Before you buy.
SUNNYVALE, CA--March 6, 2000--AMD today reached a computer industry
milestone, announcing commencement of shipments
of 1GHz AMD Athlon processors. The first commercially available
systems based on the 1GHz AMD Athlon processor will be
available from Compaq Computer Corporation and Gateway.
Almost time to upgrade again......

You know, Ive kinda become un-excited with new processors that come out,..
Not that Im unimpressed with a 1gig machine, but I've really lost that
"golly-gee" feeling whenever new hardware comes out, and especially when It
comes to processors,...
Rememebr when P90s came out? WHOA, so FASST...
and then P166s, WHOA,.. no way,..
and then 233's!!!,.. I can run anything!
then P2's!!! WHOA!!!!! now way, 300mhz?? what will I do with that speed?
now P3s, athalons.... (i think you get the picture....)
But a year from now we will all be going "Wow! the 2 Gig processor just came
out!!, wish i hadn't bought that 1.6 gig processor..." Sound familiar? Its
getting hard to get really excited about faster processors, becuase you know
tha a faster one is on the horizon, and after that? you guessed it, another
fast processor,... 3D cards are the same deal.
Do yourself a favour, get something thats about 4 months old, spend about
half the price and get 90% of the performance...
With that all said, I sure would love one ;-) don't get me wrong, If i had
the cash I'd be all over the thing like Oprah on a baked ham....

Ive bought top of the line almost every time ive bought a computer in
the past, but the cost is outrageous thats for sure. Especially
knowing that the price will drop with the next faster processors.
I doubt i will be doing that again, but i usually like to upgrade when
a processor doubles in mhz from what i currently have which is a
P2-400 that i bought in august'98. Sure it still runs everything i own
fine but it's starting to feel/sound old :))
I sure would like to have my next upgrade be a 1GHz tho :)
I plan on waiting for a while until the 1.3-1.5 GHz or so comes out,
then the 1GHz wont be so expensive.

Here's more new i found at yahoo:

Unlike at AMD's Sunnyvale, Calif., offices, it was a quiet Monday
newswise at Intel's Santa
Clara, Calif., headquarters. That is because Intel has yet to
announce its 1GHz Pentium III
chip.
Sources say, however, that the company will announce its 1GHz Pentium
III on Wednesday.
The announcement should be accompanied by supporting announcements by
PC makers,
including Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HWP - news), IBM and Dell
Computer Corp.
(Nasdaq:DELL - news), all of which will offer 1GHz Pentium III-based
PCs.
Intel, for its part, is also working on a gigahertz-plus chip. This
chip, known by the code name
Willamette, is due in the second half of the year. Intel recently
demonstrated the chip running
at 1.5GHz. The chip, which will begin at gigahertz-plus speeds, will
also offer integrated
cache, a 400MHz system bus and dual Rambus RDRAM (Rambus direct RAM)
memory
channels, among other features. It will also include a new multimedia
instruction set, similar to
the Pentium III's Streaming SIMD Extensions. The instruction set is
tuned to help speed video
and speech recognition processing, among other things.
--------
Their already demonstrating the 1.5 but do you think that it will be
the next release after the 1GHz? Not likely, they still need to suck
the cash out of people by raising the speed in increments of say 33-66
or 100 mhz.

This "war"between AMD and Intel maybe fun for them but is not really great
for us. It is only badly coded software that really needs these speeds at
the moment. Someone has to lose this speed comp.between these two companies
and
then where will we be? Remember the prices we used to pay for 133 pentiums
from Intel. No prizes for guessing what will happen if Intel emerges the
only real big time player out of this.

That's evolution my friend.
I feel most sorry for those poor computer-illiterate people who bought a
shiny new Pentium II 450MHz with 64MB RAM just before the Pentium 3 450MHz
came out. One of my parents friends bought their son a system with that spec
back that (cost a couple of grand too), and now their son is already asking
for an upgrade.
Personally, I'm fully intending to buy a high spec machine of at least
900Mhz, as soon as I can. I've been suffering with a Pentium 200MHz and 32MB
of RAM for about three years. Time for some serious horse power, especially
for GPL.

Best of all, you shouldn't have to wait long. Intel are expected to release
their 1.5GHz processor line by the end of the year, which isn't long in the
scheme of things.
But, Intel's 1 GHz cannot sell as CPU, but whole system, because it's too
hysteric to tame. Forwarding are fairly small number of OEM with IBM and HP.
Anyway, each real price will drop same range when they arrive market. There
are just paper release.

I dont think AMD is going to "die", but one thing abou AMD that i found odd
was taht when a couple of buddies of mine recently upgraded, they had
serious problems with RAM in their AMDs... they couldnt find RAM that was
stable enough... Im not dissing AMD im just poiting out the problems these
guys had tweaking out their new machines,...

>Good point, i built a 600 Athlon system last week (not for me
unfortunately) and had to return the RAM (64MbPC-100) cos it wouldn't
install Win98 (setup has detected a corrupt cab file). The supplier said
it was probably incompatible and sent me some more. But then the PC
refused to boot. In the end i just swapped that RAM with some that I've
got in a 400 PII and they're both rock solid.
I tried running GPL on the Athlon to compare fps with my 300@450 but
couldn't get the V3 drivers fixed in the short time I had :( *bugger*
