My son who's just turned 4 occasionally likes to play "racing cars" on
the computer - either "racing cars" GPL or "racing cars with roofs on"
(i.e. N3 demo). As for PB ... well, getting all the way around the track
would be an achievement when its so much more exciting to drive into
walls etc or decide to backtrack a bit because it looks more interesting
that way :-)
Anyway current big excitement is that he got a toy Nascar car for his
birthday (Jeff Gordon 24 to be precise) and he can see "my car" on the
computer. Slightly concerned with his keen-ness on Nascar (and worse
Nascar Trucks :-) but at least he was able to recognise a Ferrari on TV
coverage of F1 GPs at the age of 2 so perhaps there's still hope :-)
As for 10-year olds doing 1:29 at Monza .... aaaargh! I think it will
take me another 10 years to get to that point :-)

A 10-year-old racing GPL on VROC
Tony Rickard revealed that his 10-year-old son had run a 1:29.8 at Monza and was racing on VROC, and asked how a child would fit into adult online racing. Others were amazed, suggested karting, and advised caution with the chat function.
Automated summary.
I finally caved in and let my 10 year old son loose on VROC.
Mikey (M. Rickard) set a PB of 1:29.82 in a Ferrari at Monza on-line this
evening - good enough for a front row grid position :)
Unfortunately his racing etiquette needs needs developing - just silly
errors rather than blatant over aggression.
So I wondered if there were other GPL kids out there, alternatively a server
devoted to novices. I don't want to dampen his enthusiasm but equally don't
want to upset any VROC die hards he might tangle up with.
Anyone else in a similar position?
Cheers

am a little proud :-). More to try to figure how a young lad would fit in to
the "adult" world of semi serious sim racing compared to arcade gaming.
Inevitably his race maturity is lacking. My concern is that he might get
tangled up and ruin someone else's race - for which I have to have a high
degree of responsibility by allowing him to join. The second concern is that
VROC is assumed to be an adult arena, do we really want kids joining in?
Hence the question of whether there are other youngsters around who could
join specific races.
I have been surprised at Mikey's performance in GPL - I didn't expect a kid
to be able to master GPL to that level, what has surprised me is his
persistence in going through the pain of the learning curve, something kids
tend not to do. If he could put as much effort into school...
Of course it leaves me a shade disappointed. GPL is the only computer game
left I can beat him. Gran Tourismo I can accept (can't master a joypad to
drive a car). Unreal Tournament (too slow on the fire button). Fifa99
(controls again - haven't played since losing 9-0). TOCA2 (must be arcade if
he can beat me!). But GPL is an adult game - my years of driving experience
and knowledge of motor racing will always beat a young kid who lacks such
experience. Or so I thought....
Mind you it wouldn't be the first time I was beaten at GPL by a driver yet
to pass his test. Perhaps Mikey is my long term revenge for a certain
G.Nash!
Anyway - if Eldred has sufficient demand for the "kiddie" server I wonder
how many adults here will lie about their age - just to make sure they can
beat them!
Cheers

This would be my concern as a parent Tony. If the kid has racing ability,
which by all acounts he is, I'm sure he would aquit himself at least as well
as the many idiots whose manners leave a lot to be desired.
However, If it was my boy racing, I'd be inclined to ensure that the chat
function is not running when he is looking for races. We all know that VROC
indulges in some colourful topics and choice of vocabulary all to often
these days.
Regards
MS
BTW. Yes I am guilty of the aforementioned indulgences from time to time.
However, as you say, It's generally regarded as an adult domain.

Muhahahahaha :-)
Well I guess now that I *have* passed I'm a prime target for a 10-year-
old around Monza.. Although I did recently run my first 1m27 in the
Ferrari :-)

Sure - we could arrange a convenient time on VROC and drop in on a dedicated
server
E-mail me or post to the group if you think others may be interested.

He has had a couple of runs on indoor circuits - did ok, but no racing was
allowed for his age group.
I do need to sort something more serious out for him
> how does he do on the other tracks?
Watkins Glen 1:07s. That & Monza are all he has really spent any time on.
> oh yea... and what YOUR PB at monza :)
Hmmm :) mid 1:28s in Lotus but only low 1:29s in Ferrari :(
Guess it is time to practice!

Whoah,
You know, it has never occured to me that we have somebody that young
joining us on VROC! I must beg to be excused, as I was taken out by Mikey
last night. I now understand why he didn't reply on me informing him that I
thought "railriding is for weenies".
Hmm, maybe, just maybe I'm happy I'm not one of the seriously big mouthed
ones out there <g>.
Oh, and you may want to explain the expression "pants" to him, I believe
that was the strongest word I used in my rage for being punted out by
somebody I had lapped :-)
How about sticking a "10" after his nickname at VROC? I think we'll all get
along quite nicely then.
Best,
Matt
Kinda related
A friend of mine has a 4yr old, who races N3 (offline of course) hehe he
has a problem with concentrating for more than 1-2 laps, but he can get
around dega with no contact quite well +)
I gonna keep bugging them to start putting money away for a Kart for
when he's big enuff to reach the pedals lol.

The railriding was by accident (simply running wide) - he knows not to do
that

You'd be surprised! He'll probably explain it to me :)

>I took the anonymous approach to start with to keep a low profile - now he
seems reasonably adept this seems a good idea. So look out for Mikey10.
Incidentally - if anyone strongly objects to him racing then feel free -
just politely ask him to leave, he understands. Similarly if he does
something daft like wander in to you, or block you then let him know so he
can benefit from your experience.

Graeme, did you adjust your driving style to pass your test - or was the
prospect of a retest too much for the examiner to consider...

If only everyone else on VROC behaved the same way it would be a much nicer
place ;)
As far as his racing goes I can't comment having never seen him race, but by
your description he seems to at least want to have a proper race, which is
better than many of the so called mature racers who join VROC and drive
backwards around the tracks <G>
I say let him join races and see how he goes, if it looks a bit too
competitive for his skill level then maybe he could just watch, he may even
learn a bit about what is required in online racing.
Anyway, there are older *kids already on VROC so I say let him have a go, if
you're concerned about the colourful language you can turn the incar and
VROC chat off :)
