it seems to automatically reduce my master volume to 50% then the wav volume
down as well - the result being I can't hear anything...
patched to v1.06 to no avail..

This fixed it for me. I had the same prob. and it annoyed me no end. All
sorted now.
open the snd_cpa.ini in the ...\mgprs2\cpa\dll directory
then change
[DLL_Sxd]
Unconditionnal=None
File0=WAVd3
Test0=_SND_fn_bIsDirect3DOptimum@0
Default=WAVX2
into
[DLL_Sxd]
Unconditionnal=None
File0=WAVd3
Test0=_SND_fn_bIsDirect3DOptimum@0
