u don't have a 3dfx card
so why would u choose 3dfx?
u need to download the open GL patch from www.papy.com

but frankly it's far from perfect. If you can afford it, get a 3dfx
card - even a Voodoo1 will look far better than software, which is what
you're getting now.

Any help appreciated!

My experience with applying the patch to the demo is that it renders
the demo almost unplayable. This is a problem related to the protocol
used to produce the reflections in the mirrors. Maybe someone else
here could offer a fuller explanation.

Get the game, you won't regret it. The problem may be in finding it,
but when you do it will probably be cheap. Your Viper card will work
very well with gpl with a patch and a tweak.

Just got my copy of GPL and am not even going to bother attempting to
make it work with OpenGL drivers. Simpler just to drop in an old
Rendition card (or a newer Voodoo) when it comes time to spend time
sailing into the ditch. :)

I tried the demo on my 600Mhz Athlon + GeForce DDR and it ran at maybe
1-2fps with lots of the details turned off. That is when it didn't lock up.
It looked and played like one of the worst driving games I've ever seen in
my entire life. I hope the real version, once the DirectX patch is applied,
is worlds different.
Perhaps this demo was one reason that the game sold so poorly.

problem since the demo requires a mouse for its setup. I was able to
play the first install of the demo in software mode -- which is really
ugly -- and now I cannot even get the demo to load. And the OpenGL
dll will not let me delete it! Amazing!
The real issue here is that the guys at Papyrus bet on the wrong horse
when it came to graphic acceleration. And keeping their sim alive
requires, for some of us, a separate video card and set of drivers. I
already have two video cards. GPL makes it three. And GPL is the
only thing I have that absolutely requires Voodoo. Just getting to
the point of getting this thing on its feet is arduous. I can't wait
to spend months learning how to crawl around all the tracks.

I mean, OpenGL patch.
At $15, it's not exactly the hugest gamble though.

If you already have a Voodoo card great, but,
you do NOT NEED a Voodoo card. GPL runs great on TNTs.

Trust me, whatever you have to do is worth it, and it's really not
that hard. Get the game and upgrade to version 1.2 with a free patch,
it's rock solid.

Your right there, but at the time when most other pieces of software would
be loosing your interest, you'll be getting so deep into gpl it will be
ruining your life. Sounds great eh ? Honestly, I've got more entertainment
for my money with gpl than I've had from the last 10 purchases.

Let's be specific here. "Runs great on TNTs." The demo didn't run so
great and I have a AGP Graphics Blaster 16MB. (The demo looked great
-- once -- but everything else, including the mouse, was either
hopelessly slow or outright frozen.) I tried uninstalling the demo
while leaving the OpenGL patch in place and then reinstalling the demo
and it was completely pants. I had to go back to a DOS boot partition
just to clear things out.
Rehan Ali of Games Domain, while quite impressed with GPL, pointed out
that the OpenGL patch alone does not get around the mirror problem.
(10fps cockpit, 30fps replay) I have an ancient Intergraph Reactor
with a Verite 1000 chip that has never been out of the box. Might
that be a better choice than either the patch or a newer Voodoo card?

it will handle gpl all that well.
There are some added tweeks you can do to get your TNT runner better
for GPL, but the real best solution is one of the V3 3dfx Voodoo cards.
If you can find one at an auction or other discount, you'll probably pay
less than 100 dollars (us)
Keep in mind the newest 3dfx card, the V5 5500, is due out by mid May
and many many current 3dfx users will be flooding EBAY and other web
sellers with offers to buy thier used vid card.

Car II demo. (I assume if GPL runs well on a system that can run Indy
Car II, I'm home free, right? Maybe?) As for which generation it is,
it's the V1000 chip and not the V2100 or V2200.

I got this in the demo. I now get it with the full game (1.2).
My 'fix' is to wait for the game to load, press CTRL-ALT-DEL *once*, and
then click 'Cancel' (in the 'Close program' box). After that, your mouse
will work. I don't know why!!!
Oh, and the OpenGL patch is just pants. I have a 400MHz K6/2 system with a
TNT2Ultra, and the game still slows down with the graphics options setup
minimally. On my cousin's 350MHz K6/2, it runs fine with *full* detail...
on his Voodoo *1* card!!! :-/
Now, if Papy would like to hand a copy of the sources to a small group of
(NDA-signing) techies, perhaps this could be rsolved...

Wait - what's his frame rate? Maybe I'm perceiving differently, but I can NOT
run GPL with all the graphics options on smoothly. I have a K6/2-350 with a V3
3000, and 128MB ram...
Someone else(sorry, forgot who) suggested this as a benchmark:
Turn on all graphics, detail all the way to the right. Goto Silverstone.
Start a race from the back of the grid with 19 AI. When the flag drops, don't
move. Give us these three numbers:1) frame rate as you wait for the start. 2)
lowest frame rate as the flag drops. 3) framerate right before you get booted
for not moving. Then maybe, do the same test at Monaco. Just give the lowest
whole number for framerate. 6.25 would be 6, etc.

1) 9 2) 8 3)11. I'm at work now, and don't remember the exact figures.
So it sounds like you'd see a decent improvement with a V3, since my processor

I can't afford that right now, so I'll have to settle for the celeron500 or

Oh, I forgot to add that the 'detail bias' is set to '1/4' from left.
That is odd. Perhaps you are thinking of full 19-AI-car-races, and I'm
thinking of training...? I have to say that I didn't play GPL for long on
his system - only time for a quick go!
Sorry, but I can't do that right now. I don't know whan I'll be able to
either. :-(
Out of interest, though, here are the figures for my system (K6/2 400,
128 MB, TNT2Ultra, SB Live!):
In core.ini, TossHighestMip=1, MipFiltering=3, MirrorsEvery=4
Res is 640x480.
Silverstone: 1) 4 2) 3 3) 5
Monaco : 1) 2 2) 4 3) 3
If I drive around *way* behine the AI cars, I cen get beteeen 15-26fps at
Silverstone, and 10-22fps at Monaco.
Seems pretty bad to me. If I upgraded my CPU to an Athlon 700, would I be
able to use a reasonable amount of detail and still get 36fps?
