The older driver in that picture was the "Pampas Bull", Jos Froilan
Gonzalez, compatriot and good friend of Juan Fangio. His forearms were
bigger than most current drivers' hat sizes... He was the driver for
Ferrari's very first GP victory, the British GP at Silverstone in 1951.

Got to share this one with ya.
Back about twenty five years ago in ROAD AND TRACK magazine, they
had a PARTING SHOT in the back. It is a comical "made up" dialogue of
a real photograph.
In it they featured several of the "THEN" Formula One drivers
along with a lone Formula One drive of the late forties or early
fifties (I can't remember his name) but it seems he was Italian.
He was a lot "beefier" compared the the "SKIN AND BONE" look of
the drivers of today. If you have ever looked at photographs of the
earlier eras the drivers were in fact a lot "heftier".
Anyway, it show the older driver standing along side a F1 car
with the TREMENDOUSLY WIDE rear tires of the day, and the group of
"present day" drivers surrounding the entire scene.
The caption was ....
"Gee whiz, in MY day the DRIVERS were fat, and the TIRES were
skinny!"
Yeah, baby!
I have a lovely piccy of Mr. Gonzalez powering his red machine up through
Eau Rouge, and the second-place car is just exiting La Source.
Man....what I wouldn't give for a 1950s "overlay" to GPL!
