Balanced F1 2000 opinions without GPL bashing

Lorne Glustein posted a balanced view of F1 2000, enjoying its online racing despite weak AI and framerate issues, and urged respect between GPL fans and fans of other sims. Others agreed, while noting that most GPL fans were reasonable. They discussed the lack of online qualifying and the realism of crowd sizes.

A small counter-rant... :) While you may find some GPL-Nazis, I think the vast majority of GPL fans are pretty reasonable and helpful. And, as we have seen, the non-GPL community has enough anti-GPL-Nazis to balance them. :) I find it interesting that you base your conclusions on GPL on only a passing experience with it (and you really need a machine capable of sustaining 30+ fps to begin to appreciate it)). If I had a nickel for every "I finally tried GPL and it's amazing!" post, I'd be rich. It usually takes 2-3 weeks of GPL to "get it". Give it a serious try, and I think you may change your tune a bit. Also, speaking of wanting online qualifying in F1-2000... If you got into GPL and ran in the GPLWS league, you could have had sessions like this at Monza... 1 N. Canning EAG 1:28.55 2 A. Hine EAG 1:28.64 3 A. Bjrnstad EAG 1:28.78 4 B. If close, competitive racing against real opponents isn't fun, I don't know what is! And that's just the Lites, the lowest/slowest of GPLWS's 3-4 divisions. :) "But in a way, fear is a big part of racing, because if there was nothing to be frightened of, and no limit, any fool could get into a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark

(sorry if I sent this twice. Looks like it didn't go thru the first time.) No opinion on F1-2000 here. Haven't tried it. However, I for one, am very glad that people in this NG bitch and whine about the games they don't like. And the more profanity they use, the better. :o) That's the way it should be. I can't stand reading "professional" reviews of games. They're rediculous. They are always far, far, far too enthusiastic about any given game. Just speculating here, but you see, the game producers are not going to send a reviewer a game if they think said reviewer is going to say bad things about it. So it's in the reviewer's interest to say very nice things about a game every chance they get. So it's pretty sweet to have a place where I can find out about all the ugly, nasty, obnoxious problems with any particular game before I buy it. God bless r.a.s. BTW, if you take offense to some goofball's scathing remarks about your favorite sim, you just might be taking this whole thing too seriously. -A Lorne Glustein <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:hEXC4.1736$[email hidden]... > First off, I would like to say that I have an Athlon 750, TNT2U, 128Mb > PC133, IBM 27.3Gb system, and I own [MANY] games that will not run theway > I would like them to run @1024 w/ maxed detail settings... First off, I would like to say that I have an Athlon 750, TNT2U, 128Mb PC133, IBM 27.3Gb system, and I own [MANY] games that will not run the way I would like them to run @1024 w/ maxed detail settings... Therefore if I want the game to run as smooth as it can I need to turn some stuff down.... this is nothing new for me (am I the only one ?). While I agree there may be some issues with bad code in F1-2000... I`m happy EA chose to give us the best possible graphics, rather than toning them down so that an average system could run the game with everything maxed out. I think the "feel" of the F1-2000 car is great.... I have no idea how close it is to a real F1 car but I know I have a lot of fun driving it. The AI is the main problem with this sim and I dont think there is any doubt about that. For the life of me I dont know how they could ship a game with this AI and I dont think I will ever be able to figure it out either. I hope there is a patch.... but if not I`ll be more than happy to do my racing online. I just finished racing a guy located on the other side of the world and he was using 56k dial-up (I have cable). The game ran just like it does OFFline, and let me tell ya...it was FUN. Also, having all the cars\drivers\tracks from the just underway real F1 season [right out of the box] is nothing short of fantastic (even if the tracks are not "100%" true copies of the real tracks, they are close enough for me). Now I dont want to start anything up..... but I must admit that when I read many of the threads in RAS I feel that many people seem to forget that "fun" is what it`s really all about (is anyone getting paid to drive a sim ?...maybe a few, but not many I`m sure). Some people seem to act as if they drive for the top team (GPL)...they have made it to the top...and any other sim (or sometimes even sim driver) is worthless. I dont think this is the purpose of RAS and it would be nice to see more of a coming together of people talking about why they have fun with one sim over another and not so much looking for ways to cut someone down.....IMO having fun and sharing info is what it`s all about. It`s almost as if some GPL players feel that they are actually driving a "real" car and anything else (so far) is just a computer game....and I hardly believe there is that much of a difference. I tried GPL when it first came out ....and yeah I was impressed with it, but it didnt make me feel that sims like GP2 and F1RS were worthless... far from it. Btw, at the time GPL came out it didnt run that well on my system, so I didnt get right into it....but I do plan to give it another try in the near future. Ok rant over :) I think there have been many lame attempts at making F1 sims in the past (I dont need to list the names) and I did not have fun with any one of them (if others did, all the power to ya, thats what it`s all about). I feel F1-2000 offers enough "sim fun" to place alongside GP2, F1RS, and MGPRS as one of the best modern F1 sim`s made to date.... and if the AI is fixed [I believe] it will jump to the top of the podium in a heartbeat. Does that mean I think it`s "the best"..... maybe for me it will be.... but I sure wont try to tell someone that likes another sim that they are wasting their time with it. As a side note..... I have a feeling that GP3 is going to be a great Sim....and I think that many people are thinking the same thing (God knows they have been working on it long enough). But without a fast simple (good working) way to play online....it might not win me over...It`s also not going to have FF support. . . These are just a few more reasons I feel F1-2000 is worth looking into if you are sick of playing GP2, F1RS, MGPRS, etc. All the best, Lorne

