Notable threadGTR public demo released

Uwe Schurkamp posted a mirror for SimBin's official GTR demo, and members shared download links. Reactions were mixed: David G Fisher found the cars understeered and felt boring, while Mitch_A and Steve Simpson praised the handling and immersion. The demo's StarForce notice, setup tweaks and nausea from head movement were also discussed.

Hi guys, here's a direct mirror link in case you cannot get to the main gtr page: http://www.sanchodezign.de/gtr/demo/GTR_DEMO.exe Download is progressing nicely at 300kb/sec, I'll put the copy up on Gnutella in 15 mins or so. That's my experience with that mirror too, file size: 141Mb (Not the expected 220Mb) Downloading from another mirror now... Alan.

I got it and it was 390kb Now trying again...coming in at 1.3mb/sec... bit slow :)

Got it. Playin' it. Got some problems. Have auto-shift and auto-clutch turned on. Upshifts fine but won't downshift. Tough to get going out of a hairpin in 6th gear. AI needs work. Other drivers are somewhat aggressive if they are in front of you. When you pass them they just hang back unless you come to almost a stop. Not very compettitive. I may be doing something wrong, but I don't think so. Hope the final version is better, been waiting a long time "Uwe Schrkamp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I know it's in there. In fact GTR would not run on my machine until I used the enclosed Starforce remover. After I removed Starforce, GTR ran great on my machine. I'm thinking the Starforce notice might be a prelude to the final, full version. I had the same experience. No Starforce installed. Alanb

My install didn't include SF either, despite this in the readme: "If you are concerned about Star Force protection drivers remaining on your system after you uninstall GTR Demo, you may wish to use SFCLEAN.EXE in Support folder in the game root. Note, if you do run the uninstall utility for the drivers, when you launch the protected game again, the drivers will be reinstalled. For more information regarding StarForce protection please visit StarForce Technologies International website (http://www.star-force.com)" (The SFCLEAN.EXE file is indeed in the Support folder, but I didn't run it, honest!) Increased powerside lock should enable you to kick the rear end out with the throttle (certainly w. the Lister), but a trailing throttle would result in front end push, i.e., the typical beginners' wobbly corner-entry understeer. You cant compare everything to F1 cars Dave ;) I dont think they drive bad at all. Then again as slow as I am everything handles good :) Understeer hasnt been a problem unless Im over driving the corner. The groove is REALLY a groove, dont get out of it. This aint NR2003 so you may as well quit trying to compare em. One thing Ive found is you cant dive bomb the corners nearly as much. This sim lends itself much more to the "In slow Out fast" saying used so often in real life and ignored so universally in NR2003. Not having yet tried GTR demo (dl but no time to play yet) I can only comment on why "in slow out fast" may not be the case for NR2003 - and NASCAR in general - banking. I have a dirt track Camaro, and you can really overdrive into the corner and let the banking save you - you can't do that on a flat track - you just sliddddddddddddddde or spin. I'm still looking for a good book/website/video that discusses racing lines WITH banking. It seems every book I read starts with "assuming no banking" and then shows the proper line for a flat corner... I know the basic idea is still the same, but some tracks (Bristol) have such steep banking that the "traditional" line through the corner is probably totally wrong. Ray
Ran it again last night night. What I found is that every car on my block can handle those 60mph corners a lot better than the demo car. It's a very easy, slow, boring drive compared to not only the F1 cars (not even close), but also the Cup boats and TA cars in N2003, and even the GPL cars. There's no razor's edge. Braking is dull. No punch when you accelerate. Even a chicane can be fun if you are driving a car that you keep on the edge all the way through. This car feels like it's in mud. No adrenaline rush at all. You'll never have understeer if you go slow enough, but what a boring way to spend my sim time. :-) I want to drive a car that challenges me to dance on the edge and go as fast as possible, not one who's major challenge is to make sure I don't push too hard on 60mph turns. :-( Anyone can do that. It may be though that with the sim physics, and a different car (550?), on a different track, that it will feel a lot more ferocious. I doubt it though. Schumacher said recently, "I like precise cars," he says. "I don't like these heavy things. They are so slow, and I think they are going too slow for me. I try always to do more than they can do." I feel exactly the same towards any sim cars that are boring to drive. Im really missing the point your trying to make Dave. F1C while OK had serious physics issues. TA Mod is nothing more than a 6 speed Nascar sim on RC's yet you keep finding ways to put down GTR which far surpasses both the titles you mention by leaps and bounds (OK graphics, physics, multi TBD). GTR feels like a real car, maybe thats why its boring? It sure takes a bunch of work to make a pass, requires utmost precision to drive fast yet is more forgiving (like a real car) than either title you say is better (or less boring). A bunch a people on this same NG said how bad GPL was when the demo was released also so Im taking it with a grain of salt and am happily waiting for the full release. You've lost the plot, Dave. If you find the GTR press demo too easy in simulation mode then you're not pushing the limits. I can understand how you can prefer F1 cars as they are fearsome combination of power:weight & handling (not conducive to good racing though) but how you can possibly prefer the TA stuff is completely beyond me.

