Should I buy F1 2000

A buyer asked whether F1 2000 was worth 34 pounds and when GP3 would arrive. Alexander Marx and ymenard criticised track accuracy, sound and AI, while Iain Mackenzie and Greg Cisko defended it vigorously. The thread degenerated into bickering, with framerate reports varying widely by hardware. GP3 was expected in late summer.

Nonsense! A total exaggeration! There have been several very positive posts about the accuracy of some tracks. The***pit view is perfect. The sound is a realistic representation of a modern F1 engine. Do you ever watch (and listen) to a Grand Prix these days? Complete rubbish! It worked OOTB for me and my Ferrari FF wheel. Again, nonsense. It needs a little tweaking to get it right for your system, but your comments are way over the top. I don't have this problem. Usually the only problem is on the first couple of corners, which is normal for a race. Like GPL? Iain

If you have very fast CPU you can race with 5 AI all graphics option Max. Hotlapping is ok with slower CPU. It's really good sim. GP3 is not out before July(i think it's not out before September). -Jani Kankaanp- "Joe Murphy" <[email hidden]> kirjoitti viestiss news:ZKYG4.2172$[email hidden]... > Is it worth the 34.00.When is GP3 out? > >

Nothing like detailed reasoning to help out the confused poster wondering whether to part with his 34! "David G Fisher" also wrote "I give newcomers advise which encourages them to look at the positives of various sims, " So I guess "Yes" fits that concept. OTH some more info could be helpful F1-2000 appears to run like a dog (i.e. unplayable) on some systems, especially dependant upon graphics cards. There is a force feedback bug with the Guillemot wheel. The physics are not as cutting edge as might have been hoped. Despite the performance issues the graphics are not as state of art as some more recent releases RC2000, SBK2000 & the forthcoming Rally Masters. The AI appear quite well behaved. Racing against the AI on a system capable of running it is quite fun. Sound is pretty pathetic. Personally (dare I say) I prefer GPL. However as a modern day F1 sim it is probably king for a day. Whether it is worth 34 as a casual plaything before GP3 is another matter. Hopefully others here can expand on my limited findings to give a balanced view. Then some form of opinion can be made as to whether to part with 34 Cheers Tony

Well David you had a choice: Help out a fellow sim player with a valid question - Should he buy F1-2000 Or have yet another stab at your considered "GPL fan club" You chose the latter. As Andrew hadn't made the recent claim "I give newcomers advise which encourages them to look at the positives of various sims, " I considered your post the most ironic. I guess it is a naive hope that knowledgeable members of this group could get on with some constructive discussions and help rather than get embroiled in arguments. Let me indulge in one final opinion, which I hope you take the time to read: The GPL fan club is not a collective group. I can only speak for myself. I would LOVE a new racing sim that puts GPL on a dusty shelf. The day I bought GPL I also bought Colin Mcrae Rally. Since that we have had RC2000 and Rally Masters is due for release. Both of which I would argue have a place on the rally sims HD. CMR blown away in all departments - graphics, physics, sound, hardware support etc. That is what I have come to expect & desire - top sims last a year or so, to be blown away by the next generation. Where is the RC2000 equivalent in the racing sim genre? Hence the frustration as new sims come out - even if competent - that fail to capture the imagination and demand to played at the expense of all that has gone before it. Maybe expectations are too high - perhaps the racing genre has matured before the Rally sims & motorbike sims - such that a revolutionary product is beyond current production. I played F1GP so much - far more regularly than GPL - yet when Indycar came out I switched immediately - for me it was a step forward. I am not so engrossed with GPL that if a new sim comes out tomorrow which I think is better I shan't drop GPL. I don't believe the loyalty you perceive to Papyrus & GPL exists to the extent you believe. I am as fickle & selfish as joe public when it comes to computer games - probably more so cos I want the best & I want it now! I don't necessarily expect you to agree with me David, but I hope it goes someway to understanding why sometimes optimism turns to disappointment on this group. There is a passion here for great products which can overide rational discussion. F1-2000 is the classic case IMHO. The initial posts were so optimistic - it was great etc. Then it turned out not to be so great & the negative posts (sad ones like "It Sucks") were in abundance. Things settle down & there are good and bad posts now. It is not a case of being negative from the outset - just too damned optimistic IMHO. Cheers Tony "David G Fisher" wrote > And Tony Rickard wrote a post in which he: > > A. There is no guarantee. But, just as we knew Falcon 4.0 will be the best simply because it was Falcon 4.0, the same logic applies here. Now, let's just hope the bugs will not be there in GP3 :) . Iain, I definitely agree... I absolutely love GPL, it is an amazing game, however people who completely dismiss the new titles coming out are definitely missing out. F1 2000 is an excellent game in my opinion despite its faults (especially on Non-Intel platforms!) and should definitely be played religiously :). I have to disagree a bit. On my both machines (P200 and now PIII450) I had GP2 setup so that the occupancy was always below 100% which kept a consistent framerate. Only when things got realy hairy did the occupancy suffer. It is annoying that the laptimes were lower, but this did compensate for the effect that there is less control when a framerate is low, so it gave you a better (more realistic ?) chance. But it is something that kills multiplayer. Which, in an internet form, will not be included (perhaps for this reason?). -Gregor

