Reactions to ESPN's Dale Earnhardt movie '3'

Fans anticipated ESPN's Dale Earnhardt biopic '3' and then reviewed it. Opinions ranged from solid to generic, with criticism of its low budget, focus on personal life and factual liberties, and a report that Kerry Earnhardt said the scenes he watched were inaccurate.

I am really looking forward to watching ESPN's movie on Dale Earnhardt. However, I cringe at the movie ending up like "Driven" or "Days Of Thunder". I really hope that the movie will be a fair and great tribute to Earnhardt Senior and as good or better than the movie Grand Prix.
I somehow think Theresa Earnhardt and DEI would not allow that. -Larry David O. Since its is based on real people and real events I don't think you have to worry about any flying man hole covers. I'd still like to know how Sly and the other guy sot those cars started. I think you will be pleased at what was done. Remember how Barry Pepper portrayed Roger Maris in the movie 61? In my opinion he outdid himself. He did a great job. Lots of the filming was done in Kannapolis at an old millhouse similar to where Dale was raised. One note about the garage in the backyard, it is made out of foam! I was lucky to be in one of the shots. Dale and I were fishing buddies. I will tell you Barry Pepper talked to me and several of Dales friends and genuinely wanted to get it right. Barry is a class act, a genuine class act. I don't believe anyone could have done a better job. I think he did Dale right. You be the judge. "David O. I think we're going to like it, but got to keep in mind it'll be a 90 minute movie trying to cover Dale's life and done on a budget of only 7 million dollars.
Crap! I hate it when this happens! I have a "must go to" company Xmas party tomorrow night. I hope this ESPN movie will be replayed......my tape player is at the shop at the moment......dog gone it! TP

I'm sure that it'll be re-broadcast a number of times. In fact, the first replay will be at midnight (early on 12/12) Eastern Time. If it's anything like the recent Pete Rose movie, it'll be re-broadcast a lot. Check your ESPN2 and even your ESPN Classic listings.

Your tape player is at the shop? Are you kidding me? Nobody gets a tape player fixed. Go buy a stereo HIFI for $30 anywhere. Better yet get a tivo.

Wank-Mart probably sells em for 30-40 bucks. I havent used mine in ages. I think i last used it to tape the Daytona 500 a couple years ago when i went ice fishing. Pay for the shipping Tom, and i'll mail it to ya ! ;)

Who can stand to watch tape knowing that it was broadcast in HD? I don't like watching regular broadcasts, VHS sends me right up the wall. Don McCorkle
It wasn't a "great" movie, but was fairly well done. Although the guy they got to play Dale Sr. looked quite a bit like him, his mannerisms still lacked. He didn't have the bigger than life aura about him like Dale did. But let's face it.....I don't think there's an actor alive that could portray Dale. He was one of a kind. only 7 million.... {-P ESPN as a media outlet presenting a media movie had more than enough I think to at least present the facts straight. Don't get me wrong the movie was good and it made me cry. But, when you learn that something in the movie is presented as the way it happen and you find out later that is not the truthful way it happen. It kinda pisses you off when you were at least expecting to see the truth. To be honest, I thought it was more of a chick flick than a racing movie. It concentrated on his broken marriages, the relationships with his father, Niel Bonnet, Theresa, and his kids, and his animosity toward D.W. and J.D. Stacy. How about the glory years with Childress and Kirk Schelmerdine? (Never heard him mentioned once.) He was as close to Childress as he was to Bonnet, but they never explored that. How about the difficulty of winning seven championships, and all the disappointments at the Daytona 500? How about his success as a businessman and team owner? I realize they can only squeeze so much into 80 minutes or so, but I think they could have done a better job. Also, I wasn't thrilled with Pepper's performance. Earnhardt was the cock of the walk, fiesty and in your face, with a penchant for joking around, not the moody introspective man as portrayed. YMMV George Adams "All good fishermen stay young until they die, for fishing is the only dream of youth that doth not grow stale with age." ---- J.W Muller

I think a young Robert Duvall would have done a good job playing Dale Sr.. On Sun, 12 Dec 2004 22:12:23 GMT, TW <[email hidden]> wrote:

Using the excuse of "creative license" to not really present the truth... Movie - Dale Jr. running off and that is how Dale, Sr. met Teresa.... is that really how it happened? That is not how I've heard it happen. I been told Sr. met Teresa when she was 16 years old through her family. And, then meeting that one guy with the big opportunity the same day Sr. met Teresa... Movie - Dale Jr. in Victory Lane when his father won the 500 Jr. flipped his Busch car the day before and was all stode up the next day. Dale Sr. from victory lane brought up about Jr. not being able to be in victory lane due to being sore from the day before. And, how was Ralph found... I've now heard three different stories with that.... Martha finding him in the garage, Martha finding him in the kitchen, and now the movie Dale Sr. finding him in the garage. then, another, Dale Jr. being the one that told Sr. of Neil's Death in 1994 when Jr. himself has stated he didn't start going to Daytona at all until around 1996/1997... And, to think that Sr. was in the motorcoach with Teresa instead of out on the track practicing like the rest of drivers....hmmm.. when the rest of the movie racing was coming before his another wives... yeah, I have to agree.... being a chick... a chick movie more then a real docudrama... "docudrama" where one expects events to be presented exactly like they happened is what this chick was really looking for; History with acting..... not all the "Hollywood" twisted stuff.. ugh! :-P after being a fan for 30 years, it was easy to see lots of little details that was totally messed up.... {-P RindaLynn "RHinNC" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:s96vd.4966$[email hidden]...

One of my favorites was the superspeedway sound effects during the short track scenes.

You be the judge. <laughter> "Kerry's response to "3": In an interview with Brandon Mudd and Tony Hubert from The SpeedZone on 590 The Fan, KFNS, in St. Louis (www.kfns.com), Kerry Earnhardt said he watched about 20 minutes of the movie "3," the ESPN-produced bio pic on the life of his father, Dale Earnhardt. Kerry said he was disappointed with the way the movie portrayed his father and said most of the scenes he saw were factually inaccurate. "Maybe if you're a race fan who doesn't know much about the history of the sport or know much about my dad, they would like it. My dad, and anyone who knew him knows this, was a very happy man and loved to play jokes on people and have a good time. He wasn't the person the movie said he was. And there were a lot of things in that movie that didn't happen or didn't happen the way (the movie depicted it)." Earnhardt went on to say he was never personally contacted by the movie's producers and said that if ESPN would have contacted him or other members of the Earnhardt family, then perhaps the movie would have been more true to life.(KFNS.com)(12-15-2004)"