I agree with everything you said. The self proclaimed experts on RAS need to take a breath and step back and realise it's about the fun, enjoyment of driving-racing.I picked up F1-2000 today and am enjoying the hell out of it,despite what has been said.Remember the saying,"opinions are like asses",well it sure is true! Hey Guys, Good point James... I would also love to be able to qualify online, that would really be amazing. I actually think all of my F1 online dreams would have be answered had they implemented that feature. I wonder why they chose not to include it as an online option....seems to me like it wouldnt have been very hard to do. Is this something you guys feel could be fixed/added by a 3rd party, or do you think it will need to be adressed with a patch ?. A patch is going to be needed for the AI [thats for sure!!] I just dont see any way they can avoid it, so lets hope they fix/add some other things at the same time. It`s a real shame (for us and the developers) that they got the AI all wrong (it`s like the AI drivers are on drugs - how did it ship like that ? ) because had the AI been spot on I dont think this sim would be getting nearly as many negative comments as it has been getting... With the AI drivers sucking the way they do I think it`s very understandable why many people get a negative first impression of this sim (it`s hard to get a positive first impression of a "sim" when you would sware that all the top drivers in the world you are racing against are drunk ;). Also, some people are talking about how some of the tracks are way to dark.... I`ll admit that I wish Monaco had a more upbeat look... but I`m happy that each track has it`s "own look", because with many sim`s I`ve found that with the exception of layout all the tracks look almost the same (so I can live with a dark dreary Monaco, I might even start to like it ). On a positive note there are a few other things I have noticed about F1-2000 that I think are worth mentioning. This was brought up in another thread... but have you noticed the amount of spectators in the stands changes depending on what day\time you are at the track. Another thing I like is that your head moves forward and backward in relation to braking\acceleration forces... I think this helps to make for a very realistic driving sensation. The only other sim I know of (correct me if I`m wrong) that had anything like this was CPR....and in that sim I think it was a good thing they had an option to turn it off ;) Anyway..... if anyone would like to hook up for some online racing my ICQ# is:17082631 I should warn ya that I`m only running the Brazil track right now.... but next week I`m off to Imola =o) All the best guys, Lorne

SCGT had serious AI problems itself. Too aggresive, too clueless on the same corner, lap after lap. Still, while frustrating, I enjoy it to this day. If it is an AI aggresiveness problem or similar, can it be improved by changing the drivers' aggression and ability ratings as offered in SCGT? Maybe I'll find out...if I can ever get any of the newer D3D games working with my C300a/450, Banshee, dx7a system working, grrrr... GP3? I sure hope Crammond bags that computertime/realtime engine (my #1 diatribe).

When I was at the Montreal GP two years back, the entire place was jam-packed for all practices. Well, at least the general admission areas were 10+ deep. Maybe the high-rollers in the Gold seats didn't come till later. And this was a year when Villeneuve was off-pace. So... Absolutely unrealistic! Can't believe they blew this! I'm returning it! BTW, :-)

Well said... Yes the AI in F1 2000 suck.. but I haven't raced AI in about 2 years.. no point. The Multiplayer in F12k is GREAT!!.. the code is. but the lack of practise session or qualifying session kinda sucks... Hopefully they can fix that witha patch... we'll c Other than that... I was only pointing out that this is something a little different and IMO adds to the effect of making you feel like you are at a real event..... In most other F1 games the stands are either 100% full or 100% empty. . . Hey Jeff, I know what you`re saying, and I agree with you. I should have gone into more detail in my original post, because as I re-read it I can see that it would be easy for some people to get the wrong idea. I know for a fact that many..... in fact> MOST "GPL people" (cant think of a better term right now ..lol) are great guys that are very helpful and fun to talk with. I was only trying to point out that I think some GPL`ers (that better ;) have let this sim go to their heads.... they are on some kind of power trip that I have yet to figure out. Anyway.... you are right, I should try GPL again. Like I said, I was very impressed with it the first time I tried it, but at that time I didnt have the system to run it. I think the reason I dont give it another try on my new system is because I know that it`s a very demanding game/sim.... and although I know I would find that rewarding, I also know that I would be starting at the bottom with so many people so far ahead of me. I also like to play about 5 or 6 different games these days.... so I would not be able to devote that much time to GPL (and I know I would need to spend a lot of T I M E with it to do well at it) . But just for the sake of seeing exactly what it`s like on a fast system I plan to install it again, and who knows.... maybe I`ll never wana stop :) All the best, Lorne Jeff Vincent <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > On Sat, 25 Mar 2000 04:54:37 GMT, "Lorne Glustein" <[email hidden]> > wrote: > > >Now I dont want to start anything up..... but I must admit that when Iread > >many of the threads in RAS I feel that many people seem to forget that"fun" > >is what it`s really all about (is anyone getting paid to drive a sim > >?...maybe a few, but not many I`m sure). It's so nice to hear some reasonable people rendering their honest opinion of a game, and not letting their egos get involved. I visit this site looking for opinions on what is fun and worth buying, but sometimes the personal arguments get in the way of dispensing good information concerning the merits of a game without regards to the available competition. Afterall, does a Lexus LS400 rate as a bad car just because you prefer a Mercedes or BMW. I don't think so.

I can run GPL at 36fps(most of the time) at 640x480 if I turn off most of the graphics settings.(hold on, let me check...) Ok, I have object, wall, car, driver, and track trxture on. Crowds, trees, beveled tires on. Cars&track in mirror, trackside objects - all(I need SOME brake markers). The detail slider it between the 'L' in detail and the 'B' in bias. Aside from the sad fact that most people get better fps with less, will this rig really run F1-2000 well enough to bother? Eldred -- Tiger Stadium R.I.P. 1912-1999 Own Grand Prix Legends?