Greg I agree with everything you say.... But...on my brothers AMD Machine (450MHz, 128Meg, Voodoo 3, SB 128) it is impossible to play, even on the lowest setting (in which it looks like Chequered Flag for the Speccy! - Who remembers that one??). I think that it has been tailored towards intel...probably as these were the development machines. Its quite depressing as we cant have a decent network race. Thanks for filling in the gaps - it was never intended (& this was hopefully clear) to be a definitive answer to the posters question. For sure F1-2000 is the best modern day sim. However, with recent advances in rally and motorbike sims I had hoped the next racing sim would be a major advancement over previous racing sims. We haven't had an open wheel for some time so expectations were high. Hence my comments on graphics, sound & physics. I think it is a tough call - there are a number here that love it - others that don't. I guess the best advice is try it - if it runs well on your system and you like - keep it. Otherwise return it. Without trying it & giving it some effort you may be missing out on a fun experience. As for the sound - yes I have been to Grand Prix. The sound is amazing - fierce, raucous, incredibly loud. The multiple downshifts were like fireworks exploding. Definately not conveyed in the external views in the replays (which I think is the poorest implementation due to weak sounds & stepped frequency changes). What I have not done is to ride in an F1 car with a helmet on to sample the sounds (I wish!). See my other post on F1 sim sound for my theory on sound :) Cheers Tony "Greg Cisko" wrote

Ideally I would like a good selection of auto sims Modern F1 racing Champ car Rally car Historical Touring car Single make Road car sims Car chase sims etc. Currently there is huge variance of quality which tends to make me favour one particular sim at this time. Hopefully this will change and the desire for a selection of similar quality sims will be realised. I do expect 2000 releases to be significantly better than 1998. This is what we are used to. I don't want to stop at a 1998 sim! Tony

Greg, How did you get out of that message that he said GP3 will be better? Re-read both messages closely. I saw two answers from GraDee, one for each question the original poster asked. Is it just me, or are there too many posts, recently, where someone reads too much into a post and responds inappropriately? I rarely post messages (mostly try to grab pertinent information for my viewing pleasure) but this type of knee-jerk response to a perfectly legitimate post has been really bugging me lately. Maybe everyone can tone down their passions just a little bit and be thankful for all the great driving sims/games we have to drive/play with... ;-) Sorry to be picking on just you Greg, as several others have been guilty of the same thing, but I just couldn't take it anymore! Frank is a trouble maker because he doesn't like the current crop of F1 sims? If Papyrus didn't exist, would that make NASCAR 2000 a great sim since it would be the best NASCAR sim by default? Would CPR then be regarded as the definitive CART sim since ICR2 never existed? Being the best of a sorry lot doesn't necessarily equate to excellence. Problem there is that you have to set details to the lowest common denominator. That is, you have to turn it down so you don't get a PO of significantly greater than 100% at the one or two hairy parts of the course (or start). Then you suffer with less details for the rest of the race where you otherwise could have had much higher detail if, IMHO, he made the "proper" engine choice. One solution is to just cut the detail level on-the-fly. >It is annoying that the laptimes were lower, but this did compensate for >the effect that there is less control when a framerate is low, so it >gave you a better (more realistic ?) chance. Yes in a way, but I still find it unacceptable. Sure, it is smoother allowing easier control. But it is also crawling along. Real racing is somewhat about timing. A variable timeclock kills this. One time through a turn, it is fast, next when crowded, slow. I've ranted on this subject for years, and it really is manageable (though still a stooopid choice) so I'll take a breather now :-)

Greg, My question was regarding your direct response to GraDee. It seems I must directly quote each post leading up to your inappropriate (IMHO) post in order for you to understand where I'm coming from. The original poster of the questions was Joe Murphy. His subject line was "F1 2000 should i buy it?" and the content of his message had the two questions... "Is it worth the 34.00.When is GP3 out?" Notice he asked when GP3 would be out. GraDee responded to Joe's post with the following: "If you want the most modern F1 sim then yes, this one is worth it. GP3 will be out late summer to early autumn it seems." Reading GraDee's post closely, you'll see that all he did was answer Joe's questions to the best of his knowledge... nothing more, nothing less. Because you seem to be on a crusade to defend any post that could possibly be negative toward driving sims/games that you like, you are guilty of jumping the gun on some posts that just answer questions without any depth of bias. Yes, others who have responded to Joe's questions have said some negative things about F1 2000, but if you just read the words in GraDee's response to Joe's questions, it's beyond me how you can get that he was saying GP3 will be better. He just answered the question of when GP3 would be out! You came back with "And why exactly do you think GP3 will be better? Because it is GP3????" Another case in point to the fact that you read too much into other people's posts... your response to me <below> assumes that I was commenting on your interpretation of more than one post under this subject/title. That's simply not true. Again, if you re-read my post word for word, I was only commenting/complaining about your response to GraDee. I specifically used the words "that message". Please stop trying to read people's minds, you're obviously not a psychic. Regards, Dave Ericson MomoBoy online JDB Racing Greg Cisko wrote:

Acutally, I don't think F1 has a savior... of course I'm partial to fenders and side-by-side bumper to bumper racing, not boring follow the leader racing. <ducking for cover now> :-) Just because you're on the defensive from several people voicing negative opinions about a game you love, that doesn't mean you have to attack any posts that don't praise that game. Sometimes people can give unbiased information to other people... it really does happen. Dave

I.E., no trees, no elevation changes, sparse track side objects, no clouds, and flat gray pavement. Otherwise, the game ran fine, and I thought that it was a graphically bare attempt. Because my drivers weren't that old, and everything else ran well, I hesitated doing the update. Now I have a far superior game to F1RS, IMHO. The impression of speed at Hockenheim is incredible.
