First Grand Prix 3 video clip reactions
A German magazine's GP3 trailer video prompted debate. Some thought it looked great, while others criticised the steering wheel turning without driver arms, bumper-car contact without damage and limited suspension travel, though Pez noted all driving aids were on. A 30 June release date was mentioned.

Fair enough - too used to GPL. :-)
I do hope though that the final version has an option to enable driver
hands. It looks rather spooky at the moment, with some 'ethereal force'
turning the wheel... ;-)

It looks good except when the wheel is at 180 deg, it then looks odd

And I agree with your opinion on the wheel moving without any obvious input!

This looks good?? More like "bumper cars" to me. It has that
interesting arcade effect that when you hit someone from behind, it
bounces them forward. In general, this whole sequence of banging wheels
with the opponent is hardly a "realistic" model either from the physics
or racing simulation standpoint. I hope that this was done on the
absolute lowest realism setting and that the final game will have
higher settings available (in real life, if any two cars touch at all
it is likely that both will be out of the race!).
If I sound grouchy today, maybe it's because I see too much of a trend
toward eye candy over game play in almost every genre of computer game
recently. Who has time to appreciate the scenery when you're trying to
drive an F1 car :-)?

I think you'll find the driver is actually steering with his
feet ......
--
Mart Rogers
look at the base of the wheel and youll see all aids are on (bright green)
thats why his driving is so bad, its limiting his steering input (steering
help is now activeted/deactivated by f1 key) and why theres no damage.
Trust me when i say its easier to spin with the aids all off. (i spun under
braking just after the tunnel when i switched all aids off at ECTS when i
was in the tunnel, i guess everybody that tried it after me had fun:))

I agree, after GPL, it just seems funny to see a wheel turn by itself. I
have to admit, I did not care for the hands at first, but now I prefer them,
and expect sims to have them.

Because most modern F1 cars have some of the displays on the wheel?!?

I must admit, I'm surprised to be hearing this voiced so often. Think about
it: the wheel *won't* be mysteriously rotating by itself; your own steering
wheel, mounted ever-so-close in front of the screen, will be rotating along
with it, turned by you.
Just a thought . . .

I remember the comments about the moving arms when GPL came out. Conditioning seems
to be the cause of initial reactions to different features in a new sim. Things
settled down when a few hundred hours were put in.
I imagine though that the arms may be better feedback for a helmet type stereo
display. When this product matures (price/visual quality) it could become the
monitor of choice for experiencing total immersion. I haven't tried one of those
helmets with a car simulator, but the arms seem like they would help when you can't
see your console and body in front of you.

I cannot subscribe fully to that theory, Keith, simply because at
night when driving (in real terms!) I do not see any great detail in front
of me (in the car) other than the illuminated instruments. I don't *need* to
see the wheel nor the dashboard to be able to drive the car.
I thought the same thing as you with GPL....when the ability to see the
moving wheel and arms was given to us I used them. Because I liked the
appearance....not because it gave me any additional sense of control. Now I
don't use them because they annoy me!

Yes I agree about the night driving. It will be interesting to see where we all
gravitate to (wheel, arms, nothing) with a helmet display, short and long term. In
GPL I found myself using the arms' sharp visual cue to keep my steering inputs as
smooth as possible. Also it was my first clue indicating a noisy pot problem. I
haven't played GPL in a while, can't know if I would tire of it eventually.
Here's a hub for VR helmets, still a bit scary in price and I wouldn't want to meet
a guy wearing one in a dark alley.
