F1 2000 - Should I buy it.

Papyrus fan asks whether to buy F1 2000

Dean Williams, a self-confessed Papyrus fan, asked whether to buy F1 2000. Alison Hine and others recommended it as the best modern F1 sim, while Michael Carver, ymenard and Remco Moedt listed weaknesses such as AI, replays, force feedback and the lack of multiplayer practice. The thread became heated, with Iain Mackenzie, Joe McGinn and Greg Cisko trading insults.

Racers, I need your help. Each time I go into Electronics Boutique, I see F1 2000 from EA Sports, and each time I leave without it. I need someone who has similar taste in sims to let me know if I should pick up, or pass on it. So here's me: I am a Papyrus junkie. I buy all Papyrus titles as soon as they hit the shelves. I love Nascar3 and Nascar Legends. But as much as I love them, I love Grand Prix Legends even better. I am not a hot lapper with GPL, but I can keep the car on the track (My best time is a 1:30.10 at monza, and I'm high 1:30's at Spa, and 1:12's at WG) I love GP500, but have not spent a ton of time behind it. I also like SGCT a lot. Toca2, is a nice change for a while. I usaully get tired of it afte a week. Rally Championship is fun for a while, but I get tired easily of the touchy steering. I play Viper Racing now and then, but never really took it seriously (but it's still fun) I can't stand any of the Need For Speed games. I didn't like Cart Precision Racing. So with that said, are there people out there that are like me and bought and liked F1 2000? Or should I just hang on until GP3? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Dean

Comes down to how much $30 means to you, do you really expect GP3 to come out any time soon enough to satisfy you (I have doubts for me), and how much you are looking for an F1 fix right now. Actually, that comes across with too many if's. I think, barring framerate and some AI issues, F12K is very enjoyable and will keep me from firing up SCGT, GP2, MGPRS2. As a point of reference, my favorites were the original World Circuit F1GP, ICR, ICR2, through GP2. Occasionally the last version of N2 (was that 1999?) and some N3 (not really a NASCAR fan). I played GPL enough to get to know the 'ring (had to for my real drive there!) and to do a sub 1:30 at Monza. Even managed to win a race against a full AI field at, um, novice level. Also SCGT quite a bit, and both F1RS and MGPRS2. I didn't bother with any of the NFS series until Porsche Unleashed, which is quite decent BTW. Test drive isn't even worth mentioning. Gran Turismo and GT2 for the PSX are excellent. F12K might not have the staying power of ICR2, GP2, GLP, but it is a keeper.

My tastes in sims are pretty similar to yours, although I may not be quite as enthusiastic about N3 and N Legends as you are (I like them, though). I really like F1 2000. I think it's the best modern-era F1 sim available. I've written up some thoughts on and suggestions for F1 2000 and posted them on my general Sim Racing Web site (which is currently undergoing renovation). Go to: http://eaglewoman.maximumspeed.com/sims/ Click on Sims (on the left), then F1, and look for F1 200 under "Recommended". Why you shouldn't buy it: Bad AI out of the box. No telemetry. Bad replay system. Difficult to manage setup files. Bad default setups. No multiplayer practice. Hard to configure on some systems. Bad Force Feedback. Sound is to digital. (Although some people seem to like it) Why you should buy it: All the tracks of the 2000 season. The car handles like you would expect of a F1 car. A lot of things are adjustable, so you can expect better cars (there are already!), better AI (people already did!), graphics/sounds enhancements(yup, done!), and there is many more to expect. Stable online multiplay. (And I suspect a certain lady will improve things, no, I will not mention any names <g>) It's the best modern F1 game. Better setups will come available. _My_ conclusion, if you're like me who is surfing the web to find sim addons, and who isn't afraid to modify stuff, and to try new things out, then F1-2000 is for you. However, if you expect a polished game right out of the box, forget F1-2000. I have to be honest, I'm none too impressed with F1 2000. The reasons have been stated in many other threads, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite as bad as it is. EA, for all their faults (and lord knows they've got a few) usually make decent eye-candy, arcade games, but this, while certainly keeping the arcade feel, has those (imho) horribly dated SCGT-style graphics. Add to that, the fact that I can run against 6 AI, tops, and I'm left with a hotlap game, and I'm no hotlapper. Sorry, but I file this one in the "never-to-be-played" bin. Hi David. I was just referring to the way he was convinced that the only reason people were enjoying F1 2000 was because of some psychological need to justify the spending of their money. Similar to your stance that GPL fans have invested so much time in the sim that they must justify this by over-stating the quality of the physics engine, etc. I agree with neither of these views, by the way. Not for the first time you have misrepresented what I said. I don't have the arrogance to assume that anyone who disagrees with me is wrong - far from it. My point was that a lot of the negative posts that been seen on this NG are based on total ignorance of the sim and how it works in practice. I was not suggesting that the people who make these statement themselves are ignorant. I hope that (again) my explanation of the use of the English language has been useful to you! I also plan to continue to use my 12MB Voodoo2 when I get my P3-600E going. That way we will get a direct result with FRAPS of what a difference (if at all) a faster CPU will make. Huh, that is weird. As I have said earlier, my P2-450 with 12MB Voodoo 2 is giving 20fps in test and 15fps during races. This is at 800x600 with 22 opponants and the mirrors ON. I also just bought the parts to upgrade my CPU to a P3-600E. The framerate *HAS* to be better than with the P2-450 IMHO. So I don't know. I also don't get what your problem is with the graphics. Here we go again! As usual you are taking words out of context and have distorted their meaning for your own perverted purpose! You have missed out the important words in my post, i.e. 'total ignorance OF THE SIM'. It would appear that you need things to be explained to you more than once, so I'll try ONCE more. The comments in a lot of the negative posts are based on ignorance of the software in practice. Never did I suggest that the individuals doing the posting were themselves ignorant. If you don't understand the difference, then you are either a very young person, or you should go back to school. Happy racing! Iain Joe62 <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Greg, It's strange isn't it how one or two people seem to have that opinion of the graphics. I think they are superb. Maybe there are too many tweaking options. I get 20-25 fps @1024x768 with 22 cars and mirrors on on my Athlon 750 with V3! I'm coming to the conclusion that there is something about graphics cards and the performance of F12K. And yet, when one makes vague assertions about ignorant posts, without giving any specifics, it can only be interpreted as a lowbrow insult. "Iain Mackenzie" <[email hidden]> wrote: >Aha! I didn't see that much of an improvement when I upgraded from a 500 Athlon to a 750. It was very disappointing! Iain Greg Cisko <no.spam.email.for.me> wrote in message news:8dbcat$j8a$[email hidden]...

End of debate as far as I'm concerned - you are a very strange individual in my opinion. I hope you find someone who suits your intellect and level of reasoning to argue with soon. Iain Joe62 <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

This game is very poor and disappointing. I can't see how people in here say that the physics are good. No F1 car behaves or drives like this game makes it out to be. Have you used the external view? Car looks like it is floating on the road from side to side. Unbelievable. Joe62 wrote:

Well, I don't race in external view, too unrealistic for me. Physics seem pretty good, not to say they can't be better, but I am enjoying it. As for how no F1 car behaves or drivers like they do in this game, I really can't comment as I have never driven a formula 1 car. -- Don Burnette Dburn in N3 and Legends "Mrv" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > This game is very poor and disappointing.
