Hi fellow GPLer's, I am currently using a V770 TNT2 ultra. I am thinking of
getting a Voodoo 2 or 3 strictly for GPL. I know that GPL was designed for
the Voodoo card. My question is, would it improve my frame rates and
graphics? How much? I get 36 fps if I am by myself and there's not a lot of
scenery or other cars. I probably average about 32 to 34. I have my mirrors
set to cars only, detail slider half way, 1158xwhatever it is, resolution.
TIA.
I doubt that adding a Voodoo card will help your frame rates. They're about
maxxed out now. If you're not having any stability problems there's no need
to spend the extra money.

I believe it was Henry David Thoreau who said, "Beware of all driving
sims that require new video cards" or something to that effect.
Or, in the case of GPL, video cards that attempted to establish a
standard and failed.
Henry notwithstanding, speaking from the perspective of a casual gamer
with no great patience when it comes to fussing with video drivers, I
am tempted to agree with your inclination to buy the card the game was
designed to run on. Anything else is just that: anything else --
something which depends upon a fiddled driver to function.
With each passing day, GPL gets farther and farther away from the
world in which it was designed to run. Best snag a Voodoo card now in
hopes of seeing something close to what it was the guys at Papyrus saw
when they were writing the original code.
I have -- this sounds like a wine snob -- a Reactor which has never
been used (still in the original wrapper) which might be perfect for
this particular sim. I'll let you know if it's ambrosia or vinegar.

1. Get a Voodoo3 if you are going to get one. Even 2 Voodoo 2 cards in
SLI mode is not as fast as a single Voodoo3.
2. The TNT2 Ultra is capable of 32 bit color (although I don't know if
GPL supports it or if you are using it) whereas the Voodoo3 is only
capable of 16 bit.
3. I would guess that any increase in framerates would be minimal, but
the key word here is GUESS. I may be totally off base.

As the framerate in GPL is limited to 36 fps you will not have an advantage
if you buy a Voodoo...

As for being a fellow GPLer and a V770 TNT2 non-ultra Voodoo2 user . .
. I will try to explain why I use a Voodoo2 on my system. With the
TNT2 I was able to get 36, but only at 800*600 with lots of stuff off
and the 36 would drop to 32 at times. I installed a new 3dfx 1000 and
started up GPL expecting to be able to run 1024*768, but I am running
at 960*something, with basicly the same stuff off. I get a constant 36
and it never changes from that almost every where. I also notice that
the Voodoo2 image qulitiy (IMO) is not as nice as the OpenGL, but the
feel of speed is much better, when I am zooming down any track with
the Voodoo2, I feel like I am there! For now the Voodoo2 is going to
stay. I really wish I could figure out why Online GPL, WinVROC and
ZoneAlarm, do not like each other, but that is another thread.
BTW: My CPU is a 500P3 and I have 128MB RAM
