Re: GPL - Monza Banking

The film Grand Prix and requests for the Monza banking

After watching the 1966 film Grand Prix, a poster asked for a GPL conversion of the Monza banking, and others noted that no track editor existed to build it. The thread then discussed which circuits appear in the film, such as Brands Hatch and Clermont-Ferrand, and the Monaco harbour crash. It ended with the real stories of Alberto Ascari and Paul Hawkins going into the harbour.

This has been suggested many times, unfortunately no-one has the track editor to do it, except maybe the mysterious "Dave Noonan". Also it may not even be possible due to the effective figure of eight configuration. - Michael
Well they only could fit in a couple of races... Perhaps it would have been better if they skipped the 'story' part and only showed all the races, but then it wouldn't be a movie anymore... I think the choice of tracks was superb. The races at Spa, Zandvoort, Silverstone and Monza were fantastic to watch. By the way, I noticed to late that the movie was on tv a couple of weeks ago, so I missed the first part of the movie. I have the movie on tape from the part where they race on Spa. Can anyone tell me which races are in the movie besides Spa, Zandvoort, Silverstone and Monza? Andre On 20 Oct 1999 07:30:27 GMT, [email hidden] (Schlomo4) wrote:

There has been some discussion about this before. I thought it was Silverstone, but I never was sure about this. So it was Brands after all... Andre On Wed, 20 Oct 1999 11:52:13 +0100, "Mike West" <[email hidden]> wrote:

I haven't duplicated that (I think there is a virtual wall there, so you can't even if you can clear the fence), but i've duplicated Scott Stoddard's (his teammate) excursion into the inside wall many times :) > > -- > " Why bother..." - R. Crumb - -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying

I've taken my car across the bridge before the last turn at silverstone with traffic below & never been hit. 'Course I could've just gotten lucky, but if you knew me, you would know I don't get lucky very often! Warlock!
This is based on the observation of somebody, who drove onto the bridge of Silverstone during a race. The AI cars running under the bridge tried to dodge him. (I haven't tried this little experiment, but I think it is true). *BUT*, running over an object in the same track section as the AI is a different story than actually being in a totally different track section than the AI (as you were at the crossing in Monza). I don't believe that the AI could 'see' you there. So I'm very optimistic, that a 'banked Monza' *can be done* in GPL. BTW, I've just started writing an editor for *.trk files (which contain the physical layout of a track) just out of interest. If somebody had the knowledge of creating a track.3do file (which seems to be a *** thing) out of a *.trk file, that would be a *big* step towards a working track editor. Sadly, all track editor projects seem to be dead. I only know two sites, which contain infos about track editing and both weren't updated for months: Paul Hoad's Track Editor Project and Phil Flack's GPL File Formats. Does anybody know more sites with good infos about that? Peter (hoping a GPL track editor will become reality - sooner or later...) Vienna, Austria

No, Monza didn't have or use the banking in 1937, only a natural banking. Stephen Colbourne wrote:

A dive into the harbour at Monca? That does sound spectacular. Can anyone please describe a little bit what happened? Which driver was it, which car, did he survive? Andre On Thu, 21 Oct 1999 00:36:05 +0100, "Mark Seery"

Ten years later Paul Hawkins repeated the feat in his Lotus. In the movie, it was James Garner's character, Pete Aron. The entire Monaco opening is absolutely spectacular, by the way. Aron had a faulty transmission that caused him to slow after the tunnel resulting in a collision with his teammate, Scott Stoddard. Aron winds up in the drink and Stoddard climbs the hillside and flips, getting seriously injured. The team blames Aron and sacks him. That's the reason for the animosity between Aron and Stoddard throughout the film (not to mention the fact that Aron starts sleeping with Stoddard's wife ;-) ). And, no, you can't re-created this in GPL. I had a similar accident once and as I was hurtling towards the Mediterannean, I hit an invisible force-field that kept me dry. Bummer. This race was was just shown on Speedvision's "Legends of Motorsport" a couple of weeks ago (my cable TV supplier just added Speedvision in September!). They didn't get the actual off on film, but they did show the aftermath a few seconds later. Matt... 1) Due to the "country road" nature of the circuit it was considered imprudent to have unskilled drivers "race" on it because 2) If an accident occurred, getting an ambulance to the location then the injured party to hospital could have taken excessive time. Well, if there were concerns about letting the actors drive around the whole Nordschleife in their fake cars or fit a camera to a real driver's car (that went wrong a couple of years ago when the camera fell off, causing crashes) there would still have been the option of taking spectacular pictures of the real drivers by using road-side cameras. For showing the actors driving, a camera mounted in the center of the Suedkurve would have been perfect. Spa and the Ring are both in the mountains, far away from major airports or cities. Some parts of the Ring are in the woods (eg. Kesselchen) , but the most interesting sections can be reached easily even with trucks. And the pictures from above, taken by Zeppelin, airplane or helicopter, used to be interesting in the 1930s, 1950s and 1990s. I just can't understand why Frankenheimer did not include it in the movie. -- Matthias Flatt
Perhaps the directors of the circuit wanted too much in payment?

I always though that this part of the movie was really lame - I mean, Aaaron is being LAPPED by his TEAMMATE, and he won't let him past? Of course his team fired him - who wouldn't? And some mechanic in the movie makes the asinine comment "Pete still has a chance to win". Right. 1 lap down at Monaco, where passing is impossible, the race almost over, and he still has a chance to win. Sure, maybe meteors will fall on all the other cars and put them out of the race :). Apart from that, a great movie :). Chris > > >A dive into the harbour at Monca? That does sound spectacular. Can > > >anyone please describe a little bit what happened? Apparently fours days after his dip, he borrowed a 3 litre ferrari sports car at Monza to test his nerve, but on the third lap he struck the edge of the track and rolled over, and died shortly after before he could get to a hospital. It's amazing how many of the greatest drivers died racing... speedracer > I always though that this part of the movie was really lame - I mean, Aaaron > is being LAPPED by his TEAMMATE, and he won't let him past? I believe he's referring to Alberto Ascari. Mark

There were some uncanny coincidences between (Antonio) his father's death and his own.The elder Ascari had been killed on the 26th of the month, The same day that son died. Each was 36 years old at time of death. Both drivers had been killed just four days after surviving horific accidents and both occured at the exit of fast left hand corners. In neither case was there a firm reason why they went off the track. Alberto Ascari was killed whilst doing an impromptu drive at a test session at Monza. He was not due to drive that day but went To the track to see how testing was going with his partner Eugenio Castelotti, with whom he was to share a works Ferrari sportscar in a 100Km race the following weekend. Castelotti Was astonished when Ascari offered to drive, even though he was suffering terribly with a broken nose, the after effect of his enforced swim in the Med. This astonishment was compounded when Ascari used Castelotti's helmet. This was always a taboo thing to do with Alberto, who only ever wore his "lucky" light blue one. Mark

You only need to get off the track to the right after the pits. ;-) Banking is still there. Jens <snip> --------------------------------------------- Remove "NOSPAM" before using my email-address

This is my favorite way through the chicane. ;-) Jens BTW: I need some training at Monaco >I haven't duplicated that (I think there is a virtual wall there, so you can't >even if you can clear the fence), but i've duplicated Scott Stoddard's (his >teammate) excursion into the inside wall many times :) --------------------------------------------- Remove "NOSPAM" before using my email-address
