always!
"Start your engines" and go ;)
