Snapshot of current open-wheel racing sims

A newcomer asked which open-wheel sims were relevant. Most recommended GPL as still the best for physics, with F1 2000 and Grand Prix 3 expected soon, and IndyCar Racing II for CART. David Fisher's advice to skip GPL drew ridicule.

I am brand new to this group (just got my first batch of headers today). I am an F1 and Cart fan. Can you give me a snapshot on what is currently relevant in open-wheel sims? I know of GPL, and see lots of references to it in this group, but its a couple of years old. Is there not any worthy newer open-wheel sims? Now or to be released soon?

GPL is still the pinnacle driving/racing sims for those whose primary interest is the simulation of driving and racing. The reason is simply it's superior physics modeling. But be warned, GPL requires serious effort to master so it can be very frustrating early on. With liberal quantities of time, energy and talent applied, the rewards are substantial. This doesn't mean other sims aren't fun to play but they are all pretenders to the throne....for now. Marty BandCamp wrote: > I am brand new to this group (just got my first batch of headers today). Probably the most anticipated F1 sim due out is Grand Prix 3. Hopefully it'll be out in the next couple months. More info and screenshots at http://www.grandprix3.com/

F12000 is due to be released at the end of the month, and GP3 this summer. Forget the rest. MS/TRi didn't mind my "advice". Magnetic Fields seemed ok with it. ISI recently asked me if I'd be willing to give my "advice" as well. Two months ago I would of suggested GPL to the originator of this thread, but not now with F12000 coming very soon, and GP3 just a few months away. He DID say, "its (GPL) a couple of years old. Is there not any worthy newer open-wheel sims? Now or to be released soon?" With the following recently released or on their way soon, I find it hard to recommend a sim to him that's a year and a half old: F12000, RC2000, WSC, Superbikes2000, Dirt Track Racing, Leadfoot, NFS5, and CM2. If you read his post again, he already knows about GPL but sounds like he's looking for a sim based on modern cars, that is newer than GPL. "I am brand new to this group (just got my first batch of headers today). I am an F1 and Cart fan. Can you give me a snapshot on what is currently relevant in open-wheel sims? I know of GPL, and see lots of references to it in this group, but its a couple of years old. Is there not any worthy newer open-wheel sims? Now or to be released soon?" What amuses me is that the ONLY people who ever complain at me about anything I say regarding sims are the GPL fanatics. Very sensitive group. Especially considering the fact that I think (and have said many, many times) that GPL is an excellent sim. I just don't get misty eyed over it's physics code, or have dillusions that if I master it, it means that I can crush Schumacher if given the chance. David G Fisher

If you want CART then the best is a 4 yr old sim called Indycar Racing II from Papyrus, the same makers as GPL. The problem is it isn't readily available anymore, but if you can find it then you can get current cars. For info on that sim go to http://www.tptcc.com/crc/ For more open wheel stuff http://208.178.180.33/ And sim racing yadda yadda http://www.simracing.com/ For F1 the best is GP2 http://www.grandprix2.com/ And what will be the best current F1 sim, http://gp3.gamestats.com/ You should check out this too... http://www.powersims.com/ check the section titled World Sports Car enjoy! I was referring to both CPR and MTM2. It's a shame that TRI and MS parted ways because I have no doubt that a CPR2 could of been excellent. MTM2 is a brilliant arcade/sim racer and if you look at all of TRI's titles, it's obvious they are a very, very talented group of people. MTM2 > since it's older than GPL, no? ;-) Yes, I would find it hard to recommend MTM2 now. I would say to him though to keep an eye on any new titles from TRI and Papyrus. Specifically N4. I said in another thread that I have no interest in NASCAR, but I'm sure I'll pick up a copy of N4 out of curiosity. I bet that online racing with a sim like N4 could be really excellent. I'm just not interested in the real life NASCAR series. David G Fisher

I do hope, even if it's a little utopian, that the majority of 2000 racing simulator will be quality. Whatever TRI offers, WSC, any Papyrus title with the new game engine (that one can't fail I say), GP3, and probably the couple of unexpected hits "a la DTR". But meanwhile, I say that shelving 15$ while waiting those months for GPL is a bloody good thing, especially when you'll start importing GPL tracks into N4. Don't tell me David you wouldn't like to drive SPA or the RING with a stock-car? ;) -- -- Franois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... -- http://www.WeRace.net -- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.
I don't like stock cars but you're right, the thought of racing them on Spa or the Ring could make for some excellent, close, fun, online racing. So when is N4 supposed to be released? David G Fisher
