Re: F1 2000 - ho -hum

Mixed early verdicts on F1 2000

A new owner was lukewarm about F1 2000's stuttering and speed. Others offered gearing and graphics tweaks such as enabling mip-mapping in the player file. Alison Hine called it the most enjoyable modern F1 sim yet, which swayed some readers, while critics pointed to inaccurate tracks such as Monza's Parabolica, the lack of weather and aggressive AI. Iain Mackenzie suggested her opinion carried weight because of GPL hero-worship, which others disputed.

Do I like it? ho -hum. I don't know yet. I've a AMD 700 with 128Mb RAM and still at the start of the race from the grid it stutters. I keep getting passed even at hockenheim with lowest wing settings and the best gearing. It seems as though when 6th gear is selected the engine struggles to accelerate let alone 7th! I'm pushing on the 200 mark and the red light for 7th comes on just at the end of the longest straight. Anyone else finding this? Plus anyone had any bad weather? Roll on GP3, I'm sorry I doubted you. KP

The AI drivers do a lot of things that good on-line drivers do not. I have not raced the AI in GPL since the first few weeks that I had the game, so it is difficult to get back into it in F1 2000. The biggest disappointment so far is in the graphic performance, and what happens to it when I dial the options down far enough to get an acceptable frame rate. I have a PIII-600, Voodoo 3000 AGP, and SBLive, and the only way to get a driveable frame rate in a race is to completely turn off the mirrors. This simply should not be the case! Even at this setting, in 800x600, the graphics have a sort of jaggy, shimmering effect that is very annoying to me. The sounds, especially in a race, are also a real joke. On the upside, I am starting to get the feel of the cars and for where I am on the track. Maybe the initial weird look of the cockpit view was mostly because I've been driving a skinny-tired '67 car for the last year and a half! Maybe I can get in some decent runs at Imola before this coming weekend. Doug Gordon Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.

The cars are easy to toss around, but you aren't at the real limit if you are doing that, and you aren't going fast. Things really get tough when you start doing races, and tire wear becomes a factor. Even running very conservatively, I have trouble getting 15 laps out of a set of tires. You definitely have to drive carefully to run a GP.

I'm starting to get really frustrated with the AI. They are just too willing to make contact, which makes it hard to run a full length race. I may go to hotlapping and online racing only if the AI doesn't get fixed soon. Unfortunately, I think that ISI will have to do the fixing in terms of lowering the aggression of the AI, because the system is too complex for simple hacks. > I'm delighted with the arrival of F1 2000. I agree totally. I got F1 2000 on Friday and am having a blast with it. I feel it's the most enjoyable modern-era F1 sim I've tried yet. Blows away F1RS/MGPRS2 in a lot of areas. The tracks are modeled very well, and the cars are really fun and very challenging to drive. I thought the tire model was too forgiving at first. The cars seemed a bit too easy to drive if I didn't really lean on the throttle, but when I started pushing harder, I found I got the same kind of nasty sudden snap oversteer that I see the real F1 drivers coping with on TV. Of course, they cope a lot better than I do! I think that ISI has done a fantastic job updating the SCGT game engine to simulate F1 cars so well. It does have some limitations, and there are a number of detail changes I'd like, but overall it drives very well. The game design is excellent too. I had problems with frame rate too (C-366 @550, Voodoo3 3500, SB Live! Value, LWFF, PDPI L4, CH Pedals) but after cutting back to 800x600 and judiciously tweaking the graphics settings, I've got it to run totally smoothly when I'm driving solo (test sessions) and acceptable frame rate in races. I've driven against the AI at a number of tracks. I must confess I can't understand what people are griping about regarding the AI. If I turn them up to 100%, they simply disappear into the distance, but I'm pretty sure that's as it should be; I don't expect to be able to keep up with Schummi and co. anyway. If I crank them down to a speed I can cope with, I can have a great time racing with them. Their straightline and cornering speeds don't seem to be terribly out of synch with mine. So far I've just used the "grip" setup, so maybe if I start tweaking, things will change. I do wish there were weather effects. I'll rent a Playstation copy to see how I like that, but to be honest, having Force Feedback on the PC is so nice - and the F1 2000 FF implementation is decent - that I don't expect I'll like the Playstation version better. Plus the graphics look so much better on PC's these days. I'm delighted with the arrival of F1 2000. It's wonderful to have such an enjoyable modern-era F1 sim available. I'm really looking forward to running the tracks in F1 2000 before and after each real race this season. Great job, ISI and EA Sports! Hi Alison, It`s great to hear you like F1-2000.... I seem to like it more and more all the time (and I loved it to begin with ..lol). I only wish they would have implemented qualifying online and a way for your best lap times to be displayed\saved in replays. . . I have followed your web site for a few years now, and I just wanted to say I think you have done a great job with it. Sim racers of all skill levels and interests can learn something there.... it really is a one of a kind site :) Anyway, I`m building up my ICQ contact list with people that enjoy racing F1-2000 online. Thank you for this post, Alison! I don't have F1 2000, it didn't reach Slovenia yet (perhaps today, keeping my fingers crossed!). I read lots of bad opinions about it, but overall I did get the impression that the things that matter to me are done rather well. I just wanted an opinion by someone whom I know to really be in the know of sims, but to get yours was more than I hoped for! Perhaps you should have posted this a few days later, though, now I have no idea how I will be able to wait for the sim. -Gregor

