... as a simmer-want-to-be-but-I-ain't-got-the-skills guy, I lurk here from
time to time to get the skinny on the new driving games. While I abhor
games like "Speedbusters", I find GPL a little, well, difficult. N3 and
Superbike are more my speed.
Anyway, my question: does NFS: PU dare to tread into "sim" territory.
While it obviously does not dare call itself an actual simulation, it seems
to have made the jump beyond simple arcade action. Does this seem the case
with you guys, the owners of the thousand dollar wheels?

Is NFS Porsche Unleashed a sim, and EA's CJ Martin drops in
A self-described casual player asked whether NFS Porsche Unleashed crossed into sim territory, and most said it came close. EA Baltimore producer CJ Martin joined in. This led to speculation, which he would not confirm, that his team would make F1 2001 in-house, while others cited reports that ISI was hiring for F1 2001. Posters also noted how much calmer the newsgroup was than the flight-sim groups.
With CJ Martin (EA Baltimore)

It WAS NOT a thousand dollars...it was $999.95 plus tax...hehe Just a little
humor to liven things up :)
But to be serious NFS:PU does tread into the "sim" genre...NFS4 could have but
in the end it didnt. I think we MIGHT actually see the NFS series be where it
SHOULD be in the physics department by the time NFS:6 or 7 is released. But i
have been wrong before...

If Viper Racing qualified as a sim, I don't see why NFS: PU can't. It's
fun and while physics aren't on the same plain as GPL, I like the
physics in NFS: PU better than N3. If you enjoy it, go for it....

You might be on the right track. The series is strong and popular enough for
such a strategy to be implemented.

Sad as it may be, that feature probably would have made gpl a huge

Thanks Gregor. My online presence predates my entry in to the computer game
biz by several years. While most of my...umm...passion has been focused on
my first love (combat flight simulations), I'm also proud to call myself a
charter member of the rec.aviation.military.naval newsgroup. As plastic
models is another of my hobbies, I spend a fair amount of time lurking in
the rec.models.scale newsgroup as well. Usenet is a powerful thing, and not
all of the groups have devolved to the level that the flight-sim group seems
to have.
As a game developer, I also find it informative to cruise the game
newsgroups from time to time to gain insights into the mood of the online
crowd in the various genres.

I'm a fan of many type of games; combat flight sims, racing sims and crpg's
to name a few genres. I tend to be in lurk-only mode on the non flight sim
groups however. Since someone mentioned the flight sim group over here, I
thought I'd chime in with my $.02.
As for the future, as usual, I have no comment. :-)

I see we have plenty of common interests (apart from the Navy, but
Slovenia practically has none so that may be the reason). It makes one
wonder what creates such an attitude in a newsgroup. This one has the
same order of magnitude of posts than the .flight-sim one, yet the
temeprature is much lower here.
One of the reasons may be that this NG is more international than the
flight-sim one, so English is not the first language of many posters
here (like myself). It's hard enough to cross this barrier for many, and
in schools one typically does not obtain the knowledge on how to flame
in English ;).
The other reason may be that combat sims are about fighting, while
racing is still a sport and the attitude is somewhat different.

If only more developers did spread their horizons this way, the games
would be more complete for it. One must be careful a bit in these times
when the computer gaming is not a subculture anymore but is going
global. The online community is still mostly the hardcore gamers. While
listening to these one can cater to the hardcore market in a good way,
but we've seen that this is not what the mass market is usually after,
and the publishers might thus not like that.
But what am I saying here, CJ, forget the last couple of sentences, just
keep on reading the newsgroups :) .
Ant it appears that sometimes you seem more than happy to fuel this!
Don't worry, we'll find out soon enough ;).
