My suggestion would be to get a Voodoo3 PCI card by that time or a
Voodoo2. With the next generation of cards, these should be really cheap
by then. They can in principle run alongside the other card of choice,
and for GPL both of the Voodoos should do the job.
Then, if I were you, I'd make damn sure Matrox has a solid OpenGL
driver.

Creative has done a "Glide wrapper" for their Nvidia cards. I have no idea
how it works(and i checked a bit on their site with no luck).

GPL does have an OpenGL patch which works well for most people.

I'm using a TNT2 with the Papy OpenGL Beta2 patch, and along with the
registry fix for the mirrors the card now works very well with gpl.
Comments I've read from people that have done comparisons between
Voodoo and Nvidia cards with gpl have said that the Nvidia card
actually looked a bit better due to the filtering that the Voodoos use.
It's questionable whether there is any advantage to using a Voodoo over
a Nvidia for gpl at this date.

My experience is only up to TNT2.

Hmmm....interesting. I have a V2 and my father has a TNT and I think it
looks much better on my V2. I tried all the filtering stuff in core.ini
but
none of them made it look as good as on my V2. Might be that I'm missing
something out but if not there is no question on which path I'll take in
the future, the Glide path! I guess a V3 or Vx (x>=4) will make it even
more beautiful. Anyone else have an opinion on this? Let's hear em'!

Someone did a online review
of Voodoo versus Nvidia using GPL, with a number of side by side
screen shots. The Voodoo shots looked, and were described, as if you
were looking through a very fine mesh, slightly hazy, due to there
particular filtering method. No big deal. Sorry I can't find the url.
Both cards are excellent, and for sure you have to jump through a few
hoops to get the TNT working properly with gpl.

Hehe...I think I came across the site you are talking about yesterday.
Unfortunately I wasn't surfing from my own computer so it's a bit hard to
get a hold the url. But I still stand by my opinion.

It looks nice,
but has the same problem as the Nvidia cards - the mirrors don't work
very well. It also some seams in the sky, which I can ignore easily
enough :)
you must use a particular filtering (the one suggested in the readme
from the opengl beta from papy), and I suggest you turn off as much
detail in the mirrors as you can stand.
but the voodoo2 still seems smoother, which is the aim I guess, so I
still use that. the image quality difference isn't big enough for me
to really notice.

well (thanks Stuart Mann...). Haven't had much time to test them out
properly but I can tell you that the framerates at the start increased by
about 6fps by using the V2 as opposed to the TNT2 with 19 opponents. Once a
race was in progress I don't think there was that much difference though.
The V2 appeared to have slightly brighter colours although the TNT2 was
improved quite a bit by using the 3.68 Detonator Drivers from Nvidia's
site.

In theory it should work, but you would need two monitors, or does
someone make a pass thru cable for this sort-of thing? (how would it
work?) Myself I have a TNT2 AGP and a Voodoo2.
