Mobil 1 Rally Championship impressions

A magazine's five-star review of Mobil 1 Rally Championship prompted discussion. Owners praised its graphics and stage modelling and noted frequent patches, while Remco Moedt, David Karr and others criticised its physics, force feedback and random damage. David G Fisher defended it vigorously, which led to comparisons with GPL's lack of patches.

3dfx should be the best source...once I updated my driver it got rid of some of the problems. I also had to delete some of the *.mov files because it would give me a "guru meditation" error. Works great now! Full resolution (1200x???x32bit) with max details etc, runs so smooth on my PIII 600B! There is a discussion group somewhere on the web that was able to help me. Look for old Mobil 1 posts in the NG. Hope this helps. LoudMouth wrote:

There has been a fair bit of talk about it here, it's just all those damn GPL freaks make more posts and dilute the NG! :0) I bought it about 2 weeks ago...Fantastic game! (Once you get it working...) There are a few minor bugs with starting the game etc., but there are enough people around to help you through these. The forcefeedback is incredible and really can make you somewhat tired after a segment or 6.. The eye candy is VERY sweet too! I've already gotten 2 new cavities since I bought it! :0) It's very challenging (downright HARD at times!) and has a good damage model (I always seem to lose 2nd gear!? then 1st etc..etc..etc..). While the track side obstacles may be too 'solid' as compared to real life, it's one of the best games I've played! Buy it! My POV, Mike Bill Jones wrote:

It was discussed quite heavily when it came out (under various names, RC2K for example). It's physics model is the best I've seen on a rally game (I've not played that many though). However, it does have significant problems (concrete obstacles which bring the car to a sudden stop when, at 100 mph, it hits a hay-bale or fence). It will take you a long time to beat this game (unless your driving is a lot better than mine) and it has the best sense of speed of any driving game I've ever seen. In GPL, 60 mph feels crawlingly slow - in Mobil Rally 60mph is a hair-raising and terrifying experience in some places. (I think this is perhaps because rallying in reality seems faster at the same speed, if you know what I mean, because of the closeness of obstacles etc - in car shots from the real sports give me this impression). I haven't played the game too much because I found that I had only room for 1 "real sim" in my head and it was making me a worse GPL driver so I stick to "arcade" games and GPL. (Driver, for example, is not enough like driving a car that it affects my GPL driving). -- Richard G. I downloaded the first demo and fell in love. Then I downloaded the second demo and the affair continued. Then I bought an ACT LABS Force RS Wheel and Shifter and it's hard to stop playing! If you relish the thought of flying across near-photo realistic landscapes in a car that actually loses parts if you hit things, then M1RC may be the game for you. I like M1RC so much that I have been picking up all manner of other racers for comparison, including Network Q Rac, Ultim@te Race Pro, Motorhead, Colin McRae Rally, International Rally Championship and SCGT. M1RC ranks with the best of them. If, however, you've gotten used to the superwide roads in Colin McRae, M1RC will be a rude shock. There are places in M1RC where the road is little more than a ditch! And a lumpy one thanks to force feedback! On Wed, 22 Mar 2000 10:28:25 -0500, "Bill Jones" <[email hidden]> wrote:

