During the 500cc GP race on Sunday, one of the announcers mentioned that Kenny Roberts Jr. had learned the European circuits on a simulation. I don't recall them saying which sim he had used. -- don "Getting hit by a meteorite is an accident... everything else is driver-error." "Olav K. If people on this newsgroup start saying that CPR was a great sim because real drivers think so (what would they know?), my head will explode. David G Fisher

From an article on www.seventgear.com about the champcar-rookies this year Alexandre Tagliani from the Players-Forsythe Team told about his simracing: >He plays the racing simulations Gran Turismo 2 and Precision Simulation >with a Microsoft steering wheel with feedback. In fact he was playing when >he talked to us. He says the simulations are realistic in terms of how the >car performs, but "you don't have the feeling under your butt" of what the >car is doing. You can't feel what's going on as much as see it. I take Precision Simulation is supposed to be CART Precision Racing. Astounding that he think that sim is realistic, but so says Mark Blundell. Are we simracers nuts, or is the answer that since the professional openwheeldrivers are so enormously better than most of us, they are able to get some sense out of the sims we feel undrivable. Will this mean GPL is arcade ? :) CART should pay Papy to make a GPL-engined CART sim so their drivers could practice more (read Shig :) Didn't Juan Montoya also use C:PR to learn the tracks ? The problem is probably that it is the best CART sim out, but far from good enough. Disclaimer: I had some great moments with C:PR after the release, but I stopped playing it after the release of GPL. After I bought my MSFF wheel i wasn't able to drive C:PR at all, couldn't get the car to go where I wanted to :( -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying

this is funny since you would actaully think a real driver would be the ultimate judge of whether some game was a sim or not since they have been in the real thing. And No I am not saying since someone ran Formula Ford, or GT cars or even Solo ll they would be able to say any better then a real pro driver whether a game is a sim or not. I just find it funny myself. Rofl. Dave David G Fisher <[email hidden]> wrote in article <1GSB4.8102$[email hidden]>...

Or maybe it's real racing that's arcade, and only the computer stuff (when well-implemented) that's "real." (!) --DK

As I did not frequent RAS at the time I don't know which critisisms were leveled at it here. I have always found C:PR both challenging and enjoyable from a driving point of view. My PC didn't have the *ooomph* to run it properly at the time and I had no FF-wheel, but other than the poor framerate and the terrible AI I had no bones with it. I have it on my "to be revisited"-list. > Will this mean GPL is arcade ? :) If you're willing to exploit the approximations in the model and set up your car specifically for the purpose, an arcade driving style can be very successfull in GPL. So in a way it is. Topographical accuracy of the tracks is supposed to be good. So you can use it for a virtual track walk and have a feel of you might want to be doing when you drive it in the real car. I do remember reading something to that effect, yes. > Disclaimer: I had some great moments with C:PR after the release, but I > stopped playing it after the release of GPL. I really hope eveyone to notice that little smiley after my statemnt. Btw, i'm much better in GPL than in any arcade game, since I brake and lift :)

Except Cleveland with it's funny front streck chicanery :)

Yeah, hitting the turn right at road america was great. I did it a lot with the joystick, but i'm a mess with the wheel. Another disclaimer : My original post was not intended as any pro this or that sim, I was just a bit baffled by Taglianis statements and wanted to share them. -- Olav K.
