R.A.S. Something just occurred to me as I was watching Cybernet here in the UK with the GP3 preview around Monaco. Haven't seen any real discussion (I may have missed it - if so.....er burp!!) of how Crammond is going to handle the weather effects. One of my favourite first experiences in simming was when I bought F1GP for my Atari ST and I think it was at San Marino when I first took part in a "wet" race. Flippin heck. Got to admit at first I thought my telly had thrown a wobbly and tried to turn up the colour and contrast...!!....nitwit. The start of the race was fantastic....just a sheet of different greys and disappearing hardware....and as for slipstreaming....wow, half the fun was trying to figure out where the car in front bloody was.!! So...got me thinking. Is GP3 going to have the same type of greyout as GP1 from the start or is it going to be a kind of dry, spots, pissing down back to dry kind of setup. What kind of effect do we want....kaput visibility beyond the front wing or a bluring of the "visor" making the telemetrics hard to read. Can this be done....? Seems to me a lot of development time has gone into the physics and AI side of GP3 and this should make for dicey driving under abnormal conditions. The thought of driving around Monaco as its lashing down makes my knees wobble....can't wait..!!! Anybody got any other idea's and suggestions.? Thanks fer listening. Ian. (idav)

> One of my favourite first experiences in simming was when I bought F1GPfor > my Atari ST and I think it was at San Marino when I first took part in a > "wet" race. I can't remember my first race in the rain, but some of the most thrilling were with Formula 1 on the Playstation, followed later by F1 97, F1RS and MGPRS2. It's quite a rush reaching a blind corner in the sun light but it's an entirely different story when every corner is blind. One of my favourite features in F1 97 was that your visor would also get dirty and you'd have to pull away a plastic strip to see clearly again. I can't think of any other simulators which have done this, which is a shame as it made things feel just that little bit more realistic. > Is GP3 going to have the same type of greyout as GP1 from the start or isit > going to be a kind of dry, spots, pissing down back to dry kind of setup. There's no reason they couldn't have several weather effects, from sunny, to cloudy to rain. Some parts of the track could remain dry whilst other areas are incredibly wet, forcing us to think hard about our tire choices. > What kind of effect do we want....kaput visibility beyond the front wingor > a bluring of the "visor" making the telemetrics hard to read. No visibility beyond the front of your car would be useless, and I certainly wouldn't want to play it. You'd need to have at least a couple of car lengths visibility. I've never been in a storm in which I couldn't see many cars ahead of me, except for when the spray of a car in front causes water to splash into the air, but that's not quite the same thing. > Seems to me a lot of development time has gone into the physics and AIside > of GP3 and this should make for dicey driving under abnormal conditions. > > The thought of driving around Monaco as its lashing down makes my knees > wobble....can't wait..!!! If you've ever tried F1RS or MGPRS2 you'll know that when exiting the tunnel at Monaco the entire screen fills with an almost-white colour, simulating the sun daze we get when coming out from the dark and into the light. Very clever stuff, which I hope will be improved on in the future.

Hi, I remember reading in an interview somewhere (on a German site, I believe) that GP3 will model every puddle! (I don't know if that was the exact words because I had the page translated!) I hope GP3 has good dynamic weather (having the race start sunny, cloud over and then the *possibility* of rain) Having a random element to the weather would be great, it would add to the strategy of a race and always keep you guesing. I hope it has it has weather effects as good as RC2000. The fog and rain effects are incredible. Instead of having wipers (of course), removing the tear offs would be very cool. It was brought up in all thsoe interviews. Its supposed to be able to raina nd stop again during a race if IIRC, Also, a "dry-line". And wet and dry places. It seems to be able to have differnet part with different grip, now thats rialism if it works out and is included in the GP3! Don't get me started. I had an Amiga, but jesus I poured some time into F1GP and Dungeon master. Mind you I poured heaps of time into Revs for the c64. The days when 8 fps was amazing!!!!! Nostalgia ain't what it used to be :) Bazza Ian <*@*.com> wrote in article <InVv4.5657$O5.170313@stones>...

I don't understand you people! Hey wake up: you're over-exxagerating the past. I too had an C64 back in the old days (with a tape recorder, took app. 15 mins to load donkey-kong from tape) but I can tell you i wouldn't wanna go back to that amateur level. Admit it: Never had that much fun on a PC as now whilst playing GPL (and hopefully GP3 will beat this). Jan. LL <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:5rRv4.2028$[email hidden]...

My first computer was a Timex Sinclair 1000 with the 16kb upgrade (Whoo hoo!). It was so slow I had to program my "breakout" game in assembler ;-) I have that same flight sim .. by the time you loaded a game from tape you wanted to play a different game!! LOL. Jason .

I think some of the graphics have become anti-aliased (in the mind) over time. I'm sure any of us who play modern sims would wonder at the blockiness and textureless scenery in those old C64/Atari ST/Amiga sims if we were to see them today. I must have spent thousands of hours on it, both racing and tweaking the code. :) I still have my old STE as well, but have never felt the urge to try F1GP out on it for many a year. The AI was far too easy to beat though and there was some dumb code in there that meant that they were excrutiatingly slow on certain sections of some circuits, though I was able to fix this problem quite easily. Mind you, when it came to rain racing, that was a different affair. Those AI cars were way too quick and seemed to have far to much grip when exiting corners, whilst I struggled not to spin my wheels. Even going through turns 1 gear higher than normal didn't help much. As far as the way it looked during wet racing, it wasn't much different to dry racing. All that changed was the sky was grey and the car and track colours were more greyed out. There was no restriction of view due to spray or anything like that and certainly no more difficult to see what was going on compared to a dry race. That would have been impossible of course on that 4Mhz lil ol' thing. :)

It was Crammond himself, answering a question about weathereffects. "Rain will be simulated down to the individual puddle" comes close.
