NVIDIA cards versus Voodoo for GPL

Posters debated whether a TNT2 or Voodoo3 was better for GPL. Voodoo owners favoured native Glide support, while many reported a steady 36 fps on TNT2 and GeForce cards with the OpenGL patch and registry tweaks. Papyrus's Grant Reeve noted Athlon systems needed updated AMD AGP drivers, and one frustrated user gave up and criticised the lack of Direct3D support.

The V3 is the better card for GPL due to the glide support, other cards have to use an OpenGL patch which is'nt as well optimised. I'm running the Annilhilator Pro and the BETA2 OpenGL patch and the game locks my computer whenever I click the green light to enter a race. What combination of drivers and patches are you using to get it to work - I really want to play GPL but I'm not taking my GEFORCE card out to do it. The needs of the many outweight the needs of the few (or the one). "Jon Andersen" <[email hidden]> wrote:

I am thinking of buying a new graphic card. What is the quality like with NVidia card with the reg change compared with the Voodoo? Would TNT2 be enough for 36fps in GPL on a C300A or a V3-2000 would be better?

Not true. My nVidia RIVA TNT1 card works perfectly well with GPL using the OpenGL (admittedly beta - but very stable) drivers. > gpl only works with 3dfx, so tnt2 is no option
But still for GPL a V3 is better as a TNT2... (for other games it might be different.. --Sjon > Not true. My nVidia RIVA TNT1 card works perfectly well with GPL using the > OpenGL (admittedly beta - but very stable) drivers.

> gpl only works with 3dfx, so tnt2 is no option Wrong. There is an OpenGL patch. I use this patch to be able to play GPL using my Geforce. Geforce + OpenGL patch outperforms my 2 Voodoo 2 in SLI modus. The only advantage I can see using Voodoo2 SLI is that the mirrors look better. But FPS is higher with the Geforce + OpenGL patch. Jon

Not true, I've just got a new pc which came with an Nvidia TNT2 and with the OpenGL patch and registry fix it works fine. 36fps most everywhere except the start, all forward details on. Hi! I've just chosen my card and the card I had was a CL TNT which I liked alot, but in GPL the mirrorproblem is not good when racing online. I have just tried a CL TNT2 Ultra and a CL Geforce DDR and I was pretty impressed by the performance of the Ultra, but I chose the Geforce as it was just powerful enough for 1024x768 with all graphics on and 19 AI cars in GPL with my C300A OC to 504Mhz. But the prize is another story the Geforce was terrible expensive, but If your looking for higher resolutions in GPL which I think is better for the eyes then wait for the Voodoo 5 card which are just around the corner. Regards, Hans-Otto It's not enough to think twice these days when choosing a card...better think 5 or 6 times :-). Maybe you should wait for the NV10 <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:87j3k9$50p$[email hidden]... > I am thinking of buying a new graphic card. What kind of rig do you have? With all of the tweaks here that I have seen, I can't get it past 30.XX fps (OpenGL, no detail, 640x480, 19 cars, no lighting, cars in mirrors only). I must be missing something. Any help would be appreciated. P3 500, 128MB Viper 770 (156, 131) 3.53 drivers (3.68 seemed to run slower for me) SB Live Value Windows95 With my old Celeron 266 and a Stealth II I could get 5 cars with all details at 36fps. I'm wondering if I put in the Stealth II card, what kind of numbers I would pull. Has anybody tried? Thanks, Keith Kramer Peter Hooper wrote:

you must have something wrong somewhere, I,ve got a dell p3-450 dell tnt2 std, 128 meg ram. Can run at 1600x1200 training mode 36fps 1152x864 online 36fps most details on, slider halfway, car and track in mirrors Ron Ashenden In article <[email hidden]>, Keith Kramer <[email hidden]> wrote:

My Voodoo3 3000 and Athlon 800 performs 36 fps with 1280 x 1024, even at the tail of 19 AIs. Of course, TNT2 or GeForce are well cards, but not for auto simmers. WSC is making with Glide support. Though, only one exception may become GP3, no announcement about 3D API. Y.Minami

