To anyone who has played this game:
Well, Im considering of buying NFS5 tomorrow, and I'd just like to know
these 5 questions:
1. Are there any tracks on dirt?
2. Do they have the racing Porsches, like the old Rothman's ones in
rallying?
3. Is there stuff like lift off oversteer, throttle oversteer, and
understeer sometimes, locking up wheels, effective pendulum turns, etc.?
4. Do the cars take damage?
5. Does the game seem like it's editable? Like the previous NFS's?
Thanks,
Alex
Questions before buying NFS Porsche Unleashed
A prospective buyer asked about dirt tracks, rally cars and handling in NFS Porsche Unleashed. Owners listed the many Porsche models included but said there were no rally cars. Some argued it modelled modern sports cars as well as GPL modelled 1967 F1, while others noted the lack of tyre lockup and throttle oversteer. Radical Entertainment's Joe McGinn said the AI appeared to use the same physics as the player.

There are sections of tracks that are loose surface, like dirt,
snow, rain, etc..

>rallying?
There are 356,356a,356b,550,911,914,928,944,930,935,944,
959,964,965,993,996,boxster,gt1
Also, there are several models of many of the above, like coupes,
cabrios, targas, speedsters, supers, carrera, etc.,etc.,etc... ;)

Yep. It feels a LOT better than the other NFS titles. You'll like it,
unless you are looking for GPL-style realism.
>4. Do the cars take damage?
Yes, and the damage modeling is pretty cool,
particularly the visual damage.

My guess would be yes.

Alex, do you like Porsches? If so, buy it.

Thanks rrev! I'll defidently buy it.
I dont expect any game to be like GPL, but I expect, from what you say, for
it to be around SCGT's level, which I love. Right now I
play GPL, Viper Racing, DTR, RC2K, some CMR, and SCGT.
Sounds great! Loved the original, sold the 3rd, and looks like the 5th is
great!
Thanks,
Alex

hit the nail on the head. I feel that that NFSPU (and Viper Racing as
well) does as good of a job modeling modern-era sports cars as GPL does
of modeling 1967-era Grand Prix machines.
It could be new love, but right now, I also like the feel of NFSPU's
physics model slightly better than Viper Racing (a greater sense of
inertial adds to the realism in NFSPU) -- and I have always maintained
that Viper racing is as accurate of a model of a Viper GTS as GPL is of
a 1967 Lotus, Ferrari, etc.
Call me a heretic, but I would be disappointed if a Viper or Porsche
simulator felt like GPL -- a modern street-legal sports car should feel
dramatically different than a lightweight, open-wheel, purpose-built
race car.
So, given that, I personally feel that from this perspective, NFSPU is
as good as GPL.

Not really. While some sections may be dusty, or
snow-covered, or dirt-covered, there is not a real rally stage in the
game (if I can infer that from your next question).
>2. Do they have the racing Porsches, like the old Rothman's ones in

Zero rally Porsches (neither the 911 nor the Group B 959),
which disappointed me somewhat. Nor are there any real racing paint
schemes (be it Martini, Rothmans or the more recent Mobil 1 GT1
colors).
>3. Is there stuff like lift off oversteer, throttle oversteer, and

Very much so. The driving model is very good, although
(despite the ABS option being available) I've yet to observe a locked
wheel.
>4. Do the cars take damage?
Yes, and the damage you take is dependent on the car you drive
as well as the parts that are fitted to it (i.e. fibreglass doors are
more expensive to repair).
>5. Does the game seem like it's editable? Like the previous NFS's?
Only time wil tell, but I certainly hope someone can plop in a
few Ferraris to challenge the Porsches at their own game!
Don't delay: This is a very good game!

Long Live Nigel Mansell!
Just curios, but everyone is saying OF COURSE it isn't as realistic as GPL?
But no one has said why? Is this as good and no one will admit it?

It's pretty damn close. Maybe just as good. But targeted at a
different market.
I would go so far as to say it's the "GPL of arcade games". That is,
it has by far the most realistic physics in a mass-market targetted
game.
And it is certainly a vastly superior GAME to GPL - no 20,000-seller
here! Interestingly, I find it very difficult at some tracks, with
powerful cars, yet that won't detract from it's arcade appeal. EA was
smart enough to scale the difficulty, start it out very easy (with the
old less powerful cars) and move it up gradually. Something Papy would
do well do learn from.

Upside out, or inside down...False alarm the only game in town.

The game is great, but the physics model isn't as good as it could
have been. For starters, with ABS off, there is no tire lockup.
Another thing lacking in the physics engine is throttle induced
oversteer. I'm all the way up to "Modern Era" already driving the
very powerful modern day Porsches and you can mash the gas pedal in
2nd gear corners with no wheel spin at all. I've already driven the
GT1 car and it certainly would spin the wheels in real life if you
floored the gas pedal coming out of a 2nd gear corner. Oh well, aside
from these flaws, the game is still fun as hell.
MaX
For those of you that are playing with a pre-release version (warez) of the
game, keep in mind that a lot of times the audio is re-compressed when ripped
to keep the file sizes down.
I believe someone here that has the full retail release version mentioned a big
difference in sound quality.

I have the same problem with the sound. It is very muffled and seems
low quality compared to the rest of the game. I'm using a MX300 with
the 2048 drivers.

Remember, when driving with the in-car view, the engine might appear
to sound muffled, but it's because they've modeled driving inside a
car with the windows up. If you select bumper cam, the engine is much
louder, as it would be if you were strapped to the bumper.

OK, what about if a person doesn't really care for Porches one way or
the other, but just wants a fun racing game where the CPU cars don't
cheat?
From what I've gathered, NFS:PU sounds like the first simulation-heavy
NFS they've created. 'Cept maybe the first NFS, that wasn't bad...
As long as the CPU cars don't float around and perform impossible
turns, I think I might enjoy this one.

No, as far as I can tell they use the same physics model as I do. They
even make mistakes (spinning out) and get into accidents sometimes.

Well, IMHO, maybe for the opponents, but look at the police and the
traffic cars ...
Also, the cars are too slippy ! The road are too wide , so the feelings of
speeds is very very bad ! I realy prefer the PSX version ! ( minus the GFX
);
The AI drive just like you do. I have looked in my rear view mirror just in
time to see a AI car hit a fence and flip or spin out. They make mistakes
just like we do.

I always thought the traffic in the original NFS was reasonably well
behaved, and the mistakes they made (sleepily pulling out to pass without
"checking their mirrors") were believable. Things degraded and eventually
we ended up with the pickup trucks and station wagons of NFS3 smoking their
tires in lurid drifts at every corner. On the other hand, it was good for a
laugh.

Traffic car bumps each other, sometimes get stucks in the wrong side off the
road :o)
Sure ... maybe more than we do :o)
