Ordered David Noonan's GPL Converter today. (Easy if you follow
instructions how-to in this NG).
First of all, Hats off to Mr. Noonan ! And to the on-line store.
It was send to me within' 1 hour !
Anyway, converted the Nascar tracks and took a few laps to try 'm.
Of course, my drivin' sucked as usual in GPL :-) but it suddenly
hit me. Would it be too much to say that this could be a pretty
good 'preview' of "the feel" if ("if "!) N4 is gonna be equipped with
the GPL engine ?

Remember that even if N4 has the GPL engine, the cars will drive
differently. Different type of cars in a different age.
The behind the scene physics would be the same (all the calculations, etc)
but the driving feel of the cars should be different. At least I would hope
so

1 hour? It's been 22 hours for me and still nothing but a "confirmation of
shipment", anyone else still waiting?

I don't know whether there's anything to it or not, but I ordered mine
earlier today and had to do it by using United Kingdom rather than US in my
address. It occurred to me later that doing this might cause problems with
credit card approval since the address was wrong. When I read that the
problem had been solved, I cancelled my original order and re-ordered using
the correct address. Still hasn't arrived though but it's only been a
little while.

while those in GPL are mid engined, the hypothetical N4 Taurus (for example)
would feel a lot different from the GPL Eagle, IMO. The cars in GPL only
weigh half as much as well which further warps the comparison.
That said, practicing the tracks in GPL won't go amiss by way of experience
with the model, if previously you didn't spend much time on it.

It really took just one hour. Didn't expect that, though.
The website states they will try to send in the next 24 hours...
Guess i got lucky for a change :-)

The cars are completly different.
It wasn't my intetion to compare it all 1:1, though.
I just experienced a totally different feel on the ovals (and road courses),
guess i got a little carried away... :-)

Yup...I heard about it very early, but I only have a confirmation.

In a rear engined car (some Porsches and all original VW Beetles) the engine
sits behind the rear axle.

By most people's definition of the terms, GPL cars are *MID* engined.
"Rear engined" usually refers to a vahicle in which the engine is located
behind (or partially overhangs) the rear axle.

Sorry...slight correction. Please note that those in GPL are *REAR* engined.
They were never referred to (apart from yourself) as "mid-engined".

I agree with your view, Jan but I also see from where Leaky (?) is
coming.....if I reach out and pluck a period magazine or book off my shelf
in front of me, the references are to "rear", not "mid". Even "The Cooper
Story" refers to "rear".
Dave Friedman's "Indianapolis, Racing Memories" states on the fly leaf
".......including the most noteworthy Lotus-lead switch from front- to
rear-engined cars,......."
I think the use of the term during the sixties is generally to differentiate
between having an engine in *front* of the driver and one that is to the
*rear* of the driver, rather than the more technically-accurate definition
that you have used, Jan.

Aha! All is now explained then, Oh Engineer of The North! :-)
I (electrician and draftsman being my original lines of work) also use those
highly technical terms as well as a couple of others....."whatsit" and
"doover" being two that come immediately to mind.