I've got a TNT2 I run 19 AI cars in 10??x768 @36fps. All graphics on except the mirrors which are cars only (no big deal as you can still ID the car and driver). It seems to run OK with 1280x1024 too at about 30fps. Kev Yoshi Minami wrote:

Sunday night, I unstalled GPL, defragged the drive and swap file and reinstalled. I then changed the MipFiltering value from 4 to 1, which was the key to obtaining 36 fps. I now get a jerky 36 fps around the track in resolutions from 640x480 to 1024x768. I will ponder the issue further to see if what other changes might be made. Keith Kramer wrote:

GPL 1.2 Nvidida detonator 3.68 reference driver I also experieced sudden lockups for a while. After changing the speed of the AGP port in BIOS, from 2/3 of the system bus, to 1/1, the lockup seems to have vanished. Strange, but true. Being a Voodoo1 racer on my last pc and a TNT2 racer on my curent machine. I would have to ask, "What is the purpose of the new computer?" If the purpose of the new computer is to race GPL, and get better and this being your primary use for the computer, then Voodoo is the way to go. If you are getting a new computer and are needing to do things other than play games, as in work on a Photoshop, AutoCAD, or any other graphic intensive, or if you need the ability to do 3D graphics in 32 bit color, then Nvidia is a better choice. The nice thing about the Nvidia choice is, even if you do not care for the GPL performance, you can always get a Voodoo2 card and add it on. SLG (The above is an OVER generalization and may not always be true!) "NV10" <[email hidden]> wrote: >I am thinking of buying a new graphic card. So could I actually get a Voodoo card and run it alongside the NVIDIA TNT2 in my system now?? Peter Hooper Steve Garrotto <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I use a lowly TNT (not 2) and get about 24 FPS incar, or 36 frames behibdview (wich i mostly run in anyway..... Sudesh

I just put together a new Athlon based PC with a GeForce DDR last week, and GPL (or any game at all that tried to use 3D) would crash, until I installed the latest AMD AGP drivers. Grant.
>So could I actually get a Voodoo card and run it alongside the NVIDIA TNT2 >in my system now?? Sort of... The Voodoo 1 and Voodoo 2 chipsets were strictly 3D only, and installed alongside an existing graphics adapter. A V1/V2 based card (or better still, a pair of V2s) will, quite happily co-exist with a TNT card. If you want a Voodoo 3 however, I'm afraid you've got a difficult choice to make... -- JG

nope - using a straight-up Gateway PC with INTEL motherboard/cpu I've given up on GPL and went back to SCGT and Viper. Maybe someday Sierra will learn that the world progresses even if their software doesn't. Making a non-D3D game was purely insane - even 2 years ago when Voodoo/3dfx "was" a standard. They should have just made GPL a pack-in title for people who bought voodoo cards or rendition cards if that is all they planned on supporting. On Tue, 08 Feb 2000 01:56:18 GMT, Grant Reeve

I can understand your frustration. To have to give up on a quality sim like GPL for the sake of hardware and/or drivers is a real shame. However, it does point to a few things to bear in mind: it's usually a good idea to buy hardware that supports the software you intend to use, not the other way round. It's also usually not a good idea to be an early adopter of new hardware. Drivers can sometimes take some time to mature and until they do, the potential for problems/incompatabilities is high. S.
Thanks Johnathon, I am more than happy with my TNT2 but wouldn't mind trying out a Voodoo to see the difference it makes for GPL. I might just nip down to EB befroe the weeks out and pick up a Voodoo 2 card to try it out. It shouldn't*** anything up in my system should it?? Well I can't blame Papy for a program they wrote 2 years ago and expect them to be compatible with every new piece of technology - if only they had developed for the D3D standard they would have been compatible as long as Windows and DirectX were around - which is almost certainly going to be longer than 3dfx