Well it's hardly as if Dave is a renowned Papy fanboy... Whilst I am sure someone will prove it is not conclusive proof of anything the TA replays of my own driving look pretty realistic compared with R/L racers. Replays of GTR just look somehow wrong - the cars don't seem to move correctly, especially when they twitch. As if somehow it is just too exaggerated. Watching an R/L video and the car will twitch subtely whilst the driver is working inside in the car. It just looks like teh GTR replays as if in certain circumstances there is way too much grip and lack of suspension. Despite the bobbing up & down. Personally I find the TA still too Nascar like and have hardly touched it for many months, yet I find it closer to reality than GTR. RBR driving feel and replays manage to convey the feel of a sliding car on gravel superbly. However, I get the same feeling on tarmac as GTR. It just doesn't look right on the replays as if there are some wheels at 90 degrees in the middle of the car that come into play under certain conditions. This isn't to say I don't feel GTR is any good just that there is a certain something that doesn't feel right (for me at least). Cheers Tony

The car GTR car skips and twitches instead of slides. One other thing which is making it difficult for me to like the demo is that I get nauseous after about 20 minutes of driving. It might be the way the car bobs up and down constantly. I'll have to somehow find a view that eliminates that. I get the same nauseous feeling with first person shooters, and in the past when frame rates were too low in a driving sim. -- David G Fisher

There should be a couple of sliders that you can lower that should help your queasyness. Look for world view or head movement..something in that order. dh

They don't stop the bobbing up & down thought AFAIK. It is a tough one to simulate but stare at the screen and bob your head and your eyes will compensate for the movement. In fact you can move your head quite significantly but still remain focused on a given point. It seems to be a preference thing - in which case Simbin would be advised to provide an option to reduce it. Personally instead of feeling like a stiff performance car feeling every bump if feels like the dampers were forgotten... Back in the old days I had an Avenger with Spax adjustable dampers (the rally car...). I adjusted them up to get a bit of rally oversteer (as you do) so it was a pretty firm and bumpy ride along some rough farm tracks ("whites" for those in the know). The demise of the car came when my navigator borrowed the car and stuck it in a ditch. We retrieved it and took off anything decent including the rear dampers and towed it to the breakers yard. GTR feels like the Avenger after we took the stiff dampers off completely... All IMHO of course. Cheers Tony
But you don't bob up and down - the car (cockpit) does but the viewpoint remains fairly fixed which simulates the fact that your eyes remain focused. That's one of the things I like most about LFS/F1C/GTR and the thing I miss most when I'm playing N2003. I used to think the bumps were overdone in the demo but then I tried some of the setups that the aliens use and suddenly the track got a whole lot smoother.

My point (badly put I know) was that if you physically bob up and down as if a car was jiggling on bumps that you eyes compensate. Therefore the effect of bobbing portrayed by GTR feels wrong (to me anyway) as when in a car the car remains relatively fixed to you whilst the world outside moves around but your eyes compensate. Hence seeing things bobbling around seem a bit wrong.

Here's an experiment. At your PC desk, start bobbing up and down....Notice how things in the distance don't really appear to be moving, yet things that are close to you are moving noticeably. By the way, I turn off all of the things like g-force simulation and world movement in the GTR demo since they seem like a bit of a gimmick to me.

I dont even notice it anymore. Head movement really contributes to the immersion factor and it also gives me great feedback on what the car is doing. Going back to NR2003 is now a very sterile experience. Low Framerate isnt really an acceptable option IMO. One word..
