Just got off the phone with GT Interactive - my copy of Driver for the PC was unable to locate the CDROM even though it was able to install OK from it. Turns out they're using a copy protection scheme that is incompatible with CD writers (mine's a Yamaha CRW4416s). The tech's best suggestion was that I go out and *buy* a plain vanilla CD drive to run the game from or take the game back for a refund. To add weight to GT's position he suggested that this copy protection scheme is up-and-coming and that most games yet to be published will be using this scheme. Although I can understand why they may not want CDRW users burning copies of their CD, this seems like a poor idea if it excludes us from actually using the game we've paid our money for (short of shelling out for a redundant CD drive just to play GT interactive games). If the packaging had stated that it will not work with a CDRW I could have passed on the game before wasting my time & money. So ... has anyone else tripped up over this? Did you find a way round it? (Has this been FAQ'ed to death already?) Is this protection scheme a fine idea & I'm just in a disgruntled minority? Your comments please James -- jbevan at actual dot com New ISP coming soon

It looks like we're headed back into copy protection mess we used to have with floppy disks - companies using wierd, unreliable formats, crackers figuring out how to get around them, and the customer left in the middle with flaky products they've paid good money for. I still remember having to hand-tune my Apple ][ floppy drive's pot on the rear of its circuit board just to get it to read a company's disks, then tuning it back to normal, etc, etc. It seems the only thing that has given us a breather in this battle is the time gap between the acceptance of CD-ROMs and the more recent introduction of cheap CR-RW drives. ...207 James Bevan <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:7tt1iv$t64$[email hidden]... > Just got off the phone with GT Interactive - my copy of Driver for the > PC was unable to locate the CDROM even though it was able to install > OK from it. > > Turns out they're using a copy protection scheme that is incompatible > with CD writers (mine's a Yamaha CRW4416s).