I agree- it's fun. But I have a few issues: 1- No weather! 2- Graphics are OK, nothing more. Certainly not up to the standard-setting beauty of SBK2000 or RC2000 for that matter. 3- Cars are unsteerable from the chase mode. Control becomes inexplicably mushy. Also, the desingers (by choice?) saw fit not to include any info, like currently selected gear, on this screen. 4- I'm told several of the tracks are inadequately modelled. On the other hand, the racing feel seems spot on- at least from the cockpit. And I think all the gnashing of teeth over the frame rate is unwarranted. The game runs acceptably at 800x600 on my: P350 128 Ram S3 540 * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet's Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet - Free!

I know it's been done to death on other posts, but I really don't understand the problem with the graphics. I run at 1024x768 with mirrors on (but detail off), texture high, etc. at frame rates of around 20 even at the start of the race. Turn off shadows, dust, and smoke. Try texture at medium, draw distance at medium etc. It is possible to make this sim look good and run smoothly. (I have 500 Athlon , 128mb, and V3 3000.) N3 has never worked for me online. I would still play it a little bit if it did. It's so out-dated now though in terms of the physics model that it's just not fun anymore. It literally puts me to sleep. :) I've always been more of an open wheel guy, but for a long time N2 was where the online action was at, and my competitive nature got the best of me :) Road courses have always been more interesting, though, and GPL online has ruined N2/N3 for me. If N4 turns out to be good, I may be back :) Don Burnette wrote:

As I wrote in a separate post, I just realized that my BIOS was recently reset to 66MHz instead of 100MHz, meaning that I've been losing at least 33% of my CPU & memory performance. Exactly, quite a nice game except for the horrendously aggressive AI controlled drivers who can't seem to get enough of smashing my car off of the road.

Pat, I knew this was going to happen as soon as Alison contributed! It's all part of the 'GPL is God' syndrome which pervades this group. Alison (and no disrespect is intended to her) is regarded almost as deity on this group purely because of her GPL site. Don't take it personally, although I'm sure you won't. I would just like to say that Alison's contributions to the sim community exceed the involvement with GPL. There are plenty of other things on her side, too, and I am sure you checked them out. It's not merely because of her GPL contributions, although these are responsible for me checking her site in the first place, but her spirit that makes me appreciate her opinion. I also know it may seem that GPL is being blindly followed in this newsgroup, and perhaps this may even be true to some extent. But the (sad ?) truth is that there has yet to be a sim that will top GPL, not only in realism but also immersion and multiplayer. -Gregor

Um. . . counting down the thread since Alison posted, I see two people who's opinions seem to have been partly swayed. Hardly an avalanche. I think it's more a reflection of the fact that many here consider AH to be rather level-headed about the whole thing. She doesn't get involved in the GPL wars in this ng. --DK "Iain Mackenzie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:x%fG4.41$[email hidden]... > Pat, > I knew this was going to happen as soon as Alison contributed! That's a matter of opinion. GPL is a fantastic sim which I have played since its release, but there is life outside it, and F12K is an excellent representation of modern F1 racing. Whoa there big fella :) I have the utmost respect for both Pat and Allison, and value both of their opinions greatly. I don't regard Alison as a deity, mainy cause I'm just a country boy and don't know what that means - but - I do know of the efforts she has put in to the sim racing community, and know from reading her reviews in the past she is very honest and forthcoming about them, good or bad.