>If it's that good, why aren't folks > raving about it or even talking about it in this newsgroup? Its mainly because the NG is very GPL orientated. not a bad thing, GPL is very good but the tendancy is to compare *every* new sim to it. There is also the mentality of the odd few that GPL is so good becuase it is "hard", not because it has superior physics, graphics or whatever. Harder = Better sim? I don't think so. I love this rally game, I find it very entertaining and realistic, It beats GPL in many way: 1.The graphics and lighting effects beat GPL hands down. GPL is good but just that little bit more cartonn-ish than RC2000. 2. The idea of having a moving driver figure in the cockpit viewis much better. In GPL, the guy has hands that g on for miles (..so it seems anyway) with no elbow and almost no change in size or shape from the wrist... RC2000 is modelled very well, looks good and is very smooth. 3. Weather, this is the king sim of weather(so far) with so many, as well as different types of roads and night day, dsk, dawn, you name it. 4. Of course my main complaint with GPL is how shocking the feeling of speed is, I love the game other than that. At high speeds the cars awkward handling maks up for this but it very hard to tell weather your going 20 or 60 at some times, slow speeds especially are hard to judge. RC2000 is unbeliavable in this category, on a long sretch of road its often pssible to actually force yourself off the throttle in risk of a crash, it really does happen when your looking into a blind section of road! 5. How the car reacts to a movement is superb. The hand brake just spins it sideays but it skids out, you can brake too late, and go half a mile down the road before you find out you should have made a turn at some points....hehe:-) The only con with this game comes with number 5. The car responds well to movements. The problem s however that when you get a GPL car sideways (especially with FF on full blast) you have to correct it, the car fish tails and YOU must corect the skid. RC2000 has the tendancy to make it just that ittle bit easier, you can't really "loose" the car too easily, you can usually keep a sonsistent turn in on a skid where it mgith require a little opposite lock in real life (or GPL). This is the only flaw, although the phsyics look real enough, you don't have as hard a job to hold it as with GPL somtimes. Ok, but to stop comparing them: GPL means '60's F1 cars RC2000 means modern day rally cars, Both driving sims but nothing alike. Its a prefrence on hich to buy but I do lke RC2000 very much. -- GraDee ------------------------------------------------------ Karting "3.65" http://www.esatclear.ie/~karting/ ------------------------------------------------------ "Did you press the button Doogle" ".... The physics are not really bad, but they are far away from GPL (yeah, GPL...<g>). I don't think that even tyrecontact is modelled. It's a FAR model, where the behaviour is linked to the current surface. For me it's a big spoiler... Controller setup: I had to edit INI files to get my setup working properly. Also, I would like the option to adjust deadzone/sensitivity/etc... Menu: Why o why do I HAVE to use the keyboard. It would be nice if you're able to use a mouse... Remco

I would second Remco's moderate recommendation of the game. I agree that it has stunning graphics--really a leap forward there. And the gameplay (if you can accept the loneliness of the rally experience) is deep and well-modeled. But in the end, I can't really praise the physics. The mere fact that the game developers have resorted to a "do-it-yourself" approach to correcting some pretty formidable problems regarding gravity, accel- and braking-grip, inertia has really been disappointing to me. (By "do-it-yourself," I mean releasing patches that encouraged purchasers to adjust all the parameters themselves to "get it right" for their own tastes. In one sense, I suppose that's to be lauded--it does show a commitment to the product. But, I feel [IMO only], it's also an admission of defeat on the progrrammers' part.) --DK "Remco Moedt" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... >Physics (What else <g>).The physics are not really bad, but they are far away from GPL (yeah, GPL...<g>). Well I just bought the gaem today. Its a fun game and very imersive due to the graphics. the phyics leave a bit to be desired, but I have never driven a Rally car. I would say it gives you the feeling of bombing down a road, well more of a cow path at a high rate of speed, and dealing with the sun in your eyes and such. Overall its no GPL, or even SCGT, but its a blast to play with. Dave

It is the SCGT of rally games. Definitely not arcade. Patch 4 is out already with 5 coming--permits physics tweaking so you can set it up to be more realistic than the default settings. A few video, controller and installation problems for some, but overall a ton of fun. Well worth getting if you have even a small interest in rally racing. Marc. I really love this game deeply and currently play it more then any other, but this does bug me some. My experience with front wheel drive cars that are light in the back (which these seem to be) on slippery surfaces seems contrary to RC2K. They will fish tail, even on dry pavement (you gotta go real fast). They will definitely spin. It is not that easy on RC2K to induce a spin; it should be much easier. Damage is a bit understated. I hit a tree at 202 km/h yesterday; nothing too serious. There at least should be an option in the game to model damage more realistically (outside of the modifiers in the ini file); it would make the game even harder then it is, but really put the fear of god into you during a championship. In that area, this is the only game that I will often lift a little even in a straight section; the feeling of speed is awesome and that tree up there is scary even if it isn't a killer. PMK

