I remember now why GPL went back to EB
two hours after I bought it 5 years ago. It will
not recognize my steering axis (0). The calibrate
screen seems to know that it is there, but the slider
stays on the right and moves only slightly when the
wheel is turned. The wheel is an MS Pro Racing wheel,
runs fine in all other games .
When I saw it used at EB last week I decided to try it again.
I know thousands are enjoying GPL and I've looked over
several forums but find nothing about this specific issue. I
can't return this one (but I really don't want to, I WANT
TO DRIVE IT!). I remember hours of fun in the demo.
How can someone create such a beautiful driving model
and the screw it up with buggy support routines?
Any body got any suggestions as to a fix? I've installed
patch 1.2 and the D3D fix. My cpu is below 1700 (1400)
so I left off the fast cpu fix. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, I believe you are speaking of "generic" vs "direct"
input. I tried that and was told that "Windows NT (I have XP) does not
have (support?) generic driver". I tried running GPL in Windows 98
compatibility mode but I couldn't even get through the menus. Who
knows? I'm finding a lot of related sites and there have to be others
who have had the same problem.

Hmmm, very odd! I run GPL on my XP Home system and have no problems.
(I know THAT doesn't help!)
Did you go to the controller assignment page before you tried the
calibration screen? Did you, in fact, turn the wheel LEFT when asked
to do so? (It messes things up if you turn right when asked to turn
left, but it's an easy thing to do -- he says from personal
experience. <sigh>)
Do you have more than one controller attached to your computer at the
time? I sometimes play some of the flight sims, and if I forget to
unplug the joystick before starting GPL, it will get confused or
select the wrong controller. GPL wants the controller you are using
to be the FIRST device.
I can't think of anything else to suggest at the mo. Good luck!

Uhm, no. If you're using the DirectInput driver you can have multiple
controllers, and the one you're using doesn't have to be the first. As
a matter of fact you can use multiple controllers at the same time.
You can select a different controller by clicking the golden arrows.
Make sure the controllers are calibrated correctly in Windows before
you're using them in GPL.
The only problem I can think of is that the controller you're using
does have a range larger than GPL can handle. (Over 2000 IIRC).
Cheers!

routines in their games. I have always accredited them with simple, always
works controller routines.
But thats not helping you however so first things I would try is making sure
that the your controller is
1. calibrated correctly in Windows
2. set as controller ID 1 in the Controller IDs tab in the windows setup.
3. make sure after you have calibrated in Windows that you are selecting
"Direct controller" in GPL.
Its weird that it works in other games and not GPL. As a rule the likes of
Papyrus GPL, Nascars are the best and easiest to setup

I get a bit reactive and blame the software hastily too often. It
must be a peculiarity with the wheel, because I got a joystick
to work perfectly. I'll try the Windows ID check, but I've
been meaning to get a new wheel soon, so now I have
a good excuse. Thanks.

If you're doing a new install, note that GPL won't run on XP before you
patch it to 1.2.0.2. If you've already done that (or are copying an old
install), turn indexing on for the GPL folder and modify the lastRasterizer
line in app.ini to read: lastRasterizerDLL = softdll.dll
It should run then.

Good luck concerning your controller.

DXTweak2 may fix it.
I find I have to use it with different settings for RT, GPL etc
