OK, I've tried using GPL and Carsound, but after doing so, I lose the nicer
'environment' sounds from the High Gear Soundpack that I have...the skids,
the hits, wind, etc etc. Yet without carsound, dropping in new engine
sounds doesn't seem to work...help!!!

I don't believe Carsound should have any impact on the non-car sounds. For
the cars, whether they have an effect depends on whether you have Carsound
installed and what the files are called. Carsound uses 3 letter file names -
bra.wav, brm.wav etc. whereas 'normal' GPL uses longer names - repco.wav,
brmh16.wav etc.Files with the wrong name won't have any effect but shouldn't
do any harm.

The
Volume of the engine wave file could be drowning out the other sounds.
Just open the engine wave file with Windows defaulted sound editing
application (can't remember what it's called) and lower the volume of the
wave file. Then see if you can hear the other sounds.