Out of the box it has superb graphics, wonderful course modelling, a frighteningly real sense of speed and a really slick interface. The dynamics, however, leave something to be desired, IMHO. Colin McRae Rally has a better feel, and is a fair bit tougher (and even McRae was too easy IMO). I find it too easy in RC2000 to go absolutely bombing through corners with very little correction or difficulty. I have not tried the latest patches which allegedly allow one to tweak the physics. If someone could post links to suggested settings, etc, I would be rather grateful. Ryan

They put that option in for the sim fans that feel that they know what's real and no one else has a clue. Gravity, acceleration, etc., are all accurate. While the brakes on a rally car are incredibally strong, they were set extra strong in order to no make the game impossible for 99% of the people who purchase it. That's the only setting that needs to be changed.

This is absolute trash. GPL was still one of the few games in 1998 which didn't ship with working opengl or direct3d. Z. Please remove my_pants when replying.

Um... so where is decent non Glide/Rendition support for GPL? Z. Please remove my_pants when replying.

They don't have to, as it would probably sell a lot based on the reputation they have built in sales of their previous efforts. But by patching it, they are trying to keep the customers of their franchise happy, which means more purchases down the road. I hated the game at first, but after finally getting my hands on a wheel, instead of a joystick, I have a lot of fun with it. It also looks great, which doesn't hurt. Stephen

Sorry to make you vomit David but again GPL: Only 2 patches, the first wasn't really a patch: It was the FFF (first F stands for 'Fantastic') implementation and the second was a 'real' patch because (as I read somewhere) a stupid bug made it in the final 1.1 release causing slow-downs on some systems. I have tried M1RC and many other racing games such as TOCA2, Sega Rally, Ford Racing. M1RC is the best in terms of speed feeling, forcefeedback and the reality of the scene. But how does that work? I mean, does it improve tyre grip? Or does it create stronger brakes? Then why are there separate values for accelaration, braking and sliding? In what way are these values plugged in in the physics model? Remco

Funny, IIRC one of the developers said that once....

I never said that GPL does model the 1967 cars well, I only refer to the way they model general physics.

Well, prove it...you can say "Wrong" as much as you like, but so far I didn't find those amazing physics you obviously have found...The FF I found was some vibration on the road, and less resistance when a surface get more slippery... I didn't feel weight shift, but I don't think that's linked to the tyre model anyway... Remco

Will the ultimate patch update the arcade physics of RC2000? Ok, I'll be honest, I loved RC2000, had lots of fun with it while it lasted. So there. I would of appreciated a few patches from Papyrus. Might of even kept me interested in it a lot longer. Crappy framerate could of been improved. The old line, "it's the physics model zapping the processor" doesn't hold water when by simply changing to chase view, your framerate shot way up. Physics are the same in both views. The graphics engine just isn't that good. BTW, when is someone going to blame the poor framerate in F12000 on the "ultimate physics model"? No, that would be impossible. Only with GPL can that claim be made. D3D being left out was a joke. Anyone care to list alllllll the steps necessary for a GPL newbie to play online? Downloads......core ini. changes........modem setting adjustments...........etc. Geeez. Two years later and people are still trying to find out how to keep from being disco'ed. A patch which made online play as simple, and with equal performance to the MS and Ratbag titles, Papyrus's own N3, and now EA's F1 2000, would of been much appreciated. This game has the absolute best graphics quality I have ever seen in any racing game. The environments are colorful and beautiful to drive through, albeit distracting because of it. The cars are a bit too hair-trigger twitchy for my preferences, but maybe thats realistic for these types of vehicles. I like the way that you can explore offroad a bit also. There are a few quirks in the physics model, such as the way that your car can slide laterally across a hillside or trench for a few seconds even after all momentum should have dissapated. Anyways, I am very happy with the game, although I have had it crash 4 or 5 times after a race has concluded
