What must I add to the core.ini file to correct the replay error
message when having 1gb of ram installed? Is there a known issue with
R9800pro/CAT 3.7 drivers? I can play in software mode (after limiting
available ram to 512mb) but not D3D, this in Win98. I've had a couple
of games not detect I have a D3D primary card in Win98 but they were
fine in XP so maybe it's the same issue and I should install GPL to
XP.

In the core.ini you add the following:
[ Replay ]
ReplayMemoryOverride = 131072
The value is in Kb, so increase it if you want gpl to use more, decrease
it if you want to use less (unlikely with 1Gb RAM).
Windows 98 has a separate issue where it can only cache up to 512Mb RAM
and any extra will actually cause a noticeable performance drop
apparently.
I believe the way round this is to add the following line to your
system.ini:
[vcache]
MaxFileCache=524288
I've never had more than 512Mb though so I've never used it myself, and I
think it limits win98 to 512Mb, making the extra RAM useless unless you
have a dual boot system with another OS (win2k/XP etc) that can use the
extra RAM.

Done. Thx.
I already have my Vcache limited so it is not an issue. And Win98 can
use more than 512mb, it's not wasted. That setting just stops Vcache
from stealing all of your ram when you have more than 512mb installed.
Now to get to the bottom of the R9800pro issue.

Thanks for clearing that up, I wasn't sure having never had that
combination myself ;-)

Can't help with that, I can only suggest a search on racesimcentral if you
haven't done so already.
gpl runs fine on XP, but you may have problems with corrupted sound.
Since gpl has no registry hooks, you can just try copying the entire
sierra folder and running gpl.exe from WinXP to see if you prefer it. You
could just run the original install, but you'd probably have to
re-calibrate your controller in gpl each time you swapped OS's.

Just for openeners, what kind of motherboard do you have? Is it fairly
new or as old as your OS. I have win98se...as most of the regulars here
know, but after getting a R9800np, I had some programs that had graphic
glitches and my desktop was a mess. Little straggly lines left over
whenever I moved an icon or opened a window..and the desktop text was
truncated which made it very difficult to read quickly.
After getting a relatively modern motherboard(Abit N7 with the nforce2
chipset...ironically by Nvidia), all those graphic problems went away.
Others here and on racesim central will also verify that older motherboards
do not work well with the last two generations of Radi.(Radeons?)

NP. I was just given this info in another group. Win98 can use up to
1gb of ram with no issues. After 1gb it may be a problem. Read this
url.

I'll solve it, thx.

That's a possibility as it is an Asus P4B533 (845E), but I can run
other games with no issues and my desktop is fine. In fact I just
installed Nascar Thunder 2004 with no problems. I do have XP too
though so will try it there instead, thx.

And if in trouble even after following all advice in the above article
there's the GPL FAQ:

I
dloaded the all-in-one patch and applied it. Now GPL runs perfectly.
Much thx. I only installed three patches and the all-in-one installs
five various patches. Woohoo.

Damn, I spoke too soon. I played it D3D mode fine after applying the
all in one patch but then I went and installed a car pack and fired it
up and got the same problem as before. The game never starts up when I
select D3D mode and if I bring up task manager it shows "Papyrus
Window failed to respond". I can play it in OpenGL fine but there are
a couple of graphics glitches in that mode. Weird.

Remember to come back and ask us for help when your extra memory system
runs slower......

Over 512mb is a problem if you don't limit the Vcache to 512mb or
less.

p.s. I run Win98, XP and Linux with 1gb of ram and see no evidenc of
what you are saying.

5 years of complaints about folks adding extra ram. Yes it can be done,
yes windows98 can access more than 512 and yes you can even get your
original performance if you know how to handle the vcache setting, but if
you don't, as probably 99% of computer users don't, then you slog down your
system. So better to warn the novice away rather than try to explain ini's
and vcaches etc.
