NFS Porsche Unleashed retail versus warez and handling
rrevved compared his retail copy of NFS Porsche Unleashed with the warez version, finding file differences explained by Safedisc protection. Players praised its handling and price but debated the lack of throttle steer and the very wide roads. Barton Brown recalled how narrow Mosport and Watkins Glen were in the 1960s.
Automated summary.
Do you know if this works in Win2000? I have ordered it and am wondering
if I will need to install Win98 in a dual boot to play it. I am prepared to
do that as I simply love this game, but I would really love it if it worked
in Win2K.

Tim, according to the specs on the box, Win98, NT, and Win2000
are supported.

It doesn't have a 904, 917,906, or 908, but there is a *lot* of Porsche

O.K., having just received my Retail copy of NFS: Porsche
Unleashed from the friendly FedEx guy, I made a comparison to
the WAREZ version I have been playing with for a couple of days.
Looking in only the main folder of NFS:PU, here are some of the
discrepancies I found. Note the file sizes:
WAREZ : PORSCHE EXE 2,129,965 03-16-00 11:05p Porsche.exe
RETAIL: PORSCHE EXE 249,119 03-13-00 2:52p Porsche.exe
In the RETAIL and don't exist *at all* in WAREZ:
CLCD32 DLL 27,648 03-13-00 2:52p clcd32.dll
CLCD16 DLL 6,784 03-13-00 2:52p clcd16.dll
00000409 016 107,318 03-13-00 2:52p 00000409.016
00000409 256 215,478 03-13-00 2:52p 00000409.256
PORSCHE ICD 2,129,965 03-13-00 2:52p PORSCHE.ICD
CLOKSPL EXE 177,152 03-13-00 2:52p clokspl.exe
etc., etc.
There are over 1600 files in the other sub-folders.
I suspect they contain other differences.
When I run the retail version, here is what I noticed
*immediately*. S-M-O-O-T-H-E-R. Before, with the WAREZ,
when I maxed it ALL out at 1024x768 I would get a little
choppiness, at times, on my PIII-600/Voodoo3.
Not any more.
The interior engine sound is much more clear and stronger in
the Retail version. In the WAREZ version it was weak and I had
to screw around with volume controls in the game to make it
stronger than everything else. Then, when I would go to a
replay, in the external view is was way too loud.
Not now... :)
I am VERY happy with this thing and if you like Porsches
(who doesn't), then rush to your nearest Electronics
Boutique and hand the clerk $29.95.
You too will be a happy camper. Trust me on this.
Bye-bye, warez version, you have now been sent to
the pirate graveyard.

See above.
Porsches, at least the older ones, don't understeer very much.

FYI, The difference between the size of the EXE files comme from the
Safedisk protection (it also uses the clokspl.exe and clcxxx.dll files)
Porsche.ICD = Porsche.exe (safedisc reads the ICD file as an EXE)

Can you drive a 904 in this one? I've always wanted to since I read Henry N
Manney's account of the TargaFlorio races in early '60s edition of
RoadTrack. Theres just something *really* nice about the 904.
David
FWIW - If you look at the tracks in GPL, then look at photo's of the real
tracks (or even footage of a race), you'll notice that in GPL they seem
almost twice as wide. One track that really proved this to me is Mosport.
I watched a Formula Ford (I think) race at Mosport and couldn't get over how
narrow the track looked compared to GPL.
Guess it just makes for better gaming if you give the virtual driver a
little more room...

One thing that is fun is to set opponents to 0 and just take
your car out for a leisurely drive in the country. Last night
I got the trainer, unlocked the cars and tracks, cranked
up the resolution and drove around in 'my' 550 RSK.
Some of the scenery is *spectacular* to say the very least.
My only complaint to this point is that EA chose to not let
us set time of day. I wonder if that is something that could
be hacked?
Maybe EA is on to something here. They could do
Ferrari Unleashed, followed by Mercedes Unleashed,
followed by Corvette Unleashed...etc. They could charge
$30 for each new featured car/track set.
With the quality shown by PU, I would buy every
damned one of them.. hehe.

NFSPU costs less than NFS:HS did up until recently (Best Buy still has
NFS:HS for $44, I believe - HA!), it plays better than NFS:HS or NFS3
EVER did, and it may well THE definitive tin-top sports car simulator.
The physics "feel" even better than in Viper Racing, IMO (same lively

Snetterton is darn tight :)
Rouen also. The Ring is quite narrow. Zandy is very realistic compared to
real-life track width. But you are right about Mosport (and I'll add
Watkins Glen), the track is probably around 10% larger than reality in terms
of track width. Like we care much. At least they don't invert elevations
or invent corners to patch their tracks like F1 2000 (just try the A1-Ring
to see).

Back to Thomas's point, though... While it is certainly true
that that rear-engine Porsches (prior to the late 80s) are best known
for their lift-off oversteer, one should be able to induce power-on
oversteer on the beefier Porsches. Try as I might, I can't get this
to occur on even the GT1-98 (~600bhp SHOULD be able to light up the
rear tires in 2nd gear, right?). For that matter, I'm not even able
to do proper donuts.
Other points: Contrary to what I said in an earlier post,
heavy braking DOES lock up tires. However, there seems to be little
penalty in doing so.
How much fun do these shortcomings take out of the game?
Let's just say the loss is measured in basis points. :-)

Unbelievably fun!Having been several times to both the Glen AND Mosport in the '60s (I
don't think you were born yet, Frankie), both were considerably narrower
than they are today -- especially the Glen, which got a massive re-do
from 1970 to 1972 (when they added the Anvil and widened everything).
Mosport was exceptionally rustic in the '60s, and rough as a cob.

It was, but in a slightly more canned way. They just didn't have the
CPU power back then.

Thanks for the information. But that won't stop me from loving those
tracks, even if too large compared to the reality of those days. It's still
very tight, especially on the Glen's backstretch when your racing them freak
F1 cars ;)

Yeah I was just thinking about NFS1 and the lift-off oversteer...
Funny, that had to be the ONLY game that ran fast on a P90 and still looked
good...

Oh yeah. A rear-engined car with a 3-liter flat-six engine screaming a
wonderful sound just sucks :)
<end sarcasm>
You sound like one of my friends...at least he was like that until recently.
Now he bought a Bug. I imagine soon he'll upgrade to a Porsche 911...
Though I think other brands would be very very cool as well...i.e. a Ferrari
one, a Lamborghini one, GM (Camaros, Corvettes, and even Caprices), Ford
(Mustangs, Cobras, GT40s, and even a Pinto crash-test :D ), Mopar (Hemis,
Vipers, 'Dodge' Stealth)...the list could go on...

I agree- its a steal for $29.95, and not even worth the time to download a
'warez' version.
Good going EA for keeping prices down- you'll sell more product this way,
and keep your followers happy.
