You mean you don't lift off the gas when changing gear in GPL??? How does your car survive????

I've been playing GPL for ages now, but no one had said anything about using a clutch. I just realised that there was a button for a clutch so then I started using it and the first race that I've done with the clutch I qualified 2nd, with a 1:30.36 on Monza, then I finished 6th after being spun on the first corner, so maybe it isn't as hard as I first thought, I can accelerate a bit quicker but I can certainly brake a hell of a lot quicker. What sort of times are good for Monza?

I'm not sure why using the clutch for anything but moving off the starting grid would help your lap times. GPL uses an automatic clutch when changing gears (yes, even in manual transmission), so there's no need to manually press the clutch when changing gears. In fact, it would only help to slow you down because you'd have to let off the gas each time you press the clutch - or risk damaging your engine.

Not as difficult as you first thought? Thanks to the Global Hype Scaling, every time you get better, so will the AI, so you'll need to put in a lot of improvement to stay competitive. Dunno how your braking improves by using the clutch, because you lose the "engine braking" effect My best time at Monza (Eagle) is 1:28.13 and I know full well there are plenty of people out there doing better laps than me :-( leigh wrote in message <89omeg$lv$[email hidden]>... >I've been playing GPL for ages now, but no one had said anything aboutusing >a clutch. Simply click once to shift down to neutral, blip, and then click to shift down into the gear that matches your revs. Upshifts can and should work as they are now. I guess the newbie market would require "shifting help" instead of just "auto-tranny". > > Don't get me wrong, I'm still amazed by what a great piece of work GPL is. Every day. :-) Michael.

Surely it won't take too much programming effort to add a few lines to stop the engine if the revs go below 1200 or something, then you have to start back at the pits again.

I've been playing gpl for awhile, but no one said anything about brakes! I just discovered the brake pedal the other day and man, it is not as difficult as I first thought. Hey, anybody know what that steering wheel thingie is? Ace wrote:

You're right Neo, that's the one thing I'd have Papy patch if they were so inclined. GPL has an auto-throttle blip on downshifts to simulate the actual method of sequential downshift used by the drivers back then. It will still get your backend loose if you downshift too early but it will always allow you to get into gear. I guess Papy could argue that they don't have an auto-clutch since in real life you don't physically need a clutch if you lift on upshift and rev-match (throttle blip) on downshift (I can do this in my street car, and yes it is a shitbox so I don't care if I crunch the gears). Now if they had modeled the gearbox/drive train to the point where you had to rev match or clutch to get in gear I would be in sim-heaven. Only as an option of course since not many folks have a clutch pedal. I don't think it should be that hard to implement. They could just add a gear-crunch noise and dump you into neutral if not in the appropriate RPM range. Don't get me wrong, I'm still amazed by what a great piece of work GPL is. Patrick
